Tween boy hygiene question

...anything but Axe. Every boy that comes into this house (I have two girls) absolutely reeks...

:thumbsup2:laughing:

My DS12, when he uses it, has Axe. It's not that strong as a body wash, I hope he never wants to wear that spray that some kids spray all over themselves. I won't be able to be near him if he does!

I don't have a boy but after sniffing some of the boys hanging around my daughter, I'd say to avoid Axe. That stuff is just nasty!

DS15 uses the Axe stuff. But after growing up with a brother that would swim in Drakkar cologne, he was told that while he could use the Axe spray, but it had to be in moderation. If I smell ya, before I see ya, you used to much. For the longest time, he would bring the spray out to DH and have him spray it on the boy. That way if DH got carried away, he got yelled at, not the boy.

I got DS12 some of the Gillette body wash with the grains b/c he has acne issues; it smells like balsam. The anti-perspirant he uses is the Speed Stick clinical; only because he has a tendency to forget to use it, and that stuff lasts.

He had HORRIBLY oily hair, and we tried all sorts of expensive things, only to find out that the best solution was to go cheap. You want a shampoo with a lot of detergent that will cut that oil. The best I've found is the Alberto Kiwi-Lime; it's all of $.87 a bottle at my supermarket, and his hair looks much better since he has been using it. (And since he puts it on with a trowel, I'm not going broke buying it, either.)

PS: I saw this in the store yesterday and just about died laughing at the name:

"Dial for men magnetic attraction enhancing body wash" -- you've got to be kidding me. The tragedy is, some poor kids out there will fall for the hype, and we parents will have to live with the consequences, LOL.

Gotta be honest- I hate Axe. Boys that I went to High School and College with thought that it made them irresistable. It made me want to vomit .

OP- your son probably picked Axe because it is "cool" and the commercials for it are very enticing to young men.

OP- I think it's best to just let him pick out whatever. If he wants to buy into the "manly" products, I'd let him, as long as you weren't dropping $10 for a bottle of shampoo! If he wants just simple, generic like products, I'd recommend DH's choices- he smells good AND is clean! :)

 ERG, "goat boys." I remember when DS23 went through his Axe stage--almost drove us outta the house. He really thought he was the bees knees. Can't say it drove the girls wild, though.:goodvibes

DS14 uses Old Spice body wash and deodorant. I can't remember which kind, there are a couple different scents. It's not the traditional scent. When boys hit this musky stage it's just about unbearable. Christian can walk around in the back yard for 15 minutes and he just smells baaaaaddd.

I have to agree with the comments of "you got you boy in the shower?" more power to ya!!!

My stepson I have to share this as it is so dang funny...I was in the laundry room and came out to the living room and smelled something very strong. I asked who just sprayed something b/c homey you put WAY too much on. Step son looks at me and it was me and mom said if I smell like crap one more time she will take my xbox!!! :lmao::lmao::lmao:

I about died laughing..:rotfl2:

My son seems to just not care! don;t know what I'm going to do with that boy!
but to answer your question all my boys use axe and they love it. Why i don;t know :confused3:confused3

Axe is just nasty! Have you ever smelled a mix of old stinky hockey gear and Axe? :crazy2::faint:

Someone once claimed to me that the orange colored stuff with the dragonfruit smells like the oranges from Soarin. Um, yeah. NO! It stinks. I could hardly stand to be with myself after I used it once. :headache:

My little bro really likes the dial for men soap and uses Selsun Blue I believe. I think he also uses the Toms of Maine deodorant, but honestly, it doesn't work that well...

Axe is really hit or miss. They make some stuff that is truly horrible, but they do make some that are okay. The same goes for the Old Spice, as well.

I'm all grown up, now (at least age-wise :rotfl: ), and I've found some Axe and some Old Spice that I liked, and didn't seem to offend at the same time.

I agree with the PP that said let him pick what he wants. They all do the same thing, they just smell different.

My kids use regular old soap (Dial, Zest, Safeguard) and water. They both use Axe Kilo deodorant but don't overdo it so I actually like the scent. i

I always hated Axe, but my kiddo wanted to use the Kilo and I actually like that one. He doesn't over do it, and unless I get right up to him I can't smell it at all.

I'm just impressed your tweens are trying to smell good! Here is a conversation I had with my tween once...

Me: "Honey, I'm saying this with all the love in my heart. You stink. Go take a shower and wash your hair!"

AFTER SHOWER

Me: "Your hair is still greasy. Did you take a shower?"
Tween: "Yes."
Me: "Did you wash your hair?"
Tween: "Yes."
Me: "Did you use shampoo?"
Tween: "You didn't tell me to use shampoo!"

Yep, that's how hygiene and my tween boy get along!:scared1:

Reminds me of a Bill Cosby routine where he had to tell his children, in detail, what to do after dinner. Part of that included telling them to get into the shower, and "turn on the water." He said if he didn't tell them that, they'd just wander around the tub for a few minutes. :lmao:

DS15 finds Bill Cosby Himself hysterically funny. First time he saw it, he looked at DH and I and said that sounds just like you - listing off do A, then B, making sure to use C - we just looked at him and said how do you think we knew it was going to happen. We have Brain Dead childern!!

Sounds like I need to watch some therapeutic Bill Cosby!

If you watch it, do not attempt to drink while you are. You will either end up spitting it all over while you are laughing or choke on it while laughing.

The words Mine, I Don't Know, and Stop Touching Me, will forever take on a new meaning when you hear your kids utter these words.

Get him a shampoo that is a 'clarifying' type and a weightless conditioner. Those will help to keep his hair clean longer or just skip the conditioner and use the clarifying shampoo. Scentless deodorant is also good. My son uses a dove face wash and uses a scentless moisturizer on his cheeks because although the rest of his skin is oily, his cheeks are dry. I think cosmetics without scent are the best as they irritate the skin less and do not mix smells. Nothing worse that that Axe scent. It simply gags me and we have some schools that are outlawing it here too. Seems very few people like it.

My oldest DS - just tuned 14 Saturday - is a swimmer... He is in the pool 15 hours a week during the school year, and 30 plus hours a week during the summer...

So, the ONLY shampoo that we have found that will completely get rid of the chlorine smell is Paul Mitchell Three shampoo. He uses that daily and a couple days a week, he uses a conditioner from Suave.

The deoderant we both use is Degree Ultra Dry. Smells pretty decent and works well.

My DH uses Pert Plus shampoo, which just smells clean. He uses whatever type of manly scented soap I'll buy him (currently it's Vaseline for Men), and Speed Stick. I'm so sensitive to fragrances that he wears no scented stuff, thank goodness. While our school hasn't "banned" body sprays, I do ask my students not to put them on in school. The scent wears off some from home to school, but when they spray it in PE or in the hallway, I honestly can't breathe. (I say the same thing to my girls about perfume/body sprays, because some of those are just as bad!) I think I'd almost rather smell BO than Axe.

I agree about the Paul Mitchell Three; it's good stuff. When DS is swimming in summer he does use it, but the daily chlorine is a blessing for him, because that is the only time of year when his head doesn't smell like a 3-days-dead possum. Believe me, the chlorine is much preferable to the grease funk of an overly-hormonal sweaty head. It's literally gamey, sweat mixed with an undertone of that sickly-sweet smell that you associate with rotting meat.

 I'd say that pretty accurately sums up the teenage boy smell.

DH has been using Dove bodywash for men. I like it, it's not flowery or strong smelling. He did say that when this bottle runs out he'll try Old Spice so he can be 'the man your man should smell like' since those Old Spice commercials make me giggle. :3dglasses
