Good morning.

With all this talk about upgrades I was wondering if the upgrades are just if you book a GTY or do you have a chance of getting upgrades if you have an assigned cabin?

This cruise we're in a cat 4 so I don't think they'd give us a suite but we do want to book a 7 night eastern while we are onboard and take advantage of the discount/onboard credit. I don't like the idea of a GTY for us because I am a very light sleeper and don't want to wind up in a noisy location but I was thinking of booking a cat 8 assigned cabin and hoping for an upgrade to a balcony.

Thoughts?

There is always a "chance" for an upgrade. IMO, you should always book the Cat. Cabin you will be happy with. Also, since you mention you are a light sleeper and all - you may want to stick to choosing your own cabin and requesting "no upgrades" because an upgrade may be a higher catergory but in a less desirable location.

What she said ::yes:: I book a cat 11 and reguest 'no upgrade'. I love the deck 7 aft location and wouldn't want to be 'upgraded' to a cat 9 on deck one or two.

While I would be happy with a cat 8 I would really like a balcony but we may not be able to afford it so my thought was book the 8 and hope for an upgrade to a balcony or see how money is when the date is closer and try to pay to upgrade ahead of time.

You will have to pay the "new" price of any upgrades if you wait...if the price goes up (which it usually does as the cruise date gets closer). For example, I had booked a cat 8 and then downgraded to a sph when it because available a year later. I saved only a few hundred dollars instead of the thousand it was cheaper at the time I booked.

Remember, while people post upgrade news on the DIS all the time, there are many many more cruisers who are not upgraded and don't post that....

Our one and only upgrade was from a Cat 4 (assigned room) to a Cat 3. So upgrades do happen for all types of rooms.

That said - always book the room you want. Do not book a lower cabin in hopes of getting an upgrade. Most likely you will not get one. Also if you are extremely happy with the room assignment you got, it doesn't hurt to note "no upgrade" on your reservation. I have done that when I had a SPH room.

You can also try to buy an upgrade at the port on departure day. If there are cabins available DCL will offer them out as reasonably priced upgrades. You need to be at the port when it opens and one of the first in line, as they go fast. They would definately be cheaper than buying them before the cruise...but there's no guarantee that any will be available.

Wow, never heard of an upgrade that far up the category list. We were upgraded from a category 10 to a category 6 with a balcony. As is normal with Disney, there is no apparent reason for us being chosen.

On our second cruise, we were upgraded from an assigned cat. 11 to a cat. 9.
