TY Dis Friends - Now what? The White Mountains, NH.. UPDATE#35

We stayed in Lincoln a few weeks ago and loved it; unfortunately it appears there are only two "main" roads which run parrarell to each other other. THe one that has Clark's Trading Post/Whales' Tale has this Wagon Wheel looking rresturant-Avoid at all costs. We stopped in for breakfast and got sour coffee creamer, a bug in my coffee and blah food. Plus the place was very dated and dirty looking.

There is a Rite Aid and Dunkin Donuts on the other road (sorry I can't remember the route numbers or road names), but I don't recall seeing a food market. There is a Shaw's and Walmart in North Conway right next to the outlets

Whale's Tale doesn't look like a big park and isn't cheap but everyone I speak to loves it. Avoid Water Country in Portsmouth at all cost. It's nowhere near Lincoln/North Conway but is still pretty popular.

I noticed that you were from South Jersey(so am I-Ocean City) When we visited New Hampshire for a few days last summer, we spent a day at the beach in Rye. I always like to check out other beaches and it was truly beautiful. It is a bit of a drive, but worth it. The beaches are FREE, hard and flat, not crowded and the ocean was suprisingly warm. While there, you could pick up some lobsters for a real New England meal.

Just wanted to chime in to check out Santa's Village if you can. We love SV!! Very shady, you can bring in food, very clean. If your kids are used to Disney, they may(might/might not) be disappointed w/ StoryLand.

Just a thought. We vacation in Ashland NH every summer & love it there.

Have a fantastic trip!

I second Santa's Village in Jefferson. My DD loved it. It is very clean, fun rides and not to expensive at $25 pp for ages 4 and over. It is probably less then an 1 hour from Lincoln and they have the same deal as Storyland where if you go and purchase your ticket for the last 3 hours of the day, then you get to go the next day for free.

I don't know much about the restaurants in Lincoln, but there are some good and inexpensive places to eat in the North Conway area. Banners has real good breakfast and a good deal for the money. We always go a couple times for their breakfast when we are up there.

Bea's Cafe in Conway has a good cheap breakfast menu.

Yesterday's in Jackson is our new favorite place for Breakfast. Huge pancakes, cheap and the food is excellent.

Moat Mountain is one of favorite places to eat. The BBQ is excellent and they make their own beer. The portion sizes are large so you will have leftovers to take back to your place if you have access to a microwave. http://moatmountain.com/

Clarks Trading Post is a cute place and the kids will love it. It is cheap, at $18 for adults and $ for 3-5 year olds.

Have fun!!!

I love my state...
I am not sure what route you are taking (if you post I can give hints for places along the way)

If your route takes you thru Manchester NH at the NH lung Assoc. office you can purcase a Fun pass www.breathenh.org. It is $25 but it is filled with coupons for buy one adult admission get a child for free (most places will allow you 15mth dd in for free) A trip to Storyland and Lost River pay for the pass...

Places that are favorites for my kids...
Polar Caves
Lost River
The Flume
Storyland
Santa's Village
Whales Tale
In Concord - The McCalife Shepard Planetarium

Food -
I second the Woodstock Inn - I went on Friday with Best Friend and our 5 kids - awesome!
Delaney's Hole in the Wall
Foxes (near Storyland)

Stop at a rest area on 93 there will be a ton of pamplets. Also at the center in Lincoln. Also check when you check in if they have any promotions at area things.

Please bring some warm clothes as the nights might get cooler.

Enjoy our beautiful state!

We love the White Mountains and it may be our second favorite vacation spot after WDW. We got engaged while a trip there, actually. :)

I second Elvio's - very good pizza.

If you get up to the North Conway area some cheaper faves are The Scarecrow (great for lunch and very cheap) and one of the biggest deals in my opinion is The Red Fox Pub in Jackson. On Sunday they have a jazz brunch for $7.99 (no sure of the cost for kids) and it's awesome...especially their French toast sticks!!

I second Elvio's - very good pizza.

Elvio's has excellent pizza. ::yes::

You're picking a great week. School will be back in session in most of new england so the crowds will be way down.

All the places PP have mentioned are really great.

Food for thought. Another really popular location in the White Mountains is Mt. Washington, especially if the day is clear. My kids love the Mt. Washington Cog Railway. Not the cheapest way up, but in the end much, much cheaper than driving Mt. Washington - why? do you ask... because every time DH has driven my car up that mountain (3 times) I've had to replace my brakes w/in one month. Plus since your children are young they can ride in your laps. If you do go up Mt. Washington make sure to take a jacket/hoodie up with you. It will be cold. My kids wore jackets at the top on July 4th. We hiked partway up on memorial day one year and there was still snow on the slopes.

