U.S. Valid Passports????? Anyone Else?????

I found an article that talks about passports from Greece being new because the old ones are too easy to forge, so everyone holding one will need to get a new one by the end of this year. The new ones are only valid for five years for adults. For children under 14, they're good for two years. For children 14 and over, they're good until the child turns 18 and then they have to get an adult one. Perhaps this is what the other poster was referring to. I checked the United States State Department site and it says passports for peopel 16 and older are still good for 10 years. Hope this helps!

Please post where this information can be found on the Dept of State website. There are no press releases regarding this posted on their website & no updated information anywhere that I can find.

This is what I was physically told by the agent at the post office on Saturday the 13th when I went to get a passport. I also checked the website and there is nothing on the website yet about this. I asked why they did not lower the price (I also had to write two checks), and he did not know this information. That’s all the help I can give you. I was surprised since I had not read this anywhere either.

I did let my TA know also.

For me, traveling - cruising or not - is much easier with the passport. I use it whenever I fly. It's packed for my work trip tomorrow. The reason is that it's standard. While I live in NY now, I had difficulty traveling with a MN drivers license right when I got the new design before the books of state licenses were updated and had trouble convincing people it wasn't fake. NY just changed their design and I have a new one, so to be on the safe side, I flash my passport.

I've never been pulled out for extra screening when I use a passport for ID. However, strangely, DH is always pulled out if he uses his miltary ID. It feels more secure in my pockey because if the increased weight - I know it's there. And I don't have to dig the license out of that annoying clear plastic wallet pocket that annoys me.

I will believe the change when I see it in print. It sounds like someone at the PO misunderstood what they read. This is a rather big change and considering the press & information that has been released about the new deadlines and even the recent inquiry about delaying it yet again...changing the passport to being good for only 5 years would have been in the press, on the government website, and TAs would have been notified about it.

I can't imagine why he would say such a thing :confused3

I went on th 13 of may for me and my DH. We went to the post office and had everything done there (photo's and paperwork). Of course they charged me $15 a piece for each of us, plus the cost of the passport itself. So by the time I was done it cost us $224.00  for two. But it was easy and painless and all done at the same place. And we figured we better get it now instead of next year when they could double the price. With todays world it'smoney well spent

you can check out the State Department's website (www.state.gov) for the official guidance

Just a note about the web site. It has all the necessary forms which makes it really easy. I liked filling out all the forms at home before taking the family to the post office to apply for the passports. Make sure you check the hours your local post office accepts applications. Ours only did 10a.m.-4p.m. M-F.

Also, both parents need to be present or have a notarized letter from absent parent allowing the child to receive a passport. I would assume this would be so non-custodial parents couldn't leave the country without the other parent's knowledge/permission.

We found the process painless . . . mine was a renewal through the mail with new pics, everyone else their first application. Biggest hassle was getting a time when DH could come with the kids and me.

Yes, this is the big hassle around here. They do passport applications from like 10 to 2 p.m., meanind DH would need to miss half a day of work! Ridiculous.

We just cruised with a BC for my son with no problems. DH and I have passports from way back. Having them for kids on cruises is a waste of money IMO.

If you are the only parent shown on the Birth Certificate you do not need to have any documentation from the other parent
