'Twas the Week Before Christmas... Done & where to find us next!

Thanks for the great update V! Job well done!

We've never been to Disney when all the Christmas decorations were up. Plus I missed a lot of them in our city this year since I didn't leave the house much in December with my recovery. Seeing your pictures really brings me that Christmassy feeling! Even though it's 72 degrees here in VA here today. :rotfl:

I love the pictures though! Great job with those too! Can't wait to read the rest of your report. But don't end it too soon. Don't want to see you disappear too quickly. LOL!

Another wonderful update, V! :goodvibes

Honestly, I wish I could bottle that feeling you get after a "perfect" day in WDW. :cloud9:

I love the Osborne lights as well! If possible, I like to get there right at 6 and watch them turn the lights on. It always takes my breath away and gets me all misty-eyed!

Awesome artistic shots, V! In film we call that wrack focus...what is it called in the photo world? (focused in front, blurred in back then reversed...in film) Sounds like you have not had the best of luck in my ABSOLUTEFAVORITEEVER Disney Park. No kidding. I would live there if I could. And visit Epcot often. Leo is a gorgeous kid and what an adorable baby!!!

Never seen the lights and due to my teaching schedule, not sure I ever will...until retirement or career change :rotfl:

Hi Ash!! *Oh boy is that caramel/marshmallow swirl BANGIN'...AND the caramel chocolate covered marshmallows?!?! Mmmm....... I say!! Mmmm...only we live too far away to bag them up and store them in the fridge :( Those huge cupcakes in there looked A MAZE ING to me too!! (I think I just gained the 5 pounds I lost in the last couple weeks from just TYPING that sinful yummy goodness...)

Love your TR, V!! Thanks for taking us along on your Christmas trip!:dance3:

Another great update V....I'm glad you had such a perfect day.

I've never done mini-golf at WDW or seen the Osborne Lights....maybe someday!

WHAT??!! What do you mean "CONTINUE: SAVE"?? You can't do that to me!! Ugh!:eek:
:rotfl2: See? And that's why I had to do it! ;)
Ok this last one has me soooo giddy, I can't freakin' wait! I can't wait to have dinner at BD and I can't wait to drink a "real" martini (I'm so with you on that one!) and I can't WAIT to see the lights!! Oh those beautiful lights!!
:thumbsup2

Me too, me too! :hug:

Can I ask what type of camera the good camera is? Such lovely pictures! :thumbsup2
Thank you! I use a Canon Digital Rebel XT, but I don't use the standard ens it comes with and I think that makes all the difference; a good lens is key to clean, clear shots. My "all purpose" lens (which I used this trip) is a middle of the road Sigma, I think 18-125mm. I like that I can range from very close-up (not quite macro, though) to pretty well zoomed-in to a decent wide angle without needing to change lenses. :thumbsup2

:rotfl: That's cool, though - I'm glad I was able to bring Xmas a couple months after the fact!

Thank you! :goodvibes I'll actually have a helluva report coming not too long after this... but it won't be Disney, so I'm not sure what to do with it. I'll keep you posted, though! :thumbsup2

Ah, wouldn't that be great?! :goodvibes

Y'know, we used to do that and stopped last year; it's just gotten so crowded, it's uncomfortable now and Leo can't see a thing. I miss it, but we do better overall with waiting a bit after they flip the switch and things thin out a little.

Awesome artistic shots, V! In film we call that wrack focus...what is it called in the photo world? (focused in front, blurred in back then reversed...in film)
Thank you! Can't say I've ever heard that term; I generally refer to it as a shallow depth of field. It's my favorite photographic tool! :love:

:rotfl: Yeah, I won't lie - we're not big HS fans. But I think that's mostly due to the fact that Leo doesn't like much there; I'm hopeful that he'll someday accompany me on TOT and RNR and we'll spend more time there!
Leo is a gorgeous kid and what an adorable baby!!!
Thank you! :goodvibes

Thanks glennbo! Oh yes, you MUST try to fit those in in the future - you won't be disappointed, I promise!

