Two quick cane questions

Hi all,

We just added a friend to our trip next month. After booking, she texted & asked if she could bring her cane - I told her no problem. I guess she is having trouble w/ sciatica in her hip? Not sure all of the details.

Will WDW give her any trouble bringing a cane into the parks? Onto the rides? She is only with us for a few days and may not need it at all.

Also, I seem to recall here that if she is having trouble walking the serpentine line distances, WDW's answer is to rent a wheelchair, correct? It is not a GAC matter? (I am aware of the large amount of walking necessary in the parks, just wondering if we can minimize it via shorter ride "routes.")

Canes are fine. Some people use a rollator. I think renting an ECV is the best solution, that is what I do and it makes it a better trip for the whole family

If she goes to GS she will likely be told to rent a wheelchair or an ECV. at rides with stairs she will not need a GAC because the Cms will see the cane and know she needs help. I have seen people take the cane on rides with them if it is a slow moving ride and I have seen the CMs take the cane after the person is in the ride car ( EE, BTMRR, SM).

With sciatica she may not want an ECV. I know when my sciatic nerve acts up I am very uncomfortable sitting at my desk all day and walking helps it much more than sitting.

You can share with your friend that if she wants to limit walking, an ECV is recommended. It can be parked and the guest walk some. But she may prefer to walk with the cane than sit and ride an ECV.

Thanks. I don't think we'll do an ECV, mostly for the $ factor. She's only there a few days, and we're all (otherwise) healthy youngish adults, so we could push her in a w/c if she is having difficulty walking.

I mostly wanted to make sure the cane wouldn't be an issue with security, or require her to sit stuff out. If they treat it like any other mobility aid and hang onto it during wilder rides we will be all set.

Cane is no problem but in crowded areas be sure to protect her so others do not knock the cane from under her. People are often not paying attention and accidently knock the cane away resulting in falls

Another thought about the cane....if she like to travel, a folding cane works great. I used it in Disney and it is safe but also folds up to about 12 inches to go in a ride pocket, backpack or hand held. It flips open in a second for when you get off the ride. At the local stores they run about 20 bucks

Beware the sudden opening of a folded cane, though...Mine nearly decapitated a fellow passenger when it suddenly came to life and escaped from my carry-on...
