Two Germans Dine Deluxe Again ... (FINISHED!)

annichan: GORGEOUS pictures! How I miss Y&BC! I want to go back SO BAD! I loves staying there, it was like a dream come true. :wizard:

We really liked it there too - especially Stormalong Bay, the fact that Epcot was within walking distance, and the proximity to the Boardwalk for Kouzzina breakfast (haven't arrived there in my report yet, but from my table of contents one page 1 you can see that we went there quite a lot :)).

Still, we are pretty sure that for our next trip we will stay at Wilderness Lodge again. I don't know if it is because we spent our first WDW vacation there (and thus our honeymoon) - but the WL feels so much like home to us somehow. We went there for a day on this last trip, and it felt like coming home, we hardly wanted to leave and go back to the Epcot Resort Area anymore :rotfl2:.

Gorgeous photos!

Thank you! :flower3:

I was underwhelmed by Narcoossee's - it was good, but I just don't think it's worthy of it's signature status.

Can't wait to hear about your Yak n Yeti visit - it's one of my favorites! I love AK too - I think it's my favorite park.

I will try to put the Yak & Yeti review up later tonight! :yay:

I think you had a similar experience at Narcoossee's as we did, nice place, but just not that special unlike other Disney restaurants.

Tusker House is a great breakfast! I saw that sign about the animals as well and had a laugh about it! The whole area is just so well themed. :goodvibes

Yes, I think the whole of Africa is just so wonderfully themed. Love that land, love that park!

Hi! In the US tomatoes are best in late summer-August/Sept. Hothouse tomatoes, which I am going to venture a guess here, which Disney probably serves on their salads are not as good (obviously) as the tomatoes from my backyard. We have had salads at the Garden Grill and many of the vegetables served there are grown in The Land and the veggies are pretty good.

Sorry for the interruption, please carry on with your yummy reviews!

Not interrupting at all, any comments are always welcome! We never really considered the Garden Grill for a meal, but what you are saying makes a lot of sense. Maybe we should really eat there and have something with lots of veggies, they should be great if they come from The Land. (We did the Behind The Seeds Tour on this trip by the way, that was really interesting - I definitely recommend it for grown-ups, but think it might be a tad boring for kids).

Okay, I have to throw it out there...you write wonderfully, you love food, you provide great descriptions of meals in great detail, you work at a publishing house (not sure what type of books your company publishes), you love Disney...ever thought about writing a book about dining at Disney? I think you could provide a true food lover, foreign traveler perspective that people would want to read.

Just a thought....;)

 Wow! That's a really nice compliment! No, actually it's more like two or three great compliments all wrapped together. Thank you!

However, I think that a "real" food writer should know a lot more about food than I do, and maybe also live a bit closer to the restaurants she reviews so she's not limited to one meal every eighteen months or so. (How I wish I could go more often!). But apart from that ... I agree, it would be great fun! For now, though, all you get is this measly dining report so be ye content with it! :thumbsup2 :lmao:

Our lunch at Yak & Yeti had been one of the best meals we had during our last trip – little wonder, then, that we were hoping to repeat that wonderful experience today.

P1050197.jpg

Just like last time, we hardly had any wait at all and were escorted to our table pretty much straightaway. I was pleased that we were again led up the stairs – I really like their upstairs area, it seems quieter than downstairs to me, and I love the décor.
I would have loved to get a table by the window up there:

P1050212.jpg

I admit I did not ask for one though, so I am not complaining ;). And I was also happy with our table in the main room next to the stairs.

What I was less happy about, by the way, was the taste of the tap water here. I don't know why or how, but somehow this tasted a lot more chemical than at other places. Almost like drinking from a swimming pool (not that I do that on a regular basis, but anyway).

P1050205.jpg

I am aware that tap water in Florida tastes very much different from tap water in Germany, and it does seem to be more chlorinated. However, I still tasted a huge difference between Yak & Yeti and other Disney restaurants :confused3.

What was also different here than in all other Disney restaurants we have been to is that they place comment cards on the table, giving you a chance to comment on food quality, server friendliness and the like.

