I'm headed down in December with my 5 year old son. I plan on taking my camera as well as my video camera. What's the best kind of bag to carry to put everything in? I didn't really want to carry a backpack but I need something with a lot of room

I always take my backpack; I have a film camera and a digital camera, and depending on the time of year I might have a sweatshirt in there too. I also just got a camcorder, so I'll likely add that to the bag, and i carry my DH's extra pins. If it gets to be too much, I can always put it in a locker. I'd rather have everything with me though...

I also carry a backpack, but it is about half the size of the normal backpacks you see out there. I was able to hold our camcorder, digital camera, and 3-4 bottles of water. The sides had two pockets -- perfect for cell phones -- and there was a front slot for tickets, passes, etc.

I got it at WalMart.

I find a small, drawstring backpack works the best. The kind that you can open and close easily via a drawstring (usually with some sort of do-hickey to secure it) and then another flap over the top.

I find this best because it's easy to get all the way open and all the way closed quickly (when you need to find something like an autograph book quickly, or need to pack up in a hurry), yet because of the drawstring and the flap it's also pretty secure. The one i have has one outside pocket as well.

Good luck!

Backpack is the way to go! Especially in December since weather can change from warm to cold. We always carry sweatshirts, earmuffs, mittens (yes, mittens!). The last time we went in December, temps dropped into low 40's with wind! We were so glad to have extra layers to put on. Saw way too many children freezing (in shorts and sleeveless tops) because parents didn't plan at all for weather. If you don't want to carry backpack, you can always store extra clothing in lockers.

If you don't favor backpacks, maybe a messenger bag? I use one often--keeps everything in front of me when I want it or sling it around the other way towards the back. Pretty roomy as well--but they can cause some aches and pains by the days end. I would suggest getting a more ergonomic fitting one at a sporting goods store--they usually have ones with extra padding and a wider straps. There are ones made out of bollistics nylon for durability and water protection, which could come in handy. :thumbsup2

I'm posting this pic to show you my bag! DBF got it at Old Navy the day before our trip for like $3!! I figured, "Oh, I'll just carry my pocket book around, no problem." We brought that just in case and THANK GOD we did because after one day of a shouler bag, that backpack was a lifesaver. I put the video camera, two camera, my cell phone, etc.

Drawstring backpack is the way to go!

I suggest a camera backpack. I take mine and it protects all of my stuff on each ride.

I use a Vera Bradley backpack, it's smaller then a regular backpack and is way more stylish. They are available in 15 colors.

Wouldn't those drawstring backpacks cut into your sholders?

It has normal straps like a backpack, it's the top that is secured via drawstring and a flap.

I use a healthy bag you can get one from LLBean, seen them on other web sites as well. They com in different sizes so you can get the size you want. When I so in the summer I have a small one, but in the winter I have an XLarge one so it holds sweatshirts.
The bag has different pockets to hold all your stuff and keep you organized. It only had one strap but will lay across your back in a more comfortable position.