Thank you for posting such a great review of Osborne lights! We will be going in December and dh had thought he wanted to skip them...he thought it would not be very neat. Thanks to your review (that I read aloud to him) he is now thinking it might be worth seeing. :goodvibes

Although I am a HUGE HUGE HUGE fan of both TOT (my Maelstrom friends like to chant "drop us again...and carry yellow flags as we make our way up to the elevators, just like the Brazilian tour groups and we almost always are able to gain special access to the 13 floor and almost always make wonderful friends with the incredible CM's at TOT...) and RNRC(rode 5 times with same said friends in 2008. Found out three days later my last baby was along for the ride!!) I must admit, I just love love love the ambiance of DHS (RIP MGM!! good one!! DHS is a human services organization, dagummit!) and am a huge fan of the Movies. All movies. And wish I were in a few myself!! :rotfl: and TOT at night!?!?!?!?!?

A MUST. A bucket list MUST for everyone!!!

I can't believe Disfan hasn't tried out for the American Idol show at DHS yet.....she's a performer alright ;) Our most recent meet was great...Grand Floridian Club Level didn't hurt!!! Unfortunately, I was sick in bed for the last couple of days (and for about a week later at home....) I'm just glad that MOST of my "roomies" (several of us had connecting rooms) didn't catch it.

V, I loved the report and all the photos from Osborne Lights. What adorable pictures of you and Leo over the years!! I have yet to see the lights. One of these days....Just seems that time of year is so crazy for me that getting away always seems out of the question. But I WILL do it eventually. They look awesome.

Sorry to see this trip winding down. But I somehow feel you'll have more to report on soon?....:rolleyes1

I love that you were able to have another great, relaxing Disney day. Those are the best! The photos your mom took of you and Leo are really, really great. There's something about that bond between a mom and her son I tell ya. Great Osborne pictures too V! :)

Thank you for posting such a great review of Osborne lights!
My pleasure!

NOOOOOOO!!!! They are beyond cool - it's a must, for sure!

PHEW! :faint: My work here is complete. :)

:lmao: I can TOTALLY picture this!
... and TOT at night!?!?!?!?!?

A MUST. A bucket list MUST for everyone!!!
:thumbsup2 I couldn't agree more!

Niiiiice! :thumbsup2 Well, except for the sick part; that's never nice at Disney. :sad1: Hope you recovered quickly!
I have yet to see the lights. One of these days....Just seems that time of year is so crazy for me that getting away always seems out of the question.
You know, I seriously doubt that I'd ever vacation at WDW in Dec. if I didn't live nearby because I'm generally in the same boat; there's just way too much going on at that time of year to get away. It's actually pretty rare that we take more than a few nights in Dec. for that reason. But if you can manage it, do - you won't regret it! :wizard:
Sorry to see this trip winding down. But I somehow feel you'll have more to report on soon?....:rolleyes1
Maybe! Well, yes, for sure. I'm just having a hard time figuring out the mechanics of it. Doesn't that sound cryptic, lol?! I'll have more on that in my next update. :thumbsup2

I love that you were able to have another great, relaxing Disney day. Those are the best!
Me too! So very true - and boy, could I go for one right now! :cloud9:

Hey V!

AWESOME job on the photos!

I am LOVING the good camera!

One of these days I HAVE to make it to Osborne Family Lights. That just looks SO amazing. I can't imagine seeing it in person!

Thanks for posting!

Hope all is well for you and Leo!

Hi GB! :wave: Thanks so much - that means a lot coming from another photog. :goodvibes We're muddling through here; some days are better than others, but we're moving forward, so that's good, right?! Hope things are settling down for the Biscuit clan, too. :grouphug:

You read that right. Magic Kingdom. Packed. Fun.

I know – it’s crazy, right?! And not just a little crazy. We’re talking full-on, Charlie Sheen kinda crazy.

