well, live and learn.... the most expensive part of my long anticipated trip is going to be a rental car. I guess I got spoiled by mid Florida cheap deals! I can't find anything for less than 1200.00 for 2 weeks, probably b/c I'm p/u in one state, dropping in another.....oh well....I'm still searching, but no luck anywhere. Out west, going interstate is an expensive idea..... any ideas or advice in addition to all the other great advice, still appreciated!:thumbsup2
still looking for phx-lax late Sept-early Oct........ so far,Fox is the cheapest by hundreds of dollars, and I am tempted to use them,in spite of the reviews they get.....sigh......

One way interstate rentals are always more expensive unless you catch a "drive-out" special where an agency is looking to move vehicles (most often from Florida to North East).

The best advice I can give you is limit your one way to as few days as possible. For example if you plan on taking a two week vacation, but only are only driving from location A to B over the course of 2 days, it's best to return the one-way rental after your arrive at point B and then use a round trip rental picking up from point B and return to point B.

This may seem silly, and I don't know how many people you are transporting, but you can rent a small uhaul truck from phx to lax for less than 200.00. Drop it off and then rent a car there. Might be cheaper.

I get the humor of your post, but it's not like you would be renting the UHaul for two weeks, the price you're quoting is probably a 2 - 3 day rental with mileage.

toss the kids in the back of a uhaul? sure,I'm game!:rotfl:

gee, no love for the uhaul idea;)

So I got curious at the cost if you break the rental up into seperate reservations like jlewisinsyr suggested.

It does look quite a bit cheaper. Here's what I tried without knowing your actual travel dates.
I looked at Budget for:
1) Pickup/dropoff in PHX Sept 24-Oct 1 Cost = $305 + tax
2) One way rental PHX - LAX Oct 1-Oct 2 Cost = $152 + tax
3) Pickup/dropoff LAX Oct 2 - Oct 8 Cost = $242 + tax
Grand total = $699 + tax
So definitely better than your $1200.
This is for an economy car with no discount codes used.
good luck.

Probably because uHaul is terrible and unreliable. I can't post my real opinion of that company because I'm sure such language is against board rules ;)

Plus, their trucks aren't exactly comfortable and think of the gas cost!
