We are going to disney in June for 10 days. We have our 2 boys ages 4 and 5. We have not used a stroller for 2 years now and do not even have a stroller.
We were thinking of renting a double stroller when we get there but another part of me is thinking of just buying two umbrellas to use for the trip and then leaving them behind.
Remember my boys are 4 and 5 and my oldest it bigger taller and heavier than other kids his age.

Does anyone know of a good sturdy umbrella that will hold a big 5 year old?

10 days at Disney is quite different than 'real' life and I think you will need a stroller for sure.

You can either rent the double stroller and/or play it by ear and she how it goes or you can buy 2 umbrella strollers. You can buy cheapo ones from Walmart or Target but they won't be the most comfortable for a 5 year old. I'd go try some out in the store. I'd decide whether to buy based on the cost difference of buying and renting for 10 days.

I bought a nice (single) Maclaren stroller in 2004 as they are GREAT for older kids. My DD used it for 4 Disney trips and I just sold it for $50 on Craigslist. I paid $139 with free shipping at www.albeebaby.com. It was a great deal.

It was the Maclaren Quest. I definitely got my money's worth. It was a GREAT stroller especially for an older child.

Good luck!

I bought an umbrella stroller just to take to Disney last year for our DS 4 at the time and I plan on bringing it back in May and hes now 5. Its not soo big that it is hard to take around and it gives him the break he needs once in a while! Good luck and have a great trip! Nettii:goodvibes

We just got back from a WDW trip on 2/10 and travelled with a 3, 5, and 7 year old. I bought a cheap umbrella stroller before we left from Target, and even my 7 year old rode in it and was just fine. Renting at WDW is SO pricey - you could buy both strollers for what renting would cost for about 1 day. I purchased the cheapest Costco model at Target and would totally recommend it. Have a great time!!

Just wanted to add that my 5 yr old walked the whole time at Disney without any problems so If you take a stroller I would only take 1 and if your 5 yr old really needed it they could take turns. Mine never even thought about using a stroller and it was so freeing not to bother with one.

I would get one of these I have one and love it the wheels on this one are much better than other umbrella strollers and they come in several colors. I woud get one try it out with ds you might want to consider just bringing one and renting one if needed most of the time they like to walk. If you try it out and ds is okay just get two another option I would suggest is the jeep single or twin umbrella stroller(s).

We recently returned from 10 days at Disney and I bought (and left behind) two $10.99 strollers from WalMart for DD6 and DS4. We thought it was the best investment EVER! I imagine both kids COULD have walked the entire time, but the strollers allowed them to go much longer in MUCH better moods. We would push the kids from the bus stop to Fantasyland, park the strollers until we moved on to Adventureland, etc. We didn't bother with them at MGM.

I'm sure they weren't the most comfortable strollers in the world, but since we weren't using them for naps and the kids spent more time out than in, who cares? They were happy for the ride and I don't see how too small umbrella strollers could be any less comfortable than those molded plastic Disney rentals.

I bought one of those umbrella strollers for my ds3 (35lbs) and found the stroller really hard to push. You need to at least try how the stroller works with older child before you bring it with you. You may find it hard to push.

This stroller is about $100- you can probably find it cheaper online. My DS 5 is big for his age and we use Maclarens because the weight limit goes up to 55lbs. The Volo is an umbrella type stroller so it doesn't recline, but it does have a canopy. If you want ones that recline you can get the Triumph or Quest which are more $$. You will definitely need stroller; we always bring one. Even outside of parks they come in handy- waiting for transportation at the end of the day, DTD, etc.

First of all, I have to say that this is the first thread where WDW strollers do not out rule the umbrella strollers. I have bever rented one, but renters LOVE them. Secondly, I want make my vote. Go for cheapies! I say that because for $10-20 who have use of the stroller all week, where it will cost much more then that to rent.

We got a Maclaren Volo a few years ago for my 4yo DD;who is almost 6yo now and we still use it. It's great, light weight and came with a strap to carry it on your shoulder.I think it holds up to 45-50lbs.

First, let me say that I'm a HUGE stroller fan. The Macs that PPs have told you about are great, as are Inglesinas and Chiccos. All will do the job.

BUT, I don't know if you will really need one. Ten days is a nice long time period and you won't have to go commando. I doubt you would need a stroller for MGM or MK. In AK and Epcot, I would play it by ear. I wouldn't want to have to deal with a stroller all the time.

Perhaps you can rent a single for the days that you need it. Or just bring a good single umbrella style with you.

Another idea would be to pick up a slightly better stroller on clearance. For example, the Peg P3 and Inglesina Zippy can be found for around $150 on clearance. Both kids can ride on it. One sits and the other uses the step on the back to hitch a ride.

But like I said, I would probably pass.

oooo I love this thread, we go in april/may with dd4 and dd19mo I was only taking one stroller (dd19mo still sleeps 2 hours a day) but have been convinced by the dis uk that I will need another. I plan on buying this when I arrive. we are staying at vistana villages without a car and plan to cab it most places. I understand there is a publix nearby which I will need to visit on day 1 anyway. I've not been to a publix, will I be able to pick up a cheap stroller there?
if so, how much choice should I expect?
many thanks.