And yet…

So very, very true!

If you’ll recall, we’d spent our final night in the amazing Reunion condo, which brings us now to departure day. My original plan for departure day was simply to… depart. Departure day fell on Dec. 22, a mere three days before Christmas and had an estimated crowd of 10, per Touringplans.com. Knowing my family’s low tolerance for crowded conditions, I thought it best to avoid any parks that day and just make it a slow-moving, get-back-home-when-we-feel-like-it kind of day.

But somewhere along the way – and definitely before arriving in Central Florida; this wasn’t a last-minute decision – I had the thought: “We’ve avoided crowded days for eons. I wonder what it’s like? What if we were to skip all the really popular, long-lined attractions and plan a late arrival followed by a few ‘D-List’ activities?”

With that in mind, I quickly ruled out three prospective parks:

Animal Kingdom: a “no-go” according to Touringplans, thanks to Extra Magic Hours.

Hollywood Studios: we have a hard enough time finding things we like to do there without crazy crowds.

Epcot: an excellent option thanks to its sheer size and ability to disperse crowds… but we’d already have had a lot of Epcot by then.

And there it was, staring me in the face: the Magic Kingdom (MK). Packed to the gills, days before one of its busiest days of the year. Just to verify that I was completely off my rocker in considering such an insane quest, I ran a Ridemax plan for the day, with an arrival time of 11am…

BAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

… a departure time of 3:00pm…

BAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

… and lunch at 11:45am, at Cosmic Ray’s.

BAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!

And then, the craziest thing of all happened… Ridemax kicked out a rockin’ plan that involved a grand total of 40 minutes waiting in line.

40 minutes of waiting in line. On a 10 day. :worship:

I ran the idea by the troops, and we all said “What the heck!”

And that’s how we came to be packing up our belongings, locking up the rental condo and driving back to WDW for one more park day.

When we arrived at the MK entrance, I was pleasantly surprised to find lots of people, but all moving in controlled directions; despite seeing a virtual sea of people ahead on Main St., there was none of the milling around, map searching, clogging up the pedestrian arteries crowd conditions to which I’ve become accustomed on summer trips. Rather, people were moving in orderly fashion, with purpose, and along clearly delineated routes, marked on the pavement by masking tape aisles and arrows. Also, Cast Members (CMs). Tons of them. Kindly and helpfully shifting traffic and keeping the folks wanting to get in moving forward, keeping the folks trying to leave moving, and protecting a space within which those who wanted to stand and look at things actually could without being beaten down with a stroller like a battering ram.

I was impressed. In my 20 years of regular WDW-going, never have I seen anything like it. And I’d see lots more before the day was done.

Ridemax said our first stop should be the Peoplemover, so that’s where we headed. Ridemax also said to expect a one-minute wait to ride. I assumed Ridemax wasn’t set up to produce a zero-minute wait, and so one minute was the minimum it could spit out. That may or may not be so, but there was, in fact, an actual, real, live LINE to get on the Peoplemover. :eek: As in, walk through a couple turns in a rope corral before hopping on the upward-moving conveyor belt. Yeah, I’ve never seen that before! But Ridemax was correct; within a minute or so, we were cruising around the galaxy, looking for Mr. Morrow. Mr. Tom Morrow. (Never gets old, does it?!)

5285919499_a578b96b79.jpg

Up next was lunch. Why I thought Cosmic Ray’s was such a great idea on a terribly busy day, I’ll never know. But it sounded good for some reason, and that’s where we went. Yes, it was every bit as congested and busy as you’d expect on a 10 day… but I have to tip my hat to the CM’s again; they were everywhere, pointing newcomers toward lines, offering menu cards to read in line, ensuring that open tables stayed open until people had food, and restocking the condiment bars at a near-constant pace. Every single order window and register was open, and we quickly made it through line and received our food with lightning speed. The weather was so nice, we opted for a patio table, which we located with a little assistance from a kind CM who held the door open for us. In general, the guests there, too, were orderly and well-behaved, standing in line nicely to obtain utensils, condiments and toppings…

… except for the Fork Nazi. She wasn’t nice, at all.

