A friend of mine decided recently to plan a disney trip with her family which is ever changing since she is foster parent. Her prob is that her foster son is not even two yet and is huge. He could easily pass for 3 because of his height. My 3.5 yo foster son is much smaller, lol, she actually has given me hand me downs from this kid, he wears size 5t. She doesnt have access to his birth certificate so she cant take that with her. Will she have probs since he doesnt look his age?

She shouldn't have any problems. Does he know how to say his age? At most, the CM's might ask him how old he is, but honestly I think they are usually just making friendly conversation. Whether he says his age yet or not, all she has to do is say that he's still two. She should be able to say it with confidence since she knows she's not lying! Normally, I'd say just bring a copy of the BC but since she doesn't have one she can't do that... maybe there's some "official" paperwork from the state with his name and age on it that she could bring a copy of instead? Possibly a note from his doctor? I seriously doubt she'd ever have to "prove" it, but it might give her some peace of mind.

Oh, btw, my ds is tall for his age and we've been to DL and WDW a total of 9x with him. Only once did anyone ever question his age (on his last trip to DL at 35.5mos). We asserted he was two and that was the end of the story.

Hth!

I would think she would have something from the Foster system with his age on it, an ID card, or even an immunization record. I do believe they would take her word on it but I'm sure she could find something with an age on it, wouldn't she need something like that to travel with a Foster child? I don't know but I would think you would need to have something giving permission to take him out of state.

I agree. As a foster parent, she should have something with his age on it. And really, an immunization record might be a great idea -- it usually even has his height/weight measurements filled in by the ped's nurse. If anyone questioned, it'd be a piece of cake to open it to the most recent checkup, which would have the nurse's record of shots given, ht, and weight...and it'd be OBVIOUS the kid is just way up there on the growth chart.

Oh, my kids were questioned, not us. My dd was 2 1/2, and in 12-18 month clothes. Happened again during the trip on which she turned 3. Definitely made me feel more confident and less defensive, because I wasn't worried with good proof in my hand.

She will have to have a document from the court to take him out of the state and that will have a birthday on it. If she doesn't have the document from the court and the court or a birth relative finds out she can be charged with kidnapping and taking a child across state lines.

As for talking, he doesnt talk much and what few words he does know are spanish. I know she will have to get a court order just to take him on vacation and I would imagine that it contains his bday. I will suggest she ask her childs case worker if this would be fine to share with Disney Cast Members. If so great, if not, she can request something from her worker or us a shot record, either should have the info without breaking confidentiality laws.
Thanks so much for the suggestions!

I don't know if this will make you feel better, but we have never been questioned about the ages of our children. Our oldest son is very tall and mature for his age and we have never had any problems, ditto when we went just before DS#3 turned 3. I'm really surprised that people have actually had cast members who question the age you give them.

I hope they have a great trip, what a nice opportunity for that little boy! :)

As a parent whose family has been questioned, I must say that it was done very tactfully. All but one time, my kids were questioned, not me directly. But I had my dd's birth certificate out, in my hand early into the conversation. One CM from Disneyland Hong Kong (so her name tag said) was a little more suspicious-sounding, but my ds5 (at the time) was chirping on happily, and replied that his baby sister was turning 3 that very day. (We were 4 days into our vacation, so she was considered UNDER 3 the whole trip). Oh, and we got the same treatment at several buffets.

Wow, I can't believe that!! I would be totally shocked if they expected me to produce a birth certificate to prove the age of one of my children. The thought of a cast member actually expecting a child under 3 to know their age, birth date, etc is just ridiculous to me. :confused3

I totally agree! If a cast member asked my 2 year old DD how old she is my DD would look like this --->
I am taking her birth certificate with us on this trip just in case we do get asked.

So, is it recommended that you take proof of age? We are taking our daughter (first timer!!) in May and she is a very precocious 28 month old. I am afraid she will say "I'm three" (as she does now!!) if her age is questioned.

Thanks for feedback
me (29) :figment:
