Woke up yesterday morning and felt a burning sensation on my upper lip, kind of itchy......it was a fever blister. Oh, how I hate fever blisters!!!!!!

Try Valtrex. It's prescribed for herpes simplex 2 (genital) but also works for simplex 1 (oral). I have a prescription for when I get cold sores.

At the first sign of tingling/bump on your lip, take 2 pills. 12 hours later, take 2 more.

I use this in conjunction with Abreva, again at the first sign of a cold sore, and my cold sores never last more than 2 days. In fact, on Christmas Eve I woke up with one (UGH!) and now it's gone. My cold sores used to last a week or more.

The last thing I do is an old wive's tale but it also works. On the first day, get a Q-tip and dip it into acetone nail polish remover. Put the Q-tip on the cold sore for 10 minutes. It stings like I-don't-know-what, but it really dries it up and makes it disappear!

I know I sound like a commercial but I swear by this method!

Thanks for the tips. I'll definately try them.

You might also try Zovirax. It is a generic anti-viral that is pretty cheap. BTW, Valtrex and Zovirax are both prescriptions.
Valtrex did not work for me and the cheap Zovirax did , go figure.
Bestr advice I can give it to keep one of the prescriptions in your purse as both are only marginally effective if not started immediately at first tingle.

Abreva is the only OTC treatment that the FDA says has been shown to cure cold sores and heat blisters. I use it constantly. It's pricey, but worth it.

Take one L-Lysine tablet a day, and you'll never get another fever blister. L-Lysine is an essential amino acid; when our bodies run low on it, fever blisters happen. It's easily available - I think WalMart even sells it. Look for it in the vitamin / supplements section of your favorite store.

I used to get the WORST fever blisters that would spread up into my nose, or all the way down my chin. My mother heard about the L-Lysine cure, and I tried it. That was about 20 years ago, and I've been fever blister free ever since.

You may feel the tingling of one about to happen, but just take a couple of double doses that day (I don't think it's easy to overdose on this stuff), and it'll go away.

Good Luck!

Charlene

Zovirax is my drug of choice too. I get a prescription from my dentist and carry the stuff in my purse. Sometimes YEARS will go by and I don't ever use it but I like to have it ready when I need it.
