uk passports

i have an american passport, so i don't know how universal the rules are, but i contacted the US embassy to find out their view on the 6 month rule (DD will be traveling in september with a passport dying in october)..

the embassy said the passport only has to be valid for the travel period....no more than that..

but they said that we should check with the airlines, since it's the airlines that have the 6 month rule...

Is this the case with Virgin do you know?

I hadn't intended on renewing mine as I wanted to wait until after our wedding to get my name changed also, but it'll only have 4-5 months remaining when we go.....

You can get your passport changed into your married name up to 3 months before your wedding - however you will not be allowed to travel until you are married.

when we flew wit virgin in april my sons passport had 5 months and 2 weeks left on it, *** of that long exempemtion paragraph on virgin site i thought wed be ok, but were given a grilling at us side, we was let in but it took forever!
id say just get a new one they will add the remaining time anyway to it, id never do that again!

A child's passport lasts for 5 years initially but can then be extended for a further 5 years at no charge - so why not just get it done now and then you can stop worrying

My issue is that if I renew my passport now, it will be in my maiden name, and will be so for the next 10 years, as I believe it costs the same for a name change as a renewal, and I don't want to pay out twice....
It sounds like it would be best for me to renew now however, as everyone has said better safe than sorry, and it will prevent any hold ups or interrogations!

im afraid i wish this was true but you have to pay a childs passport is half the price of an adults as it only lasts 5 years, i just had to renew my sons and it cost me more than £50 as i used the check and send at the post office

yes that was the case years ago now they sting you for a 5 year one, its not even half the price!!! and no free renewal!

Virgin said we must have 6 months left on our passport when we return home. Our son was 10 days short of this but virgin said he must have a new one. We got a new one and they added the full 9mths that was left on his old one to the new one. better to get a new one as i wouldn't fancy any hassle on holiday

Last year there was no problem on First Choice with DS having only 4 months left on his passport. My understanding is that if you have less than 90 days of validity on the passport then your visa waiver admission will be valid for the period up until when your passport expires.

Different airlines have their own policy with respect to passport validity. These need to be respected otherwise you won't get to the US border to find out what happens there.

If one renews a passport I believe up to 9 months of validity will be carried over to the new passport.
