TSA PreCheck and RAC

Since TSA has expanded their PreCheck program, more people (not just frequent flyers) are eligible.

For those that don't know, preCheck allows you to keep your shoes and belts on; and your handkerchief can stay in your pocket. You walk through the metal detector (not the Xray or millimeter wave machines); and usually is a much shorter line.

We were flying into Orlando on Thursday and printed the boarding passes at home (as usual) and there was the PreCheck symbol on the boarding passes.

Because we had an early flight, and weren't sure we could get our luggage to RAC in time, I went and had concierge print the boarding passes from the web site (just like I did for the flight to Orlando); and it had the preCheck symbol on it.

We did manage to get our luggage to RAC the next morning, and got our boarding passes from their (RAc) computer system. The boarding passes didn't indicate pre check.

So, a heads up. If your boarding passes had pre check indicated on it on the way to Orlando, print out the return boarding passes yourself (or through the concierge desk) from the airline web site.

I should have had the desk print my pre check in passes, when I got to MCO the one with Micky on it was missing information that caused an issue. They did check other documents made a note on the boarding ticket and left me through.

............

:(

I know, I don't like this at all. Pre ✔️ lines are getting longer with inexperienced flyers. I went through this morning at IAD and the woman in front of me was arguing because she didn't understand why she couldn't take her water bottle through security. :rolleyes2

Boston's Logan was testing their precheck line back in Sept. Dh and I got lucky and got sent to that line. Sooooo nice. Nothing other than the 3-1-1 baggie came out. Shoes and belts on. Loved it.

Sadly, there are still many uninformed flyers out there. They have done no research into what is expected of them at the airport and then their ignorance slows everyone else down.

The 3-1-1 bag doesn't need to come out--per the TSA instructions. So basically, just bags on the belt and walk through. It sure was nice.

Bolding mine. I just returned from a trip to California. Outbound had preCheck. I printed boarding passes at the hotel for the return flight. No preCheck this time. :sad2: Not sure how they select passengers.

There is an element of randomness to the system

You're right....as I think back, I had my baggie in my hand and the TSA told me to put it back in my bag!!! Soooo nice.

When we travel, I have to bring liquids for a medical condition. I usually take them out of my bags along with the 3-1-1 bag.

If you have TSA preCheck, do they still do the check on the liquids?

You still have to follow the liquid rules, but the 311 bag does not have to be removed.

Randomly selecting passengers to participate without them checking the rules slows down the line. It's getting to be like regular security. Yesterday when I went through the TSA Pre ✔️ Line, I also saw people taking off shoes, taking out 311 bags, etc.

PreCheck can definitely save time.

On the way to Orlando, both my wife and I had pre check.

But on the way back, only I had precheck, and she had to go through the regular line.

So, I got through security and got to the gate. 20 minutes later my wife got to the gate.

Please don't blame those that are randomly selected! When we were sent to that line, no one bothered to tell us that it operated differently. We 'knew' the drill and what we normally do. Both my dh and I are experienced fliers. We were hugely surprised to find our shoes and belts stayed on. I had just explained to my dh that my iPad mini didn't have to come out, but his laptop did when the TSA guy told us to leave everything in our bags! Would have been nice if someone had mentioned that when we were sent there.

Hancock Airport here in Syracuse just started the PreCheck back in September. I saw last week on the news some passengers who weren't signed up for the PreCheck were randomly selected to use it.:coffee:

Yes, I understand the problem if you are randomly selected. It just doesn't make sense though to randomly select people who haven't been pre-screened. It used to be a nice benefit if you are a frequent flyer. Now it can be almost as bad as regular security.

I really wish the security would just be relaxed for all.

So glad I bought Global Entry this year.:rolleyes2 It was so nice getting through TSA in under five minutes. If they were going to do this I wish they would have not opened the application process to us. What a waste of my time and money now that anyone can get Pre Check without being pre screened. At this point they might as well just make everyone Pre Check.

:thumbsup2

At least it's unlikely people will randomly be selected for Global Entry.

There is no reason not to use this "old" method of screening, now called PreCheck, for everyone. None of the two or three events that led to the "shoe carnival" and the "war on liquids" occurred in a US airport. It's time to "stop the insanity."

I agree.