Another great scenic trip that's not very expensive - the Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway. here's a link to a pamphlet the rates are a year out of date but they'll give you an idea. It's a great way to get some fantastic scenic photos.

we are going to White Mountains Sept 24-27. currently have ressies at No. Conway comfort Inn but with AAA is stil almost $700  We do have a suite reserved, my husband wants the extra space. Does anyones know of a way to stay cheaper? (but still with 2 bedrooms) I know all about doing Disney cheap, but that's it. Not sure if there is a website I should be checking out? We are open to where we stay, we are doing storyland and santa's village while we are there. thanks for any tips!! :goodvibes

wow, we got the Comfort Inn for 80-ish a night. Must be because of fall foliage. It is very clean and hospitable

You could try the Seasons at Attitash. It's a condo place about 15 minutes from North Conway and about 6 minutes from Storyland. I stayed there last February and it was great. Added bonus- it has a kitchen so could save $$ on food. A quick check on their website and it looks like you could stay in a 2 bedroom condo for $390 with the 3rd night package special that they run. All the condos are decorated differently but there are pictures on the site. I've also stayed at the comfort inn and found it clean and comfortable as well, but will definitely stay at the seasons again because there is more room.

My parents live about ten minutes from North Conway and we love to visit. Storyland is great for the younger kids. My son also loved the alpine slide at Attitash. The outlets are definitely still there with NO TAX! As far as food goes we love The Flatbread Pizza Company located at the Eastern Slope Inn and May Kelly's in North Conway. If you need some fancy outfits for the kids Christmas pictures go to The Wooden Soldier outlet that is halfway between North Conway and Storyland. Another vote for Santa's Village as well. Both SL and SV are very clean well run parks that remind me of my youth. The scenery is spectacular. My in-laws live in Barnegat at the Jersey Shore and while my kids love it there too, I think they would pick the White Mountains first. You can also canoe the Saco river as well in Fryeburg, Maine. They have a big fair in Fryeburg in the fall, although I don't know which weekend.
Have a great trip.

I havent read through all the posts, but I have been going to Franconia Notch, about 10 minutes from Lincoln for 38 years (and I'm 38! :-)

Right in your area, there is so much to do. First, I would skip North Conway at this point. It is about an hour's drive, but for your little bit of time, I would just concentrate on the area you are...

Check out: Clarke's Trading Post, Takethe tram to the top of Cannon, Whale's Tale Water Park is great (and if it is going to be hot, thats a bonus..it will be empty since school is in!)..There is mini golf at the Hobo Railroad (the Hobo railroad is okay...Really just a train ride..nothing spectacular)..There is Loon Mountain right there. So much to do in that area!

If you did want to take a ride to the NOrth Conway area, there is Storyland right outside of it, which is great for little ones...

Have a blast!

wow, thanks merrily, that looks great! I am going to call them tomorrow, just have a few questions, but most likey we are switching and saving almost $300!! thanks so much!! :goodvibes

TRIP REPORT

We just got back this afternoon. We were debating about staying an extra night, but with the threat of Hurricane Earl, we chose to head back early. This was a GREAT budget family trip!

Hotel - We stayed at the InnSeasons South Mountain Resort in Lincoln, NH... only $72.00 per night (Expedia)!!! We had a room with 2 double beds. We checked in at 12:30 and had to wait an hour for the room to be ready. It was spacious and very clean. We added a refrigerator for an additional $10/night. They also have 1 and 2 bedroom suites. The hotel itself was beautiful and had an indoor and outdoor pool, game room, exercise room (not much equipment though), library. They offered daily activities like poolside BBQ, campfire, jewelry making, tennis camp for kids, and more. We took part in the all you can eat poolside BBQ. All you can eat burgers, hot dogs, potato and macaroni salad, watermelon, chips, and drinks. For a family of 4 it was $25, but kids 5 and under eat free and adults were $10 each, so our family of 4 was only $20... and boy did we eat! :lmao: I would absolutely stay at this hotel again, and I'm rating it a 5 out of 5!

Lincoln, NH - The town had so much available right there! We didn't take advantage of many of the attractions there though, but Franconia Notch State Park was only 10-15 minutes away. There were many shopping centers within walking distance. Not big suburban type shopping centers, but enough. There were convenience stores, deli's, pizza shops, a grocery store, Rite Aid, Dunkin Donuts, McDonald's, restaurants, ski and sports shops, book shops, and an inexpensive movie theatre. There was a visitor's center there, you could do the Moose Tour (3 hr bus tour, they were at 100% sightings), Hobo Railroad (train ride caters to kids), miniature golf, Clark's Trading Post, and so much more! The area is beautiful with mountain views everywhere.

