Ugh I left my homemade pea soup on the counter all night

I would toss it in the trash. Better not to take the chance of getting sick from it.

I have left things out overnight by mistake (a whole batch of buffalo wings a few weeks ago), and I get so mad at myself and it feels like such a waste, but I'm not willing to risk the food poisoning.

I know. It just makes me sick to throw it out, but it beats really being ill or causing my family to be so.

This may be TMI, but look at it this way. You would probably spend more money in cleaning supplies and electricity with all the throw up laundry you would be doing.

sorry, just trying to make you feel better.

Isn't that the truth. Pea soup would not be a friendly clean up!

I like to live on the edge, so I would eat it (well not pea soup, because the mere thought of eating pea soup would make me throw up).

I've left many food items out overnight and fed them to my family and no one has ever been sick.

What are the ingredients (other than peas?) If there's any meat or dairy I'd toss it. If not I like to live on the edge too like the OP - I'd refridgerate it awhile, give it the old sniff test when you take it out, if it's funky, it's got to go. If not I'd bring it to a boil & then simmer it - then I'd eat it.

I grew up on a farm where my grandmother would slap some bologna & mayo on bread for the workers & those sandwiches sat out in the hot sun on their truck or tractor for hours til lunch. Some days she'd throw a hunk of cheese in the bag too. No one ever got sick - we must have had a high tolerance for such things!

Mayo has Vinegar or lemon juice in it that retards bacterial growth.

I was assuming a ham bone but I agree, if there isn't any meat I might heat it to a boil for 5 minutes.

If your soup is vegetarian, you might be able to salvage it. If there is any meat or meat stock, it is garbage.

My house is very cold so I'd chance it if it was just veg in it. If it felt warm I'd chuck it.

Sorry this happened. I am one that would toss it, too. Just to be on the cautious side. I once made a double batch of mac and cheese and accidentally left it out over night. I was not happy but tossed it.

Reminds me of a story my sister told me. While she was living in Spain she had a roommate who cooked up some pork. He left it on the counter and ate it over the course of 3 days. He didn't get sick.

Is it cream based? Any dairy? Then Yes it's spoiled.

Broth based? Any fat? Then yes it's spoiled.

Pretty much the answer is yes it's spoiled unless it is nothing but peas and water and veggies.

Nothing added, but even then the natural sugers in the peas and the ambiant tempeture would still be a prime medium for bacteria growth.

Honestly I'd say toss it. Even a high boil for 5+ minutes is risky.

Ewwww yuck, but yes it goes along the same lines as my family. We travelled outside of the US once & everyone recommended we get food from this "food van" on the side of the road. Well when we got there, the van had been out for hours, in the blazing hot sun, with no refridgeration or AC or ice. The food was stored in these big metal pans covered with foil. I was NOT getting the pork or potato salad, I was NOT gonna do it. After watching about 20 other locals order & eat the same thing, I figured "when in Rome...." It was the best darn pork & potato salad I ever ate, and no one got sick!

Even though I grew up where we didn't refridgerate much meat or dairy (milk came straight from the cow to the table - and sat out all day) - I am very picky about my meat & dairy as an adult. I barely eat at buffets or picnics when I don't know how long something's been sitting out!

I think it would be okay if you didn't leave it out too long, was it still warm? Over night for me would be about 6 hours, taste it and see if its okay.

I would throw it out. It's not worth the risk of getting sick. Pea soup would make me sick even if it's fresh.:rotfl:

We visit Columbia and Venezuela a lot to see my husband's family and they live out on a farm far from the major city so they leave a lot of food out because they only have small freezers/fridges. I've never gotten sick and these stories remind me of how good the food is lol.
