Is it OK to carry umbrellas in the parks? Looking at Sunday's forecast, thinking of bringing a travel one.

Thanks

Yes. They even bring out a rolling cart full of umbrellas and ponchos when there is a chance of rain.

Umbrellas are fine. They don't do much to keep your legs dry, but keep you from having to put wet ponchos on and off all the time.

Umbrellas aren't really a good idea in crowds. The ends wind up at eye level of others and if you're at a show, you could block the view of others.

I've used umbrellas (being careful and low crowd times) with no problem. I do agree with the PP that you have to be super careful if it is windy / gusty (which can be) and if it is bucketing rain they provide little protection.

I, too, have used an umbrella. I'm pretty height challenged so there isn't usually a problem of run off onto other people. I tend to use a raincoat or poncho for the drizzel or light rain and if it pouring I use the umbrella. I wear sundresses most of the time so getting my legs wet isn't a problem and a few napkins or towels from the restroom take care of the problem.

I think ponchos work better in the parks then an umbrella . If the rain gets bad we try to duck into somewhere sheltered.

Don't believe the weather forecast. They are clueless. And if it does actually rain it usually doesn't last too long and it is too easy to find shelter. Umbrellas are a disaster in a crowd.

Also, the run off goes onto people around you.

And, you've never been soaked by inconsiderate poncho users that brush by close to you and sit by you on buses, etc?? Otherwise, you were dry because you didn't stay out in the rain??

I'll take an umbrella any day - and yes, I 'am' conscious of others around me. We've used our umbrellas for years and never poked anyone's eyes out, and are aware of where our 'drips' go. We 'do not' stick around in the parks in heavy rains, so yes, our umbrellas serve us just fine.

And I have found that rainy days to not result in the shoulder to shoulder crowds where an umbrella becomes an issue. If it's raining enough to need an umbrella, the parades are likely cancelled.

We bring small compact umbrellas on rainy days - they clip onto our belts. No, we would never be so inconsiderate as to use them at a show, parade or during fireworks (all of which have likely been cancelled anyway). And we've never swung them into people, jabbed them into anyone's eyes or shed rain onto anyone with them. Quite the contrary - we've actually used them to block rain from blowing into the shelter we and several other families were huddling under, and we've shared them with other guests during downpours.

But, you know, considering the fights people get over selfie sticks, bubbles, and saving spots in line, I suppose there's inevitably going to be someone who thinks umbrellas are tools of the devil and ought to be banned. ;)

(Cue the story of how an inconsiderate umbrella wielder severely injured another guest.)

Yup, we used travel umbrellas and our own rain coats one time at HS and it was much better than our poncho days. We carried one plastic bag so when we went inside an attraction we closed the umbrellas and put in the plastic bag to catch the drips. I like that the umbrella keeps the rain off my head and face, was in pouring rain at MK in a poncho and felt like a drowned rat. If it is super windy nothing works well but for regular rain I'm going with the umbrella from now on. That said I do carry the $1 disposable poncho as well. :umbrella:

OT: After making good use of an umbrella also on sunny days to help avoid sunburn (a non-Disney trip) I am now questioning whether an umbrella and/or a burka should be a suggested alternative to a Guest Assistance Card (DAS) when someone with a sun related health issue asks for an alternative to waiting in a slowly moving line going through an unshaded area.

The umbrella I was using did not have that great an SPF; I could see the sun through it. But it was the best thing I had at the time.

I don't mind them, and like PPs have mentioned, if it's rainy enough to need an umbrella then crowds are likely pretty low and the parades are cancelled anyway. More often than not, though, I wind up using my umbrella as a parasol to protect me from the sun rather than to protect me from the rain.

Yes, umbrellas are allowed at Disney World. However, you might be asked to lower them during any outdoor show that is available during the rain where people have to sit down in a theatre type situation.

Umbrellas are not allowed at NASCAR events and that's the only place I can recall a "ban" on them.

The umbrella versus poncho debate has lived a long and fruitful life on these boards and some of the comments above lead me to believe the life will continue far into the future.
