Two One-Way Flights?

I probably should have posted before I did this but...

I booked two one-way fares on two different carriers in order to get the best price. I prefer to fly Song but only one of the days had the golden $49 fare available. On the return flight, I booked a one way with Southwest for $49.

My question is, did I set myself up for some unforseen problem? I understand I may be harassed a bit more by security because my flights are one way but I hope I didn't set myself up for some big problem.

Other than security, you shouldn't have any problems. I actually did it the last time we traveled and almost did it this time (didn't because Song prices for both legs of the trip were the ones I was looking for). Currently, with many airlines (esp. Song, Spirit, JetBlue, etc.) what you actually book is two one way tickets. This makes for a simpler pricing structure. The taxes and other neat charges they add to your fare are per trip, not per ticket.

My sister and niece flew one-way back to Nashville a couple of weeks ago to close up the house and get the last car and drive it down (we've just moved to Orlando) and they didn't have any security hassles at all.

We did this in February. We flew to Orlando on Southwest and returned on Spirit. We had no security issues at all. I was prepared for more screening, but it didn't happen.

You could make a printout of both the outgoing and return flights to show to security in case you are selected for additional screening. But there is still a non-trivial minimum amount of additional screening that will be done if you are selected.

If the actual fares for the two one way flights are less, then the taxes and fees will probably be less, compared with one round trip fare.

Taxes and fees are generally a combination of a percentage of the fare plus fixed increments depending on the airports you are flying out of or the number of connecting flight segments.

I just check a hypothetical r/t SWA vs. one way ticket to Orlando just to see and it actually cost .15 cents MORE to book a r/t ticket vs. 2 one way tickets so go figure
