Yes. DCL will offer a limited amount of free wifi for any purpose (email, web browsing, etc.) during embarkation day at PC, but starts charging you after that. However, the wifi connectivity for the app is completely free for the entirety of the cruise.
Yes, this is what our kids did. They have iPod Touch w/ wifi and LOVED using the App. Our kids don't have the first clue about "old school texting" (such as w/ the WavePhone), so this worked better for us.
Someone mentioned that club CMs will tell you that you need a WavePhone on you so the can reach you if needed. Unfortunately, no one ever reminded us of that and we were so enamored w/ the new App that it didn't even occur to us that the ONLY way we could be reached when our kids were in the clubs was if we'd also been carrying around the WavePhones! Fortunately, no incidents came up where we were needed but we felt like terrible parents for not realizing this :-( But we let the kids bring their iPods to the clubs, so they could text us anyway, and really a WavePhone call from a CM would've just bee "backup". Anyway, all this to say, PARENTS: If your kids don't have devices to text you w/ them while in the clubs AND IF you want to be reachable by CMs, then you STILL NEED to lug around a WavePhone.
They are pocket-sized for adult pockets. Might be just a little on the big side for 10-y.o. pockets. That having been said, they are smaller than most iOS/Android phones.
