I'm currently booked in a studio at the Animal Kingdom Villas Kidani for 6 nights in September (Saturday thru Friday). My friends are not arriving until Sunday at noon, so I have Saturday/Saturday night to myself.

My question is whether it's worth it to switch my first night of the trip to a monorail resort (right now Poly is available). I thought it would be fun to be able to go to both MK and EPCOT that afternoon/evening.

How much of a pain is it to check in and check out of resorts during a stay?

It's very simple. When it's time to switch resorts, simply take your bags to bell services. They will deliver them to the next resort and you can check in whenever your room is ready or anytime thereafter.

Make sure to call bell service when you get in to your room at the second resort, they won't automatically bring your bags up.

And make sure you physically check out of the first before you try to check into the second. It will cause problems with the second reservation.

If your plan for Sunday is to wait at AK for your friends to arrive you can take an Uber and your luggage to AK. If you have bell services transfer your luggage you won't see it before 4pm and there are restrictions regarding luggage and Disney transportation.
