Finally after 2 months I got my new scooter today. Wheelsie it is sahweeettt!!!

Well anyway it is one heavy sucker. There is absolutely no way my wife can lift it in our Ford Explorer. So, off to Columbus I go to try and find something so it will be more easy to load. For a lift that fits on the back of the Explorer they wanted $1900.00, And the guy I was talking to about it got all muffed because I told him that was to much $$$$$$.

Well I settled for 2 aluminum ramps at a cost of $400.00 (they don't work that great).

It is such a pain in the *&#, I really think that these mobility places see us comming and know we need the device and just charge way to much.

Of course the insurance company will not pay for a lift because they consider it a luxury. A LUXURY!!!!!!!!! What the heck am I supposed to do ride the scooter 50 miles one way to work and then back. I mean if you have a scooter or wheelchair you need a way to trasport it.

Sorry for the vent (it seems I have done a lot of it lately)but it just rakes my last nerve. I think we are being taken advantage of because we have disabilities or our loved ones have a disability.

Then to top it off if an able bodied person sees you struggling with something they just walk right on by, and ignore the situation. I can tell you this much if I seen a lady struggling with a 200 pound scooter and I could I would at least offer some assistance.

Well, I have griped enough, guess I will go take a ride on the cadillac:D

Glad to hear you got it.
We had the same problem when DD got her power wheelchair. She's a little bitty thing about 80 pounds and her wheelchair weighs around 250 pounds without her on it. Once you get the mobility device, the vehicle people know you need some modifications.
Hope you find something less expensive that will work

Awww Buddy Im so thrilled to hear you got it!!! :)

I know it sounds silly but why dont you put what in your looking into EBAY search? I just did " van lift" and came up w/ oodles of stuff! :) just a thought :) *huggles*

Again congrats!! :)

Glad you got your scooter. I had to deal with the portable ramp for over a year. It was 30" wide and folded in half. It was heavy for my daughters to lug in and out of the van.I finally got a grant for vehicle modification from Massachusetts Rehab Commission. I had to purchase the van but they put the modifications out to bid. My van has electronic handcontrols, Zero effort steering, 6 way seat, foldout ramp, chair lock down and the "kneel down" feature. Do you have anything like a rehab commission that might assist you?
Anyway, congrats on your new wheels, enjoy.

Hey Tony!! Hey bud, I see that little prayer to the Saint of Mobility... helped to get your scooter in time for you vacation!!
HURRAY...

If the doc writes an Rx for the scooter, and the LIFT... should not the insurance company have to pay for the equipment????
I realize they will balk big time but if they realize that the lift is a one time purchase.. (my lift has a warranty to last my lifetime) Yes you may have to pay someone to install it in new vehicles every time you switch vehicles but that is not too costly.
I don't know if a lift that goes on the outside of the vehicle would be appropriate for Ohio weather but it would be easy for you to use.
The insurance company has to know that you can not be independent without the scooter, so to increase your indepence they should provide the lift also. It is considered a package deal.
The new scooter is bigger and heavier than the last scooter correct? That would be the cause for them to purchase a lift, as neither you nor your caregiver (Becky) can put the scooter in the car. I know that is not how you view your lovely wife but that is how the insurance company views her. Tell them you can not go to Doctors appointments without the scooter. THerefore you need the lift. It is important for them to know that you would be homebound without the scooter or the lift.

Check with vocational rehab and see if they can help you. Yes lifts are expensive but the ramps can be dangerous. Thank God I have my lift because I am totally wheelchair dependent right now but was able to enjoy Disney this weekend because my wheelchair travelled with me.