Food - We got a refrigerator to save on food, though we did eat at a Steak and Seafood restaurant down the road from the hotel. Sun-Wed they have a 12 oz. sirloin steak with side, and all you can eat fresh bread and salad bar for $12.95. The kid's menu was also reasonable. We packed snacks, water, and juice from home, and because most of our excursions involved hiking, we made sandwiches and brought a cooler with goodies with us everywhere.

Day 1 - From South Jersey/Philly area we left at 5:30 am and arrived at 12:30, after a 20 minute stop and a little traffic in NYC (not bad though, we passed through before rush hour got started). We made it on one tank of gas. We checked in, unpacked, picked up a few things at the grocery store, and checked out the town. We stopped in the Clark's Trading Post gift shop and looked around, went to the visitors center, and headed back to the hotel. We changed for the poolside BBQ, and off we went. We got back to the room to relax and prepare for the next day.

Day 2 - We got up and got ready, we didn't rush. We had breakfast in the room (cereal, yogurt, bagels), packed snacks and sanwiches for lunch and headed to Polar Caves Park at about 10am. It was about a 30 minute drive, but so much fun! I had DS in a front carrier (recommended because of caves). They were a little difficult for DH to navigate, but if he can do it, anyone can. They have escape routes though, like "Chicken Run" and "Party Pooper's Lane". They also have smaller caves for the kids to explore and play in. There is a little animal park, with exotic birds, ducks that love to come up to you to eat (ds had a great time feeding them), deer. After all that fun you can go mining for gemstones and fossils. After that we had a picnic lunch there, they have a picnic area with tables. We were there for some time. DD really wanted to go to Santa's Village amusement park, so we went there after lunch. From Polar Caves Park, it took about an hour and 15 minutes. We got there at 3pm and they close at 5pm. However, if you arrive within 3 hours of closing you can go another day for free. It was a ghost town. We rode the log flume 7 times, 3 times with me and dd and 4 times with dd and dh. We did other rides including the roller coaster 4 times in a row. DD and I just stayed on. Usually the coaster only goes around twice, but they had it go around 3 times before loading/unloading and let anybody who wanted to ride again just stay on. We left at closing and drove the 45 minutes back to Lincoln, went to dinner at the Steak restaurant, and back to the hotel where dh and ds relaxed and me and dd went swimming! Yes, it was a long day, but was sooo much fun! We went at our own pace, were never rushed, and got to do what we wanted because there were no crowds anywhere. As for the drive, it's so beautiful, every route, is the scenic route so the long ride didn't seem long at all.

Day 3 - Same morning routine then off to Franconia Notch State Park. We did the Cannon Aerial Tram (Cool!!!). There's a free ski museum, and Old Man in the Mountain museum. At the top we hiked to the observation tower, a very easy hike. Ds was in the baby carrier, facing me. Beautiful views! We hiked back to the tram. Then when we got back we drove about 5 minutes through the park to Flume Gorge. My words can't describe it, it was unbelievable!!!! (google it). We had lunch in the car on our way back to Santa's Village. We got there at 4pm and almost didnt get in because the ticket booth closes an hour before closing. Luckily we caught someone. We did the Log Flume and roller coaster a zillion more times before the park closed. We headed back to the hotel and ds and I relaxed while dd and dh went swimming. When they got back we ordered a pizza and packed. We left the next day (today) at 5am, made a couple stops (dh wanted a pastrami sandwich from Harold's Deli in North Jersey), and we were home at 12:45p.

Great trip, saved on hotel, saved on food, only used 2.5 tanks of gas for entire trip, kids 5 and under are free for some attractions! You guys helped me find this great budget family trip, otherwise I would never have known.

Thanks again!!!

it sounds like you had a wonderful time and enjoyed the scenery as well as your family.:goodvibes

So glad that you had a great time. We haven't been up in about a year and I am really missing it and can't wait till we get to go again.

I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE the White Mtns. Nothing compares to it. We go every year and have stayed at Nordic Village the past few years and love it there (great for families - 1 & 2 bedroom condos, pools, game room, animals, playground, etc.)

I'm sorry, I had to LOL that you guys strolled over to Santa's village at 3-4:00. I am so anal about being at the parks before they open. This year we got delayed on the way to SV and ended up getting there right as they opened (there was already a line). I swear I almost had a panic attack b/c we weren't there 10 minutes earlier. :lmao: But I'm glad you have fun. I always try to push the White Mtsn. on people b/c there's so many differnet things to do there.
