We will be arriving at MCO on a Sunday in January at approx. 6pm, it will be 3 of us, no children. Should we wait until we get off the plane to order an uber? Should we just take a taxi or is uber much cheaper? Does anyone know the approximate cost? Thanks for any advice.

I don't know the approximate cost, but you can go on their app/site and do a dummy reservation and see what it comes out to. Of course, different times of year/day could come into play.
As far as when to order it - all I can say is wait till you are at the pick up area & already have your luggage. We use them almost exclusively when traveling from MCO to WDW and we don't usually have much of a wait at all. Although at 6 you may be waiting a few more minutes.
Sorry I can't offer more information, I'm sure others will chime in. Have a fun time on your trip!

You should wait until you get to the area where the rideshare pickups are before you order your uber. Definitely don't order it on the plane. The uber could be there in 2 minutes and you'd miss it--and be charged for it.

I've seen okay rideshare prices from MCO to POFQ--like around $40 or so--but I also had a trip once where the uber from MCO to FQ was around $75 (including tip), which I thought was way too much. After that trip, I started comparing uber and lyft rates and if they both seemed too high to me, I used Mears Connect. But since there're 3 of you, Mears Connect isn't the bargain it is for one person.

And, yes, generally rideshares are less expensive than a taxi.

Both Lyft & Uber have information on their websites about using their services at MCO. As mentioned, do not order on the plane, don't even order while waiting for your bags, wait until you have your bags and you're in the spot to be picked up. MCO can be confusing, you won't save time by preordering at the risk of not being where you need to be for pick up.
