Jazz (19 lb. bichon) had her rabbies shot last night and her hind leg is giving her trouble today. I'm sure it will be better by tomorrow but she's really not feeling well and I was wondering if I could give her a little tylenol or motrin for the pain?

I figured I would ask here as I get different answers on the internet.

thanks,
Kim

I know my sister has given her golden retrievers tylenol as instructed by her vet. I would give your vet a call before you did it, just to be sure. Also, you would need help figuring the dosage.

My vet recommends coated aspirin (Ascriptin or generic) for my dogs. I'd check with your vet because I don't know the dosage for a small dog.

My vet wrote down a list for me for my healthy Border Collie, 1 Aspirin, 1 regular strength Tylenol or 100mg Motrin (1/2 tablet). My Dog had an eye infection a few months ago and I went with 1/2 an adult aspirin, as in the buffered baby aspirin, instead of the full dose and he showed quick improvement. Since smaller dogs can be easily poisoned I would definitely check with a Vet first. You might need children's doses for the animal and those conversion charts can only be found in Dr's offices.

BTW, you might want to check the injection site for signs of infection before giving the dog anything. Cardinal signs of infection for anyone, human or furry, are pain, red, hot, swollen.

Thanks for the advice. I've put a call into the vet and am waiting for him to get back from lunch. The tech told me this sometimes happens along w/ fever and not to be too concerned. (I really wasn't, I just wanted to make my baby a little more comfy is all)

She is eating a little ice cream so I don't have to worry about her appetite at least. The tech did say sometimes they will run a slight fever for a day or two after the shot.

She's just so tired and the couple times she has walked, she walks with her head down. She's afraid right now of Britt because Britt pet her this AM b4 school on the back leg and she yelped :( .

thanks again

I was told that ibuprofen was toxic for dogs--you might want to double check on the Motrin for her.

Our dog takes 1/2 an aspirin 2x's a day for leg pain (as needed). She is 12 lbs.

Our vet recommended St Joseph(aspirin) but we have a Jack Russell so it was only a 1/2 tablet. Good luck. I hate it when my dogs are not feeling well because they cant tell you what hurts. They just look at you with their puppy dog eyes.

I was told that as well. They aren't able to clear it and it causes renal failure, intestinal bleeding, etc. My neighbor killed her Jack Russell terrier with Ibuprofen. She felt HORRIBLE but called everyone with a dog to tell them not to make the same mistake she did.

I heard from the vet. He said don't give her anything right now. She's sleeping so he doesn't think the pain is that bad.

The vet said never tylenol, I guess they had a cat in the past who ended up dying from an extra strength tylenol.

He said if she isn't better by tomorrow to give him a call in the AM.

Thanks all for the advice.

Dawn, I hope your fur baby is doing well this week.

Definitely as your vet about dosages. An animal's metabolism differs from ours and they could need much less (or more) of a specific medication.

Tylenol is a HUGE no-no for cats. Never, under any circumstances, give Tylenol (or it's generic) to cats.

Acetaminophen is quite toxic to felines. One 250mg size tablet is often enough to be fatal. However, canines are much more tolerant of it and a 50 lb. dog would need to ingest about seven 500mg tablets before becoming fatal. Google "canine acetaminophen toxicity" for more details.
