Would like to purchase a flat screen tv for DD. Have no idea where to begin. Only know size would be 40", would be on a stand not hanging on a wall, and I would like to keep it under $600. Just a basic tv no bells and whistles needed. Would rather not purchase online. Any suggestions?

Watch the ads. I got a 42 inch for $700 last year from a local place. Try your big box stores--BJ's, Costco, Sam's. Also Wal-mart or Target. You should be able to find one.

Check out your local Best Buy. They had some deals at $597. Also, they frequently have their display models and returns priced very cheap. Good luck!

Wal-mart has some good prices on flat screens. If you do venture onto on-line, Circuit City and Tiger Direct have great sales .

Are you a Costco member? Costco usually has pretty good deals on TVs, and you automatically get a 2 year warranty with them. I just looke online and they have 2 Vizio 37" for $499.99 and $549.99. They also have a Sharp 42" for $649.99.

If she can wait a few months the best time to buy electronics is Thanksgiving day online or black friday in stores. We got a 32" Samsung from Sears for under $400.00 last year. Didn't even have to get up early on black friday. We were able to order it online Thanksgiving night and pick it up at the store the next day.

I would think it would be easy at that price point. We picked up a 40" Toshiba last Christmas for $500, from Electronics Expo. I just looked at their current circular and they have a 40" Sony for $597. So I am sure you could find a good deal local to yourself.

It should definitely be possible within your price range. Last fall hubby and I got a 40" for under $600 and it had a dvd player in it. It works great. Got it at Sam's Club. One problem I've heard about with those "black friday" deals - a lot of the times they are special purchases for that day only so they don't ordinarily carry them in the store and the warranties are pretty much useless later because of that fact.

Should be no problem at all these days. If you have an HH Gregg nearby I would recommend them. They also price match legitimate websites - we got them to price match Amazon on a 37" LG last year and saved almost $200 off of normal retail, and that was only $699, which they then knocked down to $600 after we agreed to purchase a Bluray surround system to go with it. Do your research online first, get reviews, get prices, and THEN go to the store.

Wal Mart has a Vizio 42" for $628 on their website. Sears has a Sony Bravia 40" for $649. These are a little higher than your $600 limit but are nice choices.

You should be able to find products manufactured by either Vizio or Funai (who does business under Sylvania, Magnavox, and Best Buy's "Dynex" brand) at that price point.

Also, sets that operate at 60 hz (hertz - it's the screen refresh rate) tend to be less expensive (If the person watches a lot of sports or plays video games, I wouldn't recommend a 60 hz model) than others operating at 120 hz.

I'm not sure if you have a BrandsMart USA in your area, but if so, I would check them out. I have heard from several people that they have the best prices around for TV's-even compared to Wal-Mart and Best Buy.
