I've seen the ugly Betty show advertised and wondered what it's about. Is it any good? Is it something I could pick up mid-season? Kind of a strange name for a show.

I have wondered about this one too. I assume there is an ugly Betty in the show? Can you do a whole show about that? Is it like Seinfeld? A show about nothing?

I LOVE Ugly Betty! It's all a matter of perspective. Up close Betty can be beautiful!

We like it. Its a pretty funny show. We missed the first couple of episodes and we were able to pick it up right away. Basically it centers around Betty. She is less than attractive, but smart. Not very fashionable, but works for a fashion magazine. She doesn't quite fit in with her coworkers and they are a bit mean to her. Most of the episodes are about her not fitting in and trying, but in the end, being herself is what works for her. Family is from the poorer side of town so she needs the job and sees it as a step to get to where she wants to go. Its a really funny show. It started as a novela on spanish tv.

At least I assume that Ugly Betty is a funny show. With a name like that you'd bet I'd want to be laughing.

It is one of the only new shows I watch, it is cute. There is a mystery but it isn't a major part of the show. I don't think it would be hard to pick up mid season nothing very deep but a good mix of characters.

You don't have to be terribly familiar with Betty to enjoy her. We have DVR so we enjoy some Betty on Sunday afternoons.

Its not ruanchy. At least I dont' think it is. The sweetpea watches it with me. There are some things in there, but not that bad. The sweetpea is 10 and she thinks its funny. I have no problems letting her watch. Then again, she loves Grey's Anatomy too. Yeah, Im a bad mom, I let her watch that show.

It comes on before Grey's Anatomy - I know because if I'm not home I have to set 3 VCR's for that time slot (Smallville, Survivor, and Ugly Betty).

Did any of you see The Devil Wears Prada? This show has kind of a similar premise - unfashionable smart girl goes to work for snooty fashion magazine. It's one of those shows that is kind of comedy, kind of drama. I guess a dramedy? Often funny or satirical, but with some moments of sweetness and character/relationship development thrown in.

I haven't seen Devil Wears Prada but read the book, it is similiar but Betty's boss isn't the wicked witch like Devil but she does work at the same office.

Ugly Betty is the American version of a Columbian telenovella of the same name. Betty Suarez is a plain-Jane from working class Queens who takes on a job as executive assistant to the womanizing editor in chief of a top fashion magazine. Her co-workers are shallow fashionistas who disdain Betty, but her strong spirit and gentle nature win out in the end.

I remember reading about the Columbian telenovella in the New York Times and it feautured a truly ugly Betty who slowly undergoes a physical transformation into a great beauty. I wonder if that will happen in this version?

I liked the original Spanish soap BETTY LA FEA also, but UGLY BETTY is great.
