Hi Everyone,

Hoping you could help. I am looking for a reading/writing tutor for my DD6. I was wondering what the going rate was for a certified tutor (someone with a background in education)?

I found one for $40 an hour but have no idea if that is a decent rate or not (we live in NY if that matters).

Thank you for your help.

Hello- I am a teacher. I have a masters degree In Elementary education. I am currently on an 18 month maternity leave. I tutor for $20 an hour. It is kind of low for my background, but I enjoy it. I live in Virginia.

My DS8 gets tutored by the reading specialist in his school. She charges $25 for 45 minutes and he goes once a week.

Hi, I am a special Ed teacher working in an out of district private school. I have done tutoring, during the school year and the summer, usually hired by a sending school district and have been paid between $25-40 per hour.

Good luck.

Here in Northern CA, the going rate for a qualified tutor (with education background/credentials) for elementary students is $40-$50 per hour. Seems comparable to NY, but if you ask me, it seems a little high -- just my two cents.

We are in NY and I have a teacher from the high school who taught math certification for the state. She tutor my middle schooler last year 1 subject and it was $95.00 per hour - yikes I know! She is hard to get as well - always fully booked!

We live in Toronto. Prices generally range between $25-$50 per hour for students up to grade six or so. Prices can be higher for high school range though.

I charge $30 an hour, and am in a lower cost ofliving area. That seems about right.

Where in Virginia

When I tutored I charged $20/hour. That is with holding a Master's degree and having taught in a classroom for 7 years. I live in south central PA if that makes a difference.

Reading tutors in southern Connecticut get approximately $50-60 per hour.

$50-60 per hour for science/math, Central/North Jersey area.

I'm on Long Island and I teach high school math.

I tutored during my SAHM years, from 2000- 2005. At that time, the $70 an hour I charged made me the cheapest tutor I knew. (I tutored from MY house, and had the very rare interruption from the sitter upstairs. That was reflected in my cheaper price.)

No one I know tutors high school subjects for less than $100 an hour.

Not really knowing what you're looking for, here's a suggestion: contact any local colleges that offer a degree in either reading or elementary education Ask whether any of their education students would be interested in tutoring. A college student should charge less than a certified teacher.

Just curious though: if your daughter is only 6, are you sure she needs a reading tutor? I'm certainly out of my element as a teacher, but my youngest daughter struggles with reading as a result of Auditory Processing Deficit. What difficulties is she experiencing?

I'm a certified teacher and I charge $40 an hour (I'm in CT) and that's on the low end. Most of my friends charge 45 or 50.