I took one for the team and volunteered to get utensils, napkins and condiments for the table. There was, of course, a line at the left side of the bar, from which people were making their ways down the bar, toward the right, gathering whatever items they needed along the way. I was pleased to see that it wasn’t a free-for-all in which every person pushed his way in, grabbing things. So, the gentleman ahead of me and I struck up a little conversation while waiting and the general air was one of patience and understanding of the crowded conditions.

And then she came long; the Fork Nazi. She initially tried to push past me, saying “I just need forks,” in much the same manner as a certain dictator might have said, “I just need this little Baltic nation here.” And, much like Western Europe, I gave her the benefit of the doubt. I thought maybe she didn’t realize there were several more folks in front of me waiting, for whom I did not feel I could give approval for her hijack. So, I kindly, with a smile even, said, “Oh, we’re actually in a line, though it’s a little rough around the edges! I think these folks ahead of me are waiting for utensils, too.”

Fork Nazi did not like that one bit. I know, because she proceeded to complain about me for the next two minutes. Out loud. To no one in particular.

But she stood in line, like the rest of us. Until she saw a gentleman two ahead of me get him some forks… and KETCHUP! The horror. Fork Nazi spat out, “He’s getting more than just forks! I want my forks!” And with that, she shoved the couple of us ahead of her out of her way, grabbed a handful of forks, and, brandishing her war trophies ahead of her like bayonets, she pushed her way back through the rest of the line, complaining about how “rude” everyone at Disney is.

:lmao:

I’d like to point out at this time that the rest of us in line, we had a stunned moment of silence as we just looked at one another, and then we collectively busted a gut laughing out loud. And THAT was the kind of atmosphere I experienced at the MK on a 10 day; not a herd of Fork Nazi’s, but thousands and thousands of kind-hearted folks who chose not to freak out about long lines and bumper-to-bumper walkways and, instead, made the best of the situation and focused on what was important – valuable time spent in the company of family and friends in the Happiest Place on Earth. :goodvibes

With lunch concluded, we returned to our Ridemax-approved plan and took a spin in the Carousel of Progress. We all still enjoy the Carousel, but don’t you think it’s time to update that last scene? That poor family is all sorts of happy thinking they have the latest technological marvels… from the 1980s. How hard would it be to give Grandma a Wii instead of that antiquated video game? Throw some 21st century ski boots to Patricia already. And for goodness sake, lose the Bill Cosby sweater, Dad. :rolleyes:

After that, we worked our way through Fantasyland, over to the Liberty Belle riverboat, which was just getting ready to depart. Perfect timing! We haven’t been on the riverboat since Leo was a baby, so it was essentially a “first” for him. He really dug the trip, running from side to side to see everything along the banks of the river…

5286533206_d2b6fb6908.jpg

We were also able to see this from the boat:

5285928495_71822e0b49.jpg

Note the line under the awning for Haunted Mansion. That was only HALF of it. The rest snaked down a narrow walkway that went down by the river, between the riverboat launch and the far end of the Mansion, and back again. Wowsa.

Next on our D-List of MK attractions was the Hall of Presidents. Now, I should clarify this “D-List” thing – I am NOT referring to any of our chosen attractions for that day as being inferior or unloved. However, I think we can agree, there are some attractions in the MK that tend toward shorter lines, hold lots of bodies at once and are, in general, less populated, even on a very busy day. While I happen to like the Hall of Presidents a LOT, it’s still not a must-see on every trip we take. But since the theme that day was “small lines, less standing”, the Hall was a good choice. It was also Gramma’s first time seeing it since President Obama was added, so that was an extra bonus. (She agrees with me that he looks stiff. Okay, stiff-er. ;) ) Leo’s not a big Hall fan, but he suffered through it without too much complaint.

