we'll I know one way to stay on my budget is to never-- I mean never buy anything I do not absolutley need--- I don't care if its 12c on sale ---- of I save half if I buy 2---

I have been decluttering my "guest" bedroom for most of the afternoon-- and haven't made a dent--- i can't even tell you the stuff I have found in this "guest" bedroom--- rotiserri oven ,crockpot, blender, more school supples than Staples:rotfl:legos????-- my kids haven't played with legos in years!!!!!!!!!

I really should have called the "clean sweep " people they would have a had a field day with this room---

the sad thing is that this "guest" bedroom has NEVER seen a guest---- the door is always shut when we have company-- and my family knows no one I repeat no one is allowed in that room---

how do you all balance buying stuff on sale and not turning your house into a warehouse---

My DH won't let me :)

He'd have trouble NOT letting me stock up on legos though...
sounds like you could have a great garage sale.

We donated a ton of stuff to Goodwill when we moved and I never want to get into all that stuff again. Sounds like you need to donate some stuff! Or have a big garage sell. I read somewhere when you buy a new item, throw away an item as well.

I have TWO guest rooms and twice as much stuff I bet!!! I will be having a tag/garage sale in a few weeks.

No matter what system you put in place, it will have NO EFFECT unless you follow the system (I have learned this the hard way!!).
Since I put myself on a strict budget, I don't bring as much stuff home. I just need to get rid of all the toys and clothes my daughter has outgrown and stuff I've held onto for far too long.

I'm limited to the closet in the guest room - anything I can shove in there can stay. lol I try to only buy presents though. As far as household supplies, I have the hall closet - anything that can fit in there stays (detergent, etc) - once it gets full, I don't even look at the clearance sales and only buy what we need.

I really need a bigger house though... I enjoy the thrill of bargain hunting!

The rule in my house is, if you haven't touched it in a year it gets thrown out or given away or sold.

Keeps the clutter to zero :thumbsup2

I could have written that! Our guest room is FULL of STUFF.

We have decided to have a garage sale.... I am so excited!:thumbsup2

I feel your pain. We're in the process of moving and the amount of STUFF I've found is slightly nauseating. Thankfully the next house is smaller and doesn't have a garage so I won't be able to stock up on things 'just in case'. I gave away a large box of yankee candles at work and had to throw away more bath stuff than I'd like to admit b/c it had migrated to the back of my closet and I was uncomfortable with using it so long after buying it.

I love clearance sales though and it's going to be really, really hard to stop buying things just because they're 75-90% off and I might need it someday.

I used to be like this, but I mostly stopped a few years ago. Now, I ask myself if I need something before I buy it. Usually I don't.

Carrying very little cash has helped a lot. I never have more than a few bucks... not having much means I don't want to pick up that witch frame that's only 50 cents after Halloween.

And I keep my extra "clearance" stuff in one closet--no more. I read Clean Sweep and that guy on Oprah. Having space means more to me than things.

My parents house is SO cluttered I'm not allowed to go there anymore. I haven't been in 5 years. It's sad.

How did you break into my house and get into MY guestroom?!

 Mine is exactly the same. We never have guests, so it has become the dumping ground and it looks as bad as a lot of the rooms on Clean House. I am slowly, slowly wittling away at it..but all that does it put the stuff in a different room in the house..it just needs to GO!!

Sell it all and go back to Disney on your "finds" in your guest room! Or pay off a credit card, or car loan, or mortgage!!! :lmao: Good luck and keep working at it, you'll get to the back of the room one day soon!

Im getting better, If it hasnt been touched in a year or two , I get rid of it.

I hate having garage sales, Craig's list is my friend.

Im also learning just because it is 90% off at Target it isnt a deal unless I need it!!

I want a guest room :rotfl: We live in a little 2 bedroom house that is just under 800 square foot and have enough crap to fill a house twice the size. I'm working on the same thing though....but it's more pressing because it's in my living room and kitchen too.

I have trouble wanting to get rid of DD's things. We want a second child and so we have hung onto everything for over 5 years now. I was so excited because I got pregnant in February and my due date was my DDs birthday....we would have been SO set if we had had a girl....but I miscarried and now I'm back to the point of "should I just get rid of it". What's worse is I still have a ton of diapers cluttering my car because I haven't had the heart to deal with them (it helps that I'm not driving the car right now since DH has been out of town training). I just need to get rid of it....but then what if we do end up having another child? Some stuff I'm sure would work if we had a girl and it's a 50/50 chance we could use it. It just makes getting rid of stuff harder. If I knew we were done it would be much easier.

I am a big clearance shopper, and I like to "stock up" just in case...

I had to force myself to stop going to stores, because when I go, I buy. I love the thrill of the hunt for that great bargain! So, I have really tried to go cold turkey, no more shopping. The downside, I used to have a nice little stash of gifts pre-bought for family members that I got great deals on. Now I actually have to shop when a birthday is coming up, and it kills me to know that I probably could have gotten something nicer, and cheaper, if I had been shopping regularly. The up-side...now I only have about 2 years worth of shampoo, toothpaste, candles and holiday supplies in my basement...no guest room in my house, so it is all down in the basement for me.

Here is a good way to clean out your guest room...get pregnant and need that room! :rotfl2:

I second the yard sale. A great way to make money and de-clutter.

Op here-- actually the whole reason I'm tackling this room -- is my 13 year old wants to move into that room--- and now his sisters are each getting there own room( were sharing).

I really do not want to have a yard sale--- I just want the stuff out of my house- If i keep it around for a yard sale -- I'm afraid I'll never get rid of the stuff-- it will find its way back in----

I'm dropping off kids stuff at my local consignmnet shop--- donating whatever is good to our local church thrift store-- and the rest into the garbage.

Have the yard sale...and have your van or car or whatever ready to take EVERYTHING left to Goodwill after it's over.

Even if you don't want the yardsale, just getting it out of your house makes you feel so much better.

I stopped collecting things, and got rid of 99% of the items that I did collect.

And I really only buy things if I have a project that I'm in the middle of. I don't buy things with the intention of "someday".

And don't worry about stocking up on things. I remember seeing some show where this family stocked up on stuff. The entire tub/shower area of this one bathroom was full to the ceiling with toilet paper.

to be totally honest-- its just not my guest room-- thats just the nightmare room--

the rest of the house looks neat on the outside--- but every closests, drawers, garage, attics , shelves are just crammed with junk---

my house needs to go on a diet---- I threw out 3 lg garbage bags out yesterday-- and have a bag ready to go to the consignment shop---

and I can't even begin to tell you about my kids rooms--- I'm afraid to look under their beds

I was the same way except our spare room was my ebay room. I quit ebay over a year ago and still haven't gotten rid of everything. I did donate a ton of the clothes to my son's school for their yard sale. It felt so good to get rid of all that stuff. I did have a yard sale a couple of months ago but only got rid of half the stuff. At least it was mostly the big items so I made almost $1K which was great. I'm hoping to turn our spare room into a guest room. It won't be used often but it's a great way for me to keep the clutter out. I've been putting ads in the paper for the rest of this stuff and it's almost all gone. I'm using the money to paint the room and other house projects.

The way I'm curbing it is I don't do much shopping, and I only stock up on great sales but not months at a time. I just now stock up for about 2-3 months worth of toilet paper, or toothpaste, and shampoo. Actually I don't need to buy any of it since I'm still working thru our stockpiles. At least I'm not adding to it unless it's something I can get free or I'm running low on. I actually find I get better deals on Christmas presents on Black Friday or closer to Christmas. That way I buy it and wrap it so it's not sitting in a closet forgotten about.