I am not sure what I think of this: On the one hand, it is certainly a good thing to be able to comment on your dining experience in order to give them a chance to improve their performance even further.
On the other hand, I don’t really like feeling that I am compelled to do paperwork while I am on holiday and only wanting to enjoy my meal. I know I could just have ignored the comment card, after all there was no pressure to fill it out – but then again, just by sitting there and wordlessly screaming “fill me out!!” it was exerting non-negligible amounts of pressure already. :lmao:

This was DH's appetizer (and I just love the table, by the way!):

P1050206.jpg

Thai Chili Chicken Wings - fried Chicken Wings tossed in a sweet Thai chili sauce with spicy Asian pickled Cucumbers.
This got a definite thumbs up from him. (I did not try them as I am not a fan of any chicken meat that is not the white breast … :sad2:)

If you have read my reviews this far, you may not have any difficulty guessing what I chose for my appetizer:

P1050207.jpg

The Seared Ahi Tuna - chilled, sesame-encrusted Ahi Tuna with Wasabi Aioli and sweet chili Slaw.
I love it! Or, as a German colloquial term for really nice food goes: I could lie down in it :).
Seriously, I would have this again in a heartbeat. The fresh crunchy coleslaw, the tender tuna, the wasabi soy sauce … Oh, to have that again right now :lovestruc. I can almost smell it!

DH stayed in the poultry-devouring department with his main course also:

P1050209.jpg

The Duck with Anandapur Glaze – a roasted half Duckling with orange Wasabi Glaze, Jasmine Rice and Stir-fried Vegetables.
He was very happy with his choice. (And I was happy with how often he was choosing something different from what I had, as that meant more photo opportunities for this dining report :)).

Incidentally, hile I was planning our ADRs for this trip, I had often thought about what I would actually order. (Am I the only one this pathetic, or are there others preplanning not only their restaurants but their entire meals six months in advance? :sad2:)
For the Yak & Yeti, I had been very much torn between the Shaoxing Steak and Shrimp which I had had and really enjoyed last trip, and the Kobe Beef Burger which sounded just heavenly.

As soon as I sat here and looked at the menu, though, these well-made plans all went out the window and plunged down a floor as I simply had to try this:

P1050208.jpg

The Malaysian Seafood Curry with Mahi Mahi, scallops, little neck clams, mussels, shrimp, zucchini, roma tomatoes, red curry coconut broth, and jasmine rice.
A wonderful choice! Tasty and plentiful, with lots of nice seafood. (The only remotely bad thing I can say about it is that I would have liked it even spicier, but I realize that they have to cater to a broad range of tastes and cannot be as adventurous as I would like them to be).

I actually asked our server (who was really nice and friendly – and I’m not just saying this due to comment card pressure!) to please tell the chef how much I loved this dish, and I’m not usually wont to pester the kitchen staff at the places I eat ;).
Anyway, she said that she would but it wouldn’t be the first time that day, so it seems this curry had already gained other fervent admirers.

Happy and quite full, we could theoretically have left a bit of room for dinner by skipping dessert, and ventured merrily back out into Animal Kingdom. Practically, however, this was out of the question here:

(Picture me leaning forward and looking you intently in the eye now as I am about to say something terribly meaningful: )
For us, the Yak & Yeti is home to the single best dessert the (Walt Disney) World has to offer. We have not found anything like it elsewhere on property.
Those of you who have read my previous dining report know what I mean, and I am sure many others do as well, as long as they have had a chance to try this:

P1050210.jpg

Fried Wontons: Skewers of fresh Pineapple and Cream Cheese Wontons with fresh strawberries, vanilla ice cream and honey vanilla drizzle.
Honestly, the person who came up with this combination has me eternally grateful. There is absolutely nothing that she or he could have done better. The fresh fruit, the restrained sweetness, the cool ice cream and the totally comfort-foody fried dough … Just wonderful.

