Sure! Buy packs of Men's T-Shirts (undershirts) at walmart and then grab a tye-dye kit from Michaels.

On ebay someone is selling ty dye shirts that have a mickey head on the front. (search for it to see a picture) I've been trying to figure out how to create the design myself and plan on experimenting. Does anyone with tydye experience have suggestions so I don't waste a bunch of time or $ trying to figure it out??

I don't know how big your girls are, but the Dollar Trees around me have kid's (white or colors) cotton Hanes t-shirts that go up to XL for of course-$1! Michael's has tie dye kits that are good for 20 shirts for around $10-sometimes they are on sale or you can use the 40% off coupon that comes in the Sunday paper (or AC Moore's coupon).

I would get the packages of Men's or Boys tshirts. They are a little thinner though. Also, you could suggest to the children's parent to bring a white tshirt for dying. Have a couple on hand if a girl forgets to bring one.

Also, I second the usage of coupons. If you don't have a Michael's nearby, you can also get 40% coupons from Hobby Lobby.

Another thing you could do is to get the indivdual boxes of clothing dye and use that.

You could do some tie dyed "looking" designs using Sharpies and then spraying rubbing alcohol on them. I did this with my DS 3rd grade class and they turned out cute. They left the backs empty so that they could autograph them. They're definitely less messy than tie dying and it's easier to have a large group doing it at the same time.

my daughter was invited to a party where they did tye dye and
we were asked to bring a shirt to tye dye. Didn't think anything of bringing on our shirt!! That way everyone gets the right size and the host can just get the ash and dyes!!

Thanks for all the replies . I already sent out the invites so I cannot have them bring there own shirts but I found them today at Walmart 5 shirts for $7. and I have a 50% off Michaels coupon but I like the sharpie idea better. I might have to try it before hand.

Our library is doing this for our summer reading program. With all those kids I was looking for a somewhat non-messy way of doing it. At JoAnn Fabrics I found tie dye spray paint. We're having the kids bring their own shirt and then you scrunch it up and spray the can of paint. Washes right off hands. It's about $5 a bottle so I don't know how cheap but less messy.

That's the beauty of it--you can do whatever you want. When you spray the alcohol on it, the ink will begin to smear through the fabric. Some kids did pictures, but the cutest ones were the ones where they bunched up sections and put a couple of rubber bands (think like a tube) and colored between the rubberbands. Spray the alcohol (saturate if it's bunched) and let it dry before removing the rubberbands. Or put 6 or 8 dots in the middle of a large circle (diameter of a storage bowl or small sand bucket) with a couple of coordinating colors (smaller than a dime). Put that over the bowl or bucket with a rubber band and spray with alcohol--the ink will run to the rubberbands and stop.

Before I did this with the kids, I took an old shirt at home and made designs for them to see what each one would look like. My son ended up doing designs that were close enough that it looks like a Mickey! Then he did smaller "tied" designs which have a kaleidescope effect.

Get that old shirt out and start experimenting!!

I second the pp with the dharma trading if you have time to get them. They have a kit for 20 shirts on sale for $22. Their dyes are the best! DSIL is a tie dye addict even her wedding dress was tie dyed - I have photos . Anyway, she made some tie dye shirts for my DSs for July 4th about 5 years ago. Well, after three kids worth of wear, the colors on the last of those shirts is almost as bright as the day she gave them to us. The only dye's she uses come from Dharma. Also she swears the best T-shirts are Hanes Tagless. Double check those shirts you bought. They have to be 100% cotton or they won't hold the dye.

Another thought - Small lunch bags filled with fabric paint and tied with string so there is no air in the bags. Tack shirts onto cardboard with straight pins and put them somewhere that you don't care if there is a mess. Prick the bags with a pin a few dozen times in various places and dress girls in plastic gloves and a trashbag and let them throw the lunch bags full of paint at their shirts. Voila splatter painted shirts. Messy but fun.
