umbrella stroller + big kid = bad idea?

OK, as of now I'm thinking that the best thing to do is to buy a Mclaren for ds5. We're going in May. It will be me, dh, ds5, ds2 (he'll turn 2 two days before we leave), and my dm. Dm doesn't like thrill rides nor does ds5 even if he's taller than the height limit (he's 50"). So dm stays with the kids while dh and I are on the rides. We do this everytime, but that was before ds2 was born. Now we have 2 strollers to push and she obviosly can't push them both by herself. What can we do? Do we take ds5 out of his stroller and leave it [the stroller] in the stroller parking of the ride we're in so dm can walk a little with both ds while they wait for us?

For those times I would just have your older DS walk.

You might want to check www.babye-store.com I bought a 2007 Volo there and had good luck with them and the price was great-$75. They do have Triumphs too ($125). The 2007 Volo's come with a rain cover (I'm pretty sure all Triumphs do). I chose the Volo for my DD(5) because it is 2 1/2 pounds lighter and I think the mesh seat will be nice & cool in WDW.

walmart has the evenflo x sport at $30 as a buget alternative. a lot better than a cheap umbrella. The posted weight limit is 40 lbs, but if you don't plan on using it long term I think you could get by with more my 38 lb 40 in DD4 doesn't seem to put any strain on it at all.

Do you think my 6 year old 45 lb/ 45 inches tall dd would be comfortable in the evenflo x sport? The weight limit is 40 lbs. but I saw that it holds between 40-50 lbs.

We do that - DD is 55-58 lbs, 46-48 inches tall, and 5.5. I have a $15 Walmart Stroller. I think the weight limit on it is 40 lbs.

No, it's not heavenly to push. Yes, it's occasionally stubborn about starting if the wheels are askew. Yes, I end up pushing it because DH is too tall to comfortably push.

Yes, DD still rides it in...when I let her. She'd love to ride in it all the time if I'd let her! Her legs are too long for the 'legrest'. Her head still doesn't touch the canopy, but a tall bow will. If she's tired enough, she's napped in it. (her head nods forward)

We've used it for 7 trips now (starting when she was 3.5), 25-30 days of use, and it keeps on strolling. DH wants to give it up. DD wants to take it everywhere. Me, I'm happy to give DD a respite from walking that doesn't involve a piggy-back ride! And my kid, when exhausted from too much excitement, walking and heat, is not a nice thing to behold. So I push her...happily.

Yeah, we have a cheapie umbrella stroller that we still use for DS, 6, who is 48 inches tall and 54 pounds.

It works fine for the limited times we use it....the zoo, WDW. Otherwise, he walks everywhere these days.

You could just do one stroller. Especially if you are taking a 2 year old and grandma, this will not be a mad sprinting trip and the leisurely pace is well within the capabilities of your average healthy child. Your big boy just might surprise you and life will probably be easier without that second stroller. There's a point at which they are just one more thing to haul around and from your post it sounds like you might be hitting that point.

Sorry if this has been addressed on another thread, but...

We're going in Jan. 2009 when my DD will be 4 (almost 5) and my DS will be 2. My DD is tall for her age and weighs about 50 lbs now; DS is around 30 pounds, I think. We brought a double jogging stroller last time (Feb. 2008) but it was so bulky to cart around. Plus, DD can do most of the walking herself.

Would it be less obnoxious to have two umbrella strollers, leaving one of them (for DD) parked or in a locker most of the day until she really needs it? It's difficult, b/c although she looks "bigger" she's still just 4 years old and isn't up to walking 5-7 miles every day.

I appreciate your help and reading about your experiences with older kids and strollers.

I used a Maclaren Volo for both our sons on our trip in November. The 3 year old road in it the most (he loved it), but my 5 year old had no problem riding in it as well. The volo is extremely light weight, easy to push and folds up easily with a carry strap. It also has a nice size basket on the bottom which we used a lot. If you have a Target near you they have them there for $100, but I bought mine with my 10% off coupon they send periodically to card holders and saved some money.

My youngest is 5 and about 50 lbs. I'm thinking she'll need a stroller for the evenings. So when we go back each day for our afternoon swim, I'll grab the stroller for the dinner/touring part of each day.

This will be the only time we'll need a stroller, But with all the money I'm spending on this trip, another $70 to make her comfortable probably won't kill us.

I really love my peg p3. it's really nice and roomy my 3 year old doesn't look odd and her head is way below the headrest. It also reclines, folds like and umbrella stroller and washes really nice. I paid $200 for it off of this site http://babydealz.stores.yahoo.net/hello.html.

I am going to post my two cents on the strollers I have used. I have both a Combi and Maclaren. While both are great strollers, light weight and easy to use, I prefer the Maclaren. The Combi does have a removable snack bar on the front so you child can easily get in and out. We left ours off so our son could get in and out on his own which was great, but it makes it look like it is missing something, not a big deal. The Volo has a much larger basket on the bottom and is easier to get things in and out of. The Combi basket is more of a mesh bag and is tougher to put things in especially if your child is older or larger. I find the Volo easier to fold up also because the Combi is a trifold you need two hands to fold both sides in to lock. As I said I think both are great strollers, but I found for Disney getting on and off the buses as well as carrying all the essentials, I found the Volo a better choice for our family.
Oh, I have looked at the new Maclarens and other than different color combinations and choices I can't tell a big difference between the strollers for the last few years.

I took an older MacLaren Daytripper. I just went to WDW in May with just the now 5 year old and I bought a new MacLaren Volo. I got it from www.babye-store.com for $75 with free shipping. The 2007 model comes with a raincover. The Volo was a few pounds lighter than my old MacLaren and had a carry strap so I could easily handle it and my bags on the bus alone with my DD.

If you really want a Peg Perego I have had good luck with www.albeebaby.com. They have a Pliko Lite for $109.

I have had both of those strollers and for such a large child I would go with the Pliko Lite if those were my only choices. Although I prefer a lighter/sturdy umbrella like the Maclaren or Inglesina for older/heavier kids.

I agree - I'm a stroller junkie: Mac Techno XT, Mac Triumph and Peg Pliko P3. My just turned 5 year old, 42lb and 43" daughter rides in the Mac XT as she is too long for both the Triumph and Peg. Incidentally, the Peg is only rated to 45lbs and so I wouldn't get that for a 5 year old at all. You will hardly be able to use it very long at all. The Mac XT is the way to go - we have had all 3 of these strollers purchased online and shipped to WDW resort as Canadian prices are absurd. Make sure from reputable Mac dealers or warranty is void. As well, if purchased in U.S. for Macs you must return there for service, but Peg told me that I could get stoller serviced in Canada if purchased in U.S. I do like the Pliko as it's a fab stroller, and my daughter loves riding on the back while her baby brother is up front, but she is too tall and heavy (even though under the weight) to ride in the Pliko, so I wouldn't encourage you purchasing one for your 5 year old.

Good luck on your stroller purchase - I only buy high-end strollers as the quality is the best and they last. Plus, the best reason - they steer like butter, even with older children in them.
