One Disneyland store has an old name, but new merchandise. Another is selling sweets for the first time.
This week, Disneyland is opening two new stores before the start of the busy Memorial Day weekend Jewel of Orleans and Geppettos Sweet Shoppe, Disney announced Tuesday (today).
The Jewel of Orleans spot in New Orleans Square has been empty since early April when the previous tenant moved out. Diannes Estate Jewellery, a private business that sold fine jewelry at the shop for 12 years, decided to leave because of dwindling sales in the slow economy. See a previous story about Jewel of Orleans.
Starting Friday, the Jewel of Orleans will carry designer and trendy accessories, including jewelry by Tarina Tarantino and Classic Hardware. Handbags by Steve Madden, Dooney & Bourke and other designers also will be sold there. In Downtown Disney, Dooney & Bourke has sold a line of purses with Disney designs, including Mickey Mouse heads.
The store is keeping the Jewel of Orleans name. The location, where a perfumery was once operated, will retain some of its original decorations, overseen by Lillian Disney, Walts wife.
Nearby in Fantasyland, Geppettos Sweet Shoppe is set to open Wednesday near Pinocchios Daring Journey ride and the Village Haus restaurant, said Betsy Sanchez, a Disneyland Resort spokeswoman. The store will carry treats, including peanut brittle, toffee and other sweets. Previously, a toy shop ran in that location.
Both stores are owned and operated by Disney, Sanchez said.
