I placed an ad ont he tug board for DVC for Hawaiin. Looking for Oahu, HGVC.

I did get a response. He would like 2 weeks in a studio at BWV/BCV but my home is OKW and the time he is going would be 218 pts (not sure about BWV pts). This would be a 1 week trade in a 1, possible 2 BR and he may be able to get more time.

Having never done anything like this I am looking to my friends here to help me with some advice!!!!

What is a comparable trade?? Dean.........are you there????? Diane????

Thanks

***Edited to add: He will get us a 2BR for 2 weeks for a 1BR for 16 days!! I don't have 556 pts (at OKW) for that so we are beginning to search around.......

I'd worry about the "possible 2BR" and the "may be able to get more time." Don't get suckered into a comparative value discussion until that stuff is crystal clear.

I don't know anything about trading, but I have a friend who, just 2 days ago, secured a "home" right on the beach in Hawaii (sorry, I didn't ask what island) that sleeps 8 for $225 per night (peak season was a little higher). She just got on dogpile and google and typed in "hawaii beach rentals". She said they have pictures (the homes are gorgeous), and you can get references.

Maybe I am a little "stingy" with my DVC points (plus, call me nuts...but, Hawaii doesn't appeal that much to me)...but, most 1 bdrms sleep the same as a studio at DVC (from what I have read), so I am not sure that is such a fair trade (but, Dean will certainly know more on this one). But, that's a lot of points!! I'm not sure if "one week for two weeks" is a fair trade! He must know how nice DVC studios are.

I just wanted to give you another option. Maybe look and see what you could find, and then "rent out" enough points to cover your rental. I think you might find a lot more choices, and you can retain more of the "power" and feel more comfortable about your "trade".

Good luck,

IMHO, condos are a dime a dozen in Hawaii. You have the upper hand w/DVC so don't settle for anything less than what you want as far as number of bdrms. and length of stay.

In my opinion, in Oahu there are only two condo type timeshares that I would stay at the HGVC & Marriott Ko'Olina (which is on the other side of the island so, HGVC would be my 1st choice). There might be others that I haven't seen yet but those are the best in my opinion. The rest of the condos in Oahu can be pretty shady and would not have the resort quality of Disney if that is what you are looking for.

As far as trading, I have no clue. I don't think you'll ever come to an agreement as which resort is more valuable. So, I'd just probably figure out if you are getting a 1 bedroom for 1 week then, in return trade for as many points as a 1 bedroom is worth. Maybe pick BCV over OKW because the points are more. Just a wild guess. Then, if the trader wants a studio based on the value of a one bedroom you can tell them how many days they could get a studio for based on the number of points it takes.

Let us know how it turns out. I think, someone else on this board trade with another HGVC member. Hopefully they will respond.

Good Luck!

I'm not sure about the fair trade issue but to give you an idea I just checked the Hilton web site and for a week in a 1 bed. from April 13-20 ( I just picked a date) the best rate is $289 per night.

We just stayed at the HHV in August and the location is great for a visit to Oahu and Waikiki. The grounds are the most beautiful of all the hotels on Oahu. We were in a 2 bedroom and the unit was beautiful...granite countertops, nice decor, full kitchen, etc. very comparable to DVC quality. You can use all the hotel facilities. There is a parking charge of appx. $12 per day if I recall.

It does cost the HGVC owners more points for oceanview than gardenview so I would ask for the oceanview.

If you just look at the $ rate then the fair trade issue is close assuming you value your points at $ 10 per point.

If you have any other questions on HHV let me know.

My hawaii trip for July was arranged via tug. I found EXACTLY what I wanted (a 2-bedroom at the Marriott Ko'Olina). I decided to pay cash and rent out my dvc (which I easily did). I have a Ocean-View Penthouse 2-bedroom which cost me $2100 for a week in July.

I would recommend moving on. There are a lot of Hawaii owners on that board and wait to get exactly what you want. (personally I would never use 218pts ($2180 if rented) for a one bedroom).

Good Luck!
Melissa

I agree with Aero999. I rented 171 points on the rental board for $1710 and it was very easy. At least this way you have full control of your reservation in Hawaii.

Thanks for all the ideas.............renting points sounds great.........where to begin is another topic all together!!

I will have to do a search to find out what a 2 bR oceanview is worth for the timeframe we are going................I couldn't get a reservation when I went on the Hilton website. It said I could "not available" Hilton Grand Vacation Club during the time I wanted.

any other help will be appreciated.

What is the Marrriott like????? Thanks

Aero999 has transacted a great deal for the Marriott Ko'Olina. It is the same deal as I have traded points for in my Ko'Olina condo that I own. It is a new and beautiful oceanfront (protected beach) resort. The area is totally different than that of the HGVC being it is on the far end of Waikiki, you will find a lot more to do in a closer proximity. On the other hand, if beach time and exclusivity is what you desire...the Marriott cannot be equaled. The 4 beaches in the Ko'Olina resort are never crowded because there is very limited parking in the resort. They are also immaculate! The very new town of Kapolei is about a 5 minute drive. Waikiki is about a 35 minute drive from Ko'Olina. I don't think you could go wrong with either of these choices. I prefer being in Ko'Olina, but I love visiting Waikiki.

I really find this hard to believe. This sounds more like a hotel type room not a 1 bedroom condo. But I could be wrong. Do you have a link that shows this because I can't get it to come up? Did you go to the Hilton Hotels site or the Hilton Grand Vacation Club? I keyed in the same exact dates you did.

