Had lunch at Tusker House yesterday.

On a scale of 1-10

Food - 10
Service - 3
Atmosphere - 5

The hostess stand is between the Dawa Bar and the entertainment area. When we arrived the African drummers were playing, and they were loud! So loud you had to scream at the seating hostess to communicate! "I HAVE A RESERVATION FOR 2:00!" We were given a pager and told to wait at a few tables that have been set aside for people waiting to eat. The tables are basically crammed in between the stroller parking area, the bar, and the restaurant. Very crowded, and very noisy. We only had to wait about 10 minutes to be called, but by then my head was pounding from all of the noise. As we were taken to our table we were told the story of the restaurant, and how many vendors have been preparing all sorts of good food for us to eat. We finally arrived at our table and it took a few minutes for our server to arrive and ask about drinks. We headed for the buffet, and the food was pretty good, a watered down version of Boma. I have to admit, my favorite thing on the buffet was the corn dog nuggets from the kids table! Corn Dogs are my favorite amusement park food, and pretty hard to find at Disney. There is mustard available, but you have to look for it! (It's with the salads) They had carved beef, pork, and rotisserie chicken. All very tasty! The rest of the menu is standard buffet food, and can be found elsewhere at Disney. My one gripe about the food, no soup! (Big soup fan here)

The atmosphere was nice on the eye, but rough on the ears. The room is pretty sparse in objects to absorb sound, so any screaming kids, or dropped silverware echo's throughout the entire place. It was pretty loud, as any kid friendly Disney restaurant would be, but perhaps some carpeting would help with the noise level. We did notice a small dining room off to the left of the main entrance, perhaps in the future they could use this for adults dining without children.

The service was the biggest disappointment! Because this was a new location, the union rules were not in place for transfers, so basically Disney could hand pick all of the employees for this opening team. We were expecting the best of the best. If these are the cream of the crop I give up! We were a party of three, and each ordered a soda and a water for a total of six drinks. We only received two straws for all six drinks! Oh well, sorry if you have sensitive teeth! Refills on drinks were hard to come by, and we had to ask twice for more sodas. The server to the right of us was auctioning off drinks! "Ok let's see here, who had the coke? Ok great, now who had the sprite?" Are you kidding me? It's a buffet, all you have to do is remember who is drinking what and clear dishes!!! The server to the left of us was trying to push an $8.00 bottle of water on a guest who simply wanted water for his beverage! "Do you want this bottle of still water, or this one with gas?" The guest told her twice "I just want a glass of water!" He ended up with an $8.00 bottle of still water! When that party left the server opened the check presenter right in the dining room, counted the cash, figured out how much her tip was, and rolled her eyes in disgust! I guess the tip wasn't big enough! BAD SHOW! The guest left his sunglasses and 3/4 of the water he didn't want to purchase anyway. The server just took the sunglasses and placed them on the windowsill near the table. When the guest returned she just stood there and watched as he looked for them. We had to point out to the guest where his sunglasses were placed, and WE were the ones who told him "Hey you paid for that water, it's hot outside, why don't you take it with you?" The server gave us a dirty look! :lmao:

Would I go again? If I had guests in town who really wanted to eat here, maybe. Would I go by myself for a nice meal, probably not.

Enjoyed reading your review ~ Thanx for posting.

Thanks for the review. Kinda points to the differences in service between Buffet and regular dining, although there is no excuse for shoddy drink service! Did they have any signature dishes unique only to Tusker House?

Not really. Most of the items could be found either at Chef Mickey's, Boma, or Restaurant Marrakesh.

Thanks for the review. We have an ADR next Sunday, not totally sure we're going to keep it unless were stuck in AK as there are so few other places to choose from (boy do I miss the old Tusker House already!). I was puzzled to hear you say though that you were given 2 straws? I was surprised there were any straws as I don't recall them being available at all in AK?

They were paper straws, and quite frankly started to fall apart after spending about an hour in the drink.

It sounds as tho our going to lunch at Yak and Yeti WAS the better choice!!
No excuse for shoddy service and given where Tusker House is located, probably no real solution to the kids and noise situations.
