Unclaimed Money

Last night Dateline did a feature about the unclaimed money that's sitting in state accounts.

I did a search, and found 3 accounts for my FIL, and one for my grandma who died over 20 years ago. (My uncle will be looking into it.)

If you're curious, look up www.unclaimed.org and it will lead you to the different state search sites.

If you can just enter your last name, try that first. That's how I found my grandma's. It was under "Lizzie" instead of "Elizabeth." No one ever called her Lizzie. I never would have found it if I had looked under her full name.

I'm wondering if they'll give me a finder's fee???

Thats very interesting. I found my dh's brothers name but theres no hometown listed. Not sure if its his or not but we shall find out.

I found my DH's name....the only other one that we know of is his father who has been deceased for some time. DH has a strange last name so its possible that it belonged to his father. We are also going to find out.

Well, my FIL, who does not have a computer and who moved out of state years ago, is griping about having to make a toll call tomorrow.

My uncle had been contacted awhile back by a company that requested $20.00 to process this claim for him. He did send them the money and receive the forms, but he never followed up on them. (There is no fee when you go directly through the state.)

I'm dying to find out how much they're getting. I'll be sure to give my FIL a bop in the head if it turns out that he gets a decent windfall.