Finally, our last mission of the MK day involved some time at Tom Sawyer Island. We love the Island; it’s just so nice to walk at a good pace, run a little if you like, explore and not be corralled into a line. On that especially crowded day, it was an even nicer reprieve than usual.

5285937215_f321bbe8ee.jpg

After doing our best imitations of Tom, Huck and Becky, we wound up catching the Christmas Parade. That wasn’t on our plan, but we got trapped near the bridge from Liberty Square to the hub as the parade was starting up there. We wound up with a decent view of everything from the Sleepy Hollow terrace, which was kind of a nice surprise!

And with that, we were done with our MK day. I still can’t get over how insanely crowded the place was, yet how easy it felt to get through. No question about it, there were some distinct differences at play during this Dec. high-crowd level trip compared to previous mid-summer, high-crowd level trips:

1. Disney was all over crowd control. Between tape-marked directional paths on the sidewalks, CM’s guiding through traffic and every ride running at full capacity, they managed to make a very congested place feel much less so.

2. Knowing what we were likely in for, and choosing to skip the headliner attractions because of it, kept our stress levels low and our fun levels high.

3. The overall attitude of the crowd was vastly different than what I’ve seen in summer; Fork Nazi excepted, it truly felt as though we were all in the same boat and working hard to make sure we ALL had a good time.

It really was a superb way to finish the trip, and it was a little tough to exit the MK. But we were getting tired and we still had a little time left for dinner and sightseeing. With a reservation at the Grand Floridian Café waiting, we boarded a monorail to the grande dame herself, stepping out at the Grand Floridian stop.

If you haven’t experienced the Grand during holiday season, you really must; she’s amazing! It’s not my preferred decorating style for my own home, but I’m amazed year after year by what the Disney folks can do. I had fun with the camera while we walked around and made our way down to the gingerbread house.

We bought a few gingerbread treats, which, I’m sorry to say, had a serious lack of yumminess. I baked my own gingerbread cookies for the holidays and they were far superior. Which says a lot, considering that I’ve baked approximately eight times in my entire life.

We had dinner at the Café, which was its usual adequateness. The GF Café gets an A from me for consistency; it’s never been stellar, but it’s never been awful, either. I get the same thing every time: a salad and bowl of French onion soup. Both are good every time. I’m afraid to mess with that track record. I can’t begin to guess what Gramma or Leo ate because I was fading fast; I was absolutely overcome by exhaustion and could not wait to get into the car and sleep all the way home while Gramma drove.

And that’s just what I did; Leo, too. We both wound up sick a few days later, so I’m guessing our bodies were trying valiantly to fight the germs at that time.