So anyway, tearing myself back out of my dessert-induced love trance to deliver a brief summary:
This was another marvelous meal at Yak & Yeti, and the first restaurant on this trip that we left thinking we absolutely MUST return to for a third time.
Great décor, friendly staff, more adventurous food than in most other Disney restaurants (though we were to see even much better in this category at Sanaa later!) and the best dessert on property – in our opinion, this will always be worth another visit.
We just won’t drink the tap water here ever again ... but did I mention they have a few nice Asian beers on offer as well? ;)

Next: Dinner at Jiko without any pictures at all :scared1: ...

We really liked it there too - especially Stormalong Bay, the fact that Epcot was within walking distance, and the proximity to the Boardwalk for Kouzzina breakfast (haven't arrived there in my report yet, but from my table of contents one page 1 you can see that we went there quite a lot :)).

I have never eaten at Kouzzina, but I have heard excellent things about the breakfast there and definitely want to try it sometime! :thumbsup2

I understand what you mean about specific resorts feeling like "home" though. I feel that way about POFQ. :cloud9:

I totally agree with you, that Seafood Curry is amazing...I've had that on my last two visits to Yak n Yeti!

I noticed the funny water there too! :confused3

We had breakfast at Kouzzina no less than three times, though I admit that it was definitely also due to the fact that we were staying so close, at the Beach Club Villas. No matter where we end up staying next time though, we will want to fit in at least one breakfast at Kouzzina if possible!

Glad we're not the only ones who noticed that funny taste in the water there ...

This is most probably going to be the worst portion of my whole long dining report, and the one that will be the least fun to read: To my great dismay, my camera battery died on me the moment we walked into the Animal Kingdom Lodge lobby, when I could have sworn I would have at least a dozen pictures left.

Therefore, I could not take a single picture of our first ever dinner at Jiko, and since I did not take notes either (honestly meaning to write my dining report as soon as we got home), I am pretty helpless without the pictures and don't really remember much. I shall include this review in my report anyway, just to have a little something about every place we ate, but I will keep it brief.

I do have one picture, though, which I took a few days later when we had breakfast at Boma and I intrepidly sneaked (snuck? sneaked? Any grammar experts out there to help me out?) into the closed and empty restaurant to at least take a picture of the table we had been at:

P1050819.jpg

We didn't have the round booth in the foreground but the little table for two right behind it (from the camera's point of view).

Like I said, this was our first time at Jiko, and we were really looking forward to it. I must admit that from our previous brief visits, we were not very big fans of the Animal Kingdom Lodge (too loud and dark compared to our beloved WL ;)) nor of Boma (nice variety, but to great enough to warrant the trip out here, in our opinion).
This time, however, we were happy to give Animal Kingdom Lodge dining another try – or rather two, as we also had a Sanaa lunch ahead of us.

Anyway, we were brought to our table after a very brief wait (all in all, we had nothing but brief waits for our tables on this trip, which was a good thing) and were happy with the table location. Our server turned out to be wonderful – he was very friendly and chatty, made recommendations about the menu, and was just a very pleasant person.

We started the evening with our wine choice, which was also a recommendation from our server: A glass of Paul Cluver Pinot Noir for each of us – a beautiful fruity and aromatic wine which went very well with our main courses.

First came the appetizers, though: DH had a tomato salad which I cannot even find on the menu anymore, so I can't really say anything about it that is not hopeless guesswork. I am very sure that it contained heirloom tomatoes, though, as that was the first time we ever heard the term and we had our server explain to us what it meant.

I had the (or to be honest, DH and I shared the) Taste of Africa appetize, which we were told is the most popular appetizer here: a trio of dips with assorted breads (Naan, Pita and Lentil Pappadam), easily big enough a portion to share.
Beautifully presented too, but alas, I don’t have any pictures to share (Did I mention that before ...?:sad2:). I have to dine here again, if just to take some pictures! No, not just for that in fact – the whole dining experience was well worth returning. Which I cannot prove to you without photos. So go on, believe me already. ;)

For his main course, DH decided on the Braised Beef Short Rib with truffled potato puree, pearl onions, baby carrots, and Cabernet tamarind sauce. He absolutely loved it, while I shamefully admit I did not even try it, but that is because I neither like ribs (one of those wussie all-white-meat types, me) nor really braised meat.

