I understand that starting a few weeks ago, if you are staying at a value resort you have the option of turning down Mousekeeping and then receiving a $20 per night Gift Card. Does anyone know if this pilot project will be extended to Moderate and Deluxe resorts ?

That was a brief test which has ended.
Actually I heard they started a new test at Pop for $15/night.

Nobody knows if/when/where any further tests will be conducted.

I hope not.
It actually has to some extent. If you read the note left on the nightstand they extol their "love of the environment" by stating it's normal practice to not change the bedding daily unless you request it ;). I stayed at the Poly early July and saw it.

I will say this is probably an industry wide trend since I saw a similar note at the Hay-Adams, DC, in late May.

For out ten day stay we will only use them once plus day we arrive and day we leave of course.

I don't understand it either. I like to walk into a freshly cleaned room, but I know many people do not like anyone in the room, so why not opt for that and accept the gift card? I honestly do not think that this program will morph into increased room rates for people who want housekeeping. I think it is in place to address a deficit in staff.

I'm curious why some are not too keen on this option ?

For me, personally, I don't want dirty diapers sitting in my hotel room for the duration of my stay, nor do I want to be walking down the hall with them to throw them away myself (and stink up the public trash can). Gross.

It is an option, so you can just not accept the offer. This works for folks who really are not invested in mousekeeping coming in daily, or those who leave the do not disturb sign on their door for their stay.

Me too. I was extremely confused about the details of the first offer, until other posters got through to me as to just how it was working. But I never really thought about the housekeepers and their hours being cut and then when returning to work, having to work themselves to death to clean the rooms that had forgone it for that week. Those pictures that were posted when some housekeepers found out that the trial had ended is priceless. I actually felt compelled to tip more now, even though housekeeping is not a tipped position.

There are a lot of potential negative knock on effects, both on the housekeeping staff (more erratic hours, having to clean harder and more in what we assume is the same amount of time, insecure hours etc) but also on the guest experience (more stuff will need replacing more often, which will put up prices, more garbage will be left around which has impacts on the whole building, including animals) It also divorces housekeeping from being part and parcel of the costs of hotel running if they can put a price on it via gift card, then, eventually, it will be seen as an added extra...
So, yes, it matters if people do or do not accept it.

I really feel bad for the staff on this one. I know Disney has the bean counters working on over drive now like never before, no matter how much profit they made in the previous quarter, but this really hits house keeping hard. Hours cut, less possible tips, and then very possibly working much harder than before.

Well said.

I am not seeing how this makes more work on housekeeping... After anyone's stay a more thorough cleaning should be performed. Maybe I am just naive about how others keep their rooms, but on trips where I use housekeeping and on those where I don't, I leave my room the same on the last day. The only difference is I have more trash collected in the trash bins. I always assumed it was a nice for a housekeeper to see the do not disturb sign and be able to move on to the next room! But perhaps my thinking is wrong.