This is the site I went to rent the villas....

The Hilton is a nice property in a nice location. A 2 BR for 2 weeks compared to 556 DVC points might be a good deal, it depends on specifics. First you should make sure you travel first. Second, it should be for a guaranteed ocean front view, if not, it's not worth it. And you can likely get the same or similar for cheaper. Depending on your needs and your feel for this potential person you are thinking about exchanging with, you may want to counter offer. Do you need a 2 BR? Would the person consider 12 days in a 1 BR with one weekend? You might just get a 2 BR for ONE week then look for something else for more time. IF you were able to trade for this through II, it'd be about $540 points for a 2 BR for two weeks. If you traded through an independent exchange company, it'd likely be even less in most cases. Let us know what happens.

Here's the link...hope it works:

It's $289 for 1 bedroom garden view
It's $319 for 1 bedroom ocean view

HTH

Wow, that sounds like a great rate. I'll have to remember that in the future when we want to visit. In comparison that would be cheaper than a hotel room. I wonder why the Hilton Hotel site shows condos available when the Hilton Grand Vacation Club doesn't?

Thanks for the link...

a few years ago, I found someone that I rented from at the Imperial of Waikiki. It is not a real fancy place but it was clean and only a few steps from the beach. You did not have to cross a major intersection just a small side street. We were up on the 21st floor with a beautiful ocean view, I believe the condo's are 27 floors. We had a one bedroom 2 bath which I got for around $900 for a week. I was close to the Hilton so we walked down there to check it out. We had our two girls with us and they loved the location as it was close to the main shopping area and steps from the beach. It was also convenient since there was an ABC store and Denny's on the bottom floor. I would much prefer the Hilton but this is another alternative. It was nice and well worth the money. We only stayed for a week since we stopped in CA. on the way back to visit relatives and go to Disneyland. Then we were back in the northeast. If you need any other info let me know.

Maybe it's the same reason CRO sometimes has rooms when MS doesn't, members have traded their points for non timeshare options like cruises, etc.

Just my opinion.....

If you really want to stay at the HGVC in Oahu in the summer, I won't wait to long to find an offer. At the 9 month period all HGVC member can start requesting reservations at other HGVC resorts. Summer is a very popular time at the HGVC in Oahu.

It is my understanding that you can only reserved the one bedroom at hilton.com. I've seen one bedroom rates for $279 to $609 depending on the season and availability. If a one bedroom can work for you and if there is availability, I would hold a one bedroom at a refundable rate at hilton.com just in case you can't find something better.

Perhaps you can use the World Passport Collection points as an approx guide using low season (207 pts) as the standard view, mid season (252 pts) as oceanview and high season as oceanfront (270 pts).

HGVC points at the Hilton Hawaiian Village
4800 pts - One Bedroom Standard
6200 pts - One Bedroom Oceanview
7000 pts - Two Bedroom Standard
8400 pts - Two Bedroom Oceanview
9600 pts - Two Bedroom Oceanfront

FYI... lower HGVC points for off season (Gold) weeks 19-22, 36- 41
For example a two bedroom oceanfront for 7000 pts

Good Luck

You are probably right. I always forget about those. Still an awesome rent deal.

My DH and I did 10 days in Hawaii in April. I wanted a few days on Oahu and a week on Maui. A private trade is great when both parties are honest and communicate well - it does take a great deal of trust. We've done it twice and both have been great!

About 14 months prior to our trip, I posted on TUG for a trade for Hilton Hawaiian Village on Waikiki and got many responses. I had read about how the Hilton points system works and saw that their seasons are similar to DVC and they have 3 weekend days (higher points) and 4 weekdays. I indicated that I preferred a studio and a partial week trade.

The first person that responded changed their mind a few days into our emailing. The second response sounded promising and after a few emails, it seemed like we had similar trades in mind. I ended up trading 4 weekdays in a BWV studio for 3 weekdays in a HHV studio because I was getting a higher season than I was giving. I did get 2 more responses to my TUG ad that I had to turn down.

For Maui, rather than trading, I rented a 1 bedroom ocean front from a condo owner (not timeshare) for $150/night. What a deal! Again I worried that it might be a dump, that there wouldn't be a reservation for us, etc but it worked out wonderfully. But I digress...

About HHV - It is a large hotel complex with 5 towers (1 for the timeshare units) and restaurants, shops and a large pool. Well the pool isn't that large for the entire complex - you'd better put your towel on a lounge chair by 9am or you won't get a place by the pool till dinner time but it is very nice. The side of the lagoon tower (timeshare units) faces the ocean so none of the units are actually ocean front (except maybe the corner units) but we did have a side ocean view from our 2 (smallish) windows. There are also many tall buildings there so expansive views are hard to come by. Our studio was on the 16th floor and very nice but just a bit smaller than a BW studio and there was no balcony but the 1BR did have a balcony.

I'd say that HHV is comparable to DVC. If you want a hotel on busy Waikiki, go to HHV. If you want a quiet resort, Ko Olina might be a better choice. I don't know what activities HHV has, we didn't have kids with us and weren't there much; we were out exploring the island. If you have any questions, please ask.

There are actually two oceanfront units on every floors (see link for pictures). The rest of the rooms at the Lagoon Tower are either ocean view or standard views depending on the floor/location. All of the oceanfront rooms are two bedroom units except for the two units on the top floor which are three bedroom penthouse units.
