Underwater/Waterproof Camera Reviews

I have the Olympus and the Kodak too. I'm on my second Olympus as my older model flooded. The newer ones have the second locking feature which so far is working well. I prefer the Olympus over the Kodak, maybe because it's more familiar to me. I think the quality on the Olympus is better too.

I am a former scuba instructor and if I ever get back into it, I will pick up the Ikelite housing for my dslr. I used to use a Nikonis. For a recent trip to the Galapagos, I knew the Olympus wasn't going to cut it snorkeling. It was just too big of a trip to risk it, so I picked up the Canon underwater housing for my G11. A few people had the Olympus, but the marine life was just too fast to capture unless they could anticipate the animals' movements. Those of us with the G11 and housing were very pleased!

However, the nice thing about the Olympus is its size. I take it to the beach, pool, boating and waterparks. The G11 and housing would be a pain to lug around all day, plus I'd worry about banging it. It's funny, people will stop and stare, then approach me with a horrified look. "Is that camera waterproof? Will you take a picture of me?"

You say you'd worry about banging the G11 and its housing. Is the housing fragile? I was under the impression that they were pretty tough. Or is that a misimpression?

Just read through your reviews and am considering a purchase for our upcoming trip to Disney/cruise. I want to take one camera so I would like a good 'all around camera that is waterproof'. One of the issues I never think to check is the lag time between shots. Any insight regarding this between the Panasonic and the Pentax? Any help would be appreciated.

They're fairly durable, but when you're in a remote spot on an expensive vacation I'd hate to lose my underwater shooting capabilities! Not sure how much shock protection it provides. All it takes is one little drop of salt water to fry the electronics (as happened to my video camera in a housing while shooting Great Whites in Australia-my video camera was fried for the rest of my month long trip)!

Sorry, I don't really have any insight. Honestly, I remember when testing them how SLOW they all seemed. I guess I've been spoiled by DSLRs with high burst rates. Now that I've fiddled with the settings and enabled burst in the Oly, it's not too bad.

Maybe someone else can offer some insight.

Because of the price I bought the Kodak Easyshare Sport C123 a few weeks ago to use for fun in our pool. Overall I really like it. Images are pretty good and the video is loads of fun. Shutter lag sucks though. I was trying to get some shots of my boys jumping off the diving board and had no success at all. Getting video of them jumping off the diving board and into the water was very successful.

If I can get a few shots and video's uploaded I'll post them.

Yes-it's very frustrating with how slow they are compared to a dslr. Even the G11 seems slows! I've learned to anticipate my kids' actions, and set the burst mode on to increase the odds of getting the shot. My kids' get frustrated when I tell them to "do it again" several times!