Meanwhile, I had the Oak-grilled Filet Mignon with Roasted Fingerlings, Berbere Green Beans, and Red Wine Reduction. Now, dare I admit that I do not remember this dish? I know it cannot have been disappointing because I would certainly remember that then. Can't have been fantastic enough to clearly remember seven months later without the aid of a photo though, either. :confused3

My dessert was a bit more memorable, however:
I had the Tanzanian Chocolate, which was Chocolate Crémeux with Chocolate Crunch, Chocolate-Cherry Mascarpone, and Cocoa Nibs. Really rich, but so yummy that it made me forget all the calories at least until I got up to waddle home :thumbsup2.

DH, not entirely surprisingly, was at the same time tucking into his Amarula Crème Brulée with a Spiced Chocolate-layered bottom, and White Chocolate, Cranberry, and Pistachio Biscotti. Well, he left the biscotti as he did not much fancy that, so I got to clean it off :rolleyes1.

All in all, I really am afraid that I am not giving this restaurant the praise it may deserve – this was one sumptuous meal among so many, it is half a year back and this makes it quite hard to remember. I do think it deserves better, though, so I will endeavour a better review of it next time!

Coming up next: Breakfast at Kona Café.

Before I write that next review, however, I have one more little thing to take care off: An 11-day Mediterranean cruise on the Disney Magic! :yay::banana::cheer2:

So unless that §$%&?! volcanic ash cloud gets in our way (and please, please, PLEASE everybody keep your fingers crosses for us that it won't), we will be off to Barcelona on Friday, and board the ship on Saturday.
(And that means no more food reviews until after our cruise - sorry about that!)

Jiko is one of my favorites!

Have fun on the Med cruise! I did the 11 night last year and we had the darn volcano erupting a few days before (May 15 cruise). It was a fantastic experience. You will have a great time!!!

Jill in CO

P.S. It's "snuck." :)

Jiko sounds wonderful! I loved braised ribs so that sounds right up my alley. How did you like the bread service? I love Naan but I'm not sure about the other two.

I would love to hear how you like Kona, that is our first meal at Disney when we go in 11 days but it sounds like you won't be back until we actually leave. :)

Have a great time on your cruise!!

Mmm I love Jiko! Glad you liked it!

Have a great time on your cruise. Sending pixie dust to scare away the volcanic ash! :wizard:

The erupting volcano was a fantastic experience? Wow, I bet you're always bored on the thrill rides if this is what it takes to fascinate you :lmao:

No really, thank you, we are so much looking forward to the cruise - please, ash cloud, subside already so we will get there!

P.S. "snuck". Got it. Thank you. :flower3:;)

Jiko sounds fab I cant wait to try it, is on my must do soon list..lol

Yes, I do feel like I've neglected it a bit with this short review, will do better next time!

In all honesty, I don't really remember the breads much (which is in keeping with the sorry forgetful rest of this instalment :rolleyes1).

But I don't want to keep you in undue suspense about Kona as I definitely won't be doing my review of it until after you leave: We did like it! Andf if you are big eaters, you will probably love the Big Kahua breakfast! And if you love good coffee, by all means order a Kona press pot!

Have a great trip,
Annika

Thank you so much for the pixie dust, I still think we will definitely need it! :flower3::flower3:

Wow, I really messed up my English grammar. ;) The CRUISE was fantastic....worrying about the volcano not so much! :rotfl:

Thank you! I'm not a huge eater but I know my husband certainly can be. I'm really looking forward to the macadamia nut pancakes and the press pot! Glad to hear you liked it! I'll let you know how I felt about it when we get back. :) Have a great cruise!

I've been catching up on your reviews as we are just back from a wonderful vacation and Jiko was a real highlight
Great food and superb service
Looking forward to reading more of your reviews

Your dining review is great so far! Your writing is very entertaining :goodvibes

That curry at the Yak and Yeti looks amazing. For our upcoming honeymoon we decided that for dinner on our Animal Kingdom day we wanted to eat in DTD instead, since none of the restaurants really struck us. However, if I had seen your pictures before I had to make my reservations in March I may have just changed my mind! Next time... see, I have not even been on my upcoming trip and I am already planning for the next one ;)