I know I’ve already expressed this clearly, but if you’ll allow, I’ll say it one more time: this trip was among the BEST ever for me! Everything just seemed to fall into place nicely, I never felt rushed or stressed and I came back, though with a cold, feeling refreshed and like I’d had a… VACATION! Imagine that. ;)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
And now is the part where I’ve historically foretold about our next big Disney trip.
But.
There isn’t one about which to tell. At least, not within the next six months. We’ve been back for a few day trips already, and chances are we’ll have some more of those to come. And we do have a big trip planned for next December. But that’s a long way off and nowhere near planning stage yet.
So I have no new Disney trips about which to speculate.
Note the lack of sad smiley there. That’s because I only said I have no new Disney trip about which to tell! We do, indeed, have a big, BIG trip coming up, and it in no way involves The Mouse. It may, however, involve The Prairie Dog, The Rattlesnake, The Elk, The Big-Horn Sheep, and if we’re very, very lucky – the Jackalope. ;)
That’s right – we’re headed west this summer! And not by plane, but by car; we – Gramma, Leo and I – are driving all the way from Florida to the Grand Canyon and back again with plenty of stops along the way. And I wasn’t completely correct in saying there won’t be a hint of Disney involved… we’ll be spending some time with at least one DIs friend along the way! :yay:
I am absolutely going to write about our travels. I predict that this 16-day trip will be equal parts hysterical, educational, heartwarming and off-the-hook insane. Did I mention 16 days? In a CAR? Staying in hotel rooms? With my family?! Oh, it’ll be interesting, for sure. ;)
My challenge is how to go about documenting it. It’s not a Disney trip, so it can’t be here among the DIS trip reports. I think I’d be allowed to do it on the Community board… but it's scary over there. I have a blog space already; I could make a new section for this… but would any of you come along? I honestly, truly, really love the comments and conversation kicked up by trip reports here on the DIS and I’d hate to lose that. What if I leave the blog open, so no one need sign up with a username, etc. to read and comment – would you join me?
Be honest; I can take it! Trust me – I’ll write about this trip no matter what; it’s important to me that it be documented for a host of reasons. But I’d love to share it with you all, too; I have an enormous amount of fun writing here, and that has a lot to do with the amazing readers and fellow writers I’ve met here on the DIS! :grouphug: So by all means, let me know your thoughts on the subject and we’ll see where this goes.
Meanwhile, thanks so very much for sticking around through yet another of my Disney adventures! :grouphug:
How great it was to read that you had such a fantastic day on what could have been a stressful day of fighting the crowds! Fork nazi excepted, of course. (I'm glad that it seemed like everyone had the same response to her -- :eek: followed by :rotfl2: )
Of course I would love to read about your westward adventures! Are you kidding? If you close this thread before you decide where you'll be sharing them, please PM me so that I can find you.
So sad to see your report come to end V, but you did an outstanding job as always with this one! I felt like I was right there with you and Leo and your mom!
I would love to follow you and your family to the Grand Canyon on your next adventure. However and wherever you want to chronicle it. Please keep us up to date on where you post about it. I'm sure it will be funny and heart warming with great pictures.
I love your description of the Fork-Nazi and I think I will be using that term in the future! LOL! Hopefully you haven't copyrighted the name!:rotfl:
Take care of yourself and keep us up to date on your adventures!
Linda
You know, I think sometimes delving into the masses is necessary. Not only does it give you perspective on those low crowd days/parks, but if you go with the right frame of mind (unlike the fork lady :scared1:) it can really be fun. I guess the key is to know it's going to be crowded and mayhem-ish and allow yourself to just go with it and soak it all in. I'm really, really glad it was a great day for you, Leo and Gramma...I know you don't do crowds but it sounds like it was well worth the risk. :thumbsup2
As for your trip...you know I'm in, wherever you happen to post. :goodvibes
Oh my goodness of course I would follow you any where you want to write about your trip!! You know you are my favorite TR writer on the DIS. And 16 days with Grandma :faint: this I have to read about! :hyper:
I ran the idea by the troops, and we all said “What the heck!”
That's the spirit!:thumbsup2
I was impressed. In my 20 years of regular WDW-going, never have I seen anything like it.
I actually saw this during the pirate and princess party:thumbsup2
, looking for Mr. Morrow. Mr. Tom Morrow. (Never gets old, does it?!)
Nope!:goodvibes
Agreed. It's a little too frou frou for me ::yes::
Always got the grilled ruben here, it was decent but.,....
Let's hope it's not closed when you get there and no one winds up riding in a rocking chair on the roof og the family truckster;)
My challenge is how to go about documenting it.
Whatever you decide I am there:thumbsup2
THanks again for sharing your adventures with us V:hug:
V! Great TR!
I would totally follow you to a Blog. But I think you'd be okay doing it in the community board...I attempted to do one last year for my summer vacation and had some readers but I never finished it :rolleyes1 You may have more readers, and it may be easier for people, to see an update here on the DIS. But I personally would read it anywhere. You are an amazing writer and I love reading about your family's adventures!
I'd read FO SHO! Blog or community board, doesn't matter to me. I love going along on your trips!
