Just an interesting tidbit, but the Transportation Security Administration plans to slash 6000 jobs over the next four months. I wonder if this will effect how fast the baggage and passengers are processed through the airport terminals...

TSA Slashes 6000 Airport Screener Jobs
May 1, 2003
The number of screeners at US airports is to be reduced by 6000 in a cost-cutting move by the Transportation Security Administration.
Admiral James Loy, the agency's chief, admitted that budget constraints were part of the decision to cut the jobs which will produce savings of an estimated USD$280 million.
The TSA, formed in response to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, has been criticized in some political circles for growing too big. Its present screener work force totals 55,600. The agency will cut 3,000 jobs by May 31 and another 3,000 by the end of September.
"While we still live in a dangerous world, it also is time to assess our workplace requirements in relation to budget realities," Loy said. "This means looking at the level of screener staffing at every airport, how many are part-time, how many are full-time and whether they are on duty at the right time when passenger traffic is heaviest.
"My pledge to the American people is to respond to our new challenges with the same dedication and energy as we did after the 9/11 tragedy, building in the efficiencies of a good steward without diminishing the high level of security we have achieved."
Whenever possible, Loy said, TSA will use attrition - estimated at about 700 jobs a month - to ease the pressures of the cuts.
Screeners will be able to transfer to other airports where there is a shortage of security staff and others may work part-time.
The announcement by Admiral Loy was part of a wide range of measures that will refine aviation security and soon provide USD$2.3 billion to airlines to cover their share of security costs since the September 11 terrorist attacks.
In addition to the scaling down of screener numbers, a requirement that law enforcement officers be posted at airport checkpoints is to be lifted.
