Two Cruise Lines Issue SARS-Related Ban

By ADRIAN SAINZ, Associated Press Writer

MIAMI - Two cruise lines are banning passengers who appear sick and have recently visited Toronto to try to prevent spread of a new respiratory disease, cruise company officials said Friday.

Carnival Cruise Lines and Royal Caribbean Cruises said they would send home anyone who had been in Toronto in the two weeks before their voyage and who had a fever above 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit or showed other symptoms of severe acute respiratory syndrome.

The cruise lines already had banned passengers who had recently traveled to China, Singapore, Hong Kong or Vietnam. Toronto was included after the World Health Organization this week added the city to a list of places travelers should avoid because they are hot spots for SARS.

The disease has infected 4,600 people and killed more than 270 since it was identified in Asia months ago. Most of the 18 deaths in Canada were in Toronto. No one in the United States has died.

Royal Caribbean kept six passengers off a cruise about two weeks ago because travelers in the two groups had been in Asia, company spokesman Michael Sheehan said.

Carnival spokeswoman Jennifer de la Cruz said she said she didn't know if anyone with Toronto ties has been denied boarding as of Friday.

Carnival and Royal Caribbean are offering full refunds or credits for future voyages for passengers they turn away, plus reimbursement of any air travel costs. Carnival is the world's No. 1 cruise operator, followed by Royal Caribbean.

Cruise lines late last year had to take precautions to handle about 1,500 passenger illnesses caused by the Norwalk virus. Some ships were removed from service and voyages canceled so the ships could be thoroughly cleaned.

Norwalk-like viruses cause diarrhea, stomach pain and vomiting for up to 48 hours.

Here here! God for everyone - even the agnostics...

Hear, hear: Or did you intend to say "there, there"? :p

Actually it looks like DCL is taking this very seriously too folks. Posted today on CNN.COM -
MIAMI, Florida (CNN) -- At least four major cruise lines are asking passengers who have recently been to Toronto to be medically screened before boarding as a way to head off severe acute respiratory syndrome, or SARS.

Royal Caribbean Cruises, Carnival Cruise Lines, Disney Cruise Line and Princess Cruises already had denied boarding to anyone who has been in or traveled through mainland China, Hong Kong, Singapore or Vietnam because of the disease.

Disney is asking any passengers coming from Toronto to meet with the ship's nurse before boarding, said spokesman Mark Jaronski.

"We talk to them as they check in," he said. The nurse will then ask them questions about their travel to the Canadian city.

Entire Story HERE

That is not a very high fever. Infact with an ear thermometer up to 100.8 is considered in the normal range. What if someone generally runs a higher temp? I send DS to school unless with the ear therm he is over 101 (unless he is complaining of other symptoms)
What about the people who have not been to Asia or Toronto but were on a plane with someone that was.
Of coure if this got onto a ship it would be MUCH worse than the norwalk virus ever could have been imagined. Yikes...

Crystal Cruise Line is the industry's first to "deny" boarding anyone from the affected areas and not just if the passengers is suspected of SARS. This way, it mitigates the potential risk of any passengers who are incumbating the virus and not displaying any symptoms getting onboard and then developed the symptoms.

This is a very serious disease. I can't believe why there are people out there who says that "flu"/car accidents kills more people than SARS and there's nothing scary about SARS. Even if one person dies from SARS, it's serious! How would anyone feel if they were that person?
