Uber - how to pay?

Actually, I do have another question. Do most of you ride by yourself/with friends, or have you used the "pool" feature. Is the Uber picking up people who all want to go to the same location for this?
@Disney Addicted Personally, I ride by myself or with friends using the UberX option. This is a standard car designed to fit up to 4 people (You and 3 others), but it's dedicated to you/your group and only you/your group. So it will pick you/your group and drop you directly off at your destination, without any additional stops. Uber also allows you to split your fare with friends who are also using the app - and it takes care of all the math for you. It will split it evenly among those whom you've chosen to split the fare with. When using this feature, you select the person you'd like to split the fare with through the app and it will send them a text/notification asking them to accept the split fare option for the current trip. Really helpful when traveling with friends.

Pool can accommodate up to 2 passengers, you and one other. You put your destination in and along the way to your destination your driver may stop and pick up/drop off other passengers heading in the same general direction. This is usually cheaper, although in my experience, not always significantly but the trade off is that it could take you a little longer to get to your destination, depending on the amount of additional pick ups/drop offs along the way.

Lots of great info here, thanks!! I will also be taking Uber for the first time and bought a Groupon for new users, 3 rides for 6 dollars. I'm just wondering, when I book my uber will my poor driver get any payment other than my tip? Just wondering if Groupon reimburses the driver for their expense or how that works???
@mya1k9 Uber drivers are paid directly by Uber. They make a percentage of their drives and from my understanding are paid out weekly. Don't worry about the Groupon, go ahead and use it, it won't undercut the Uber driver's profit from your trip :)

Great information, thanks for the reply! I think I'm ready now. I better be. Flying out tomorrow! :)

I did not know this!!! We usually just do one way each, but this is still good to know.

We usually do the one way each thing too, but split fare does work great for larger groups or some of the other, more expensive car options.

I'm glad I searched & found this thread. :)

One thing I did not see asked: As a single rider using UberX, do you sit in the back like a taxi or the front seat?

Tip your uber driver. Please. And that means bring cash.
I haven't had an Uber driving take a tip offered in the last two years...and that includes Uber trips in multiple cities on both coasts. I don't know if drivers are discouraged, but at some point I quit offering. The one exception was the lovely driver who helped me out in the Bronx a few weeks ago - went way above and beyond the call of duty, and still turned down a tip. I wrote a glowing review instead.

I ride by myself most of the time. I'm not a fan of pooling unless it's with friends - which I have done when we are going in the same general direction, especially during a surge.

I hope that's true, but I'm not sure. I had a driver tell me recently that all the price drops from Uber have made it likely that he's going to quit driving for them soon.

One thing for those of you who are new to Uber - pay attention to the pricing! These days you have to acknowledge when Uber has "Surge Pricing" in effect, so make sure you look closely before you commit to a much more expensive ride than you were expecting. I use Uber between SNA and Disney all the time and haven't hit surge pricing during my normal travel hours (noon-ish arriving at SNA, 5am departing Disney in general).

These are all such great tips!! I appreciate you all taking the time to explain.
I will be using Uber from LAX to our hotel and back in April.

Also drivers live and die by their ratings literally. A 4 star is actually a FAIL to UBER and Lyft which can affect their ability to continue driving. I always rate a 5 unless there's a specific reason to go below and always add said comments. I take Uber and Lyft weekly around town and have only had to rate below 5 about 3 times out of 30ish rides.

Just food for thought! And Uber drivers can accept tips and drivers are trying to encourage the company to build it into the app like Lyft does.

My son and I will be using Lyft to get from SNA to Disneyland on Wednesday morning. I've still got a credit to use with Lyft, but I used up my Uber credit, so we'll do Lyft this time. So far I prefer Lyft because I can add a tip in the app, but I've tried both. This will be our first time using it at an airport, and I admit I'm a little nervous about finding our driver in all the hustle and bustle and craziness of the airport! My son likes taxis better for some reason, but my husband is strangely uneasy about us taking a taxi without him. Not sure why he likes Lyft/Uber better, but oh well. Doesn't matter to me, and if it makes him feel better, great.

We used Lyft from SNA to our hotel in South Harbor without any issues. You should be just fine!! I plan to use them again when we go back in August.

so glad I found this thread, going to LA in June and planning on using UBER for the first time. A few friends uses it frequently so thanks for the tip about getting them to invite me.

Honestly we average $5 for tips for most airport rides , possibly more if they had to help with luggage or offered extra help.
It's more a courtesy but still should be voluntary based on service.
