Turbo Tax Question State Refund as income?

Every year we use Turbo Tax - it's neat it downloads the previous years info into this years and doing the filing is a piece of cake.

Last year I only purchased the Federal version by mistake (usually get the 'deluxe' federal and state). So I did the state taxes on my own and filed via snail mail.

I swear every year I have to enter how much of a refund (usually a couple of hundred dollars) we get from the state onto our federal (or state?) return and they count it as income (we live in NC if that helps).

This year I can't find where to enter it - not sure if it's messed up because it couldn't download last years state taxes or what.

Any advice?

Thanks!

Dewdrop,

Did you use itemized deductions on your federal return last year? If you did, the state refund goes on line 10 of Form 1040. I hope this helps. :)

First of all...I am not a tax expert...but I have used TurboTax for years.

By looking through my printout I would say it should have come to you on a 1099-G and then you enter that on line 10 of the 1040. It should have popped up during the interview, but if you chose to skip the interview you should still be able to go to the forms.

It's considered one of your 1099 forms. Look under the Wages and Income tag, the Other Common Income section. It should let you put in a 1099-G.

Thanks all!

I normally get a card in the mail from the state with the refund info on it but didn't this year (I'm thinking it got lost in the mail). I'll go check turbo tax now - thanks again!
