I'm trying to get everything together for our trip in two weeks, and I'm a little confused about what you can and can't bring on the plane. I've read the TSA's pamphlet about 3 oz. or less containers of liquids, aerosols, etc. But it says you can only have one bag. I'm packing for DH and myself and one little ziploc bag just won't cut it! I just have shampoo, toothpaste, shaving cream, and a small can of hairspray

What do you do with your makeup? Hair care products that are over 3 oz.? Can you bring larger hair gels, mists, if they're in the checked in baggage? Food like coffee grinds, Splenda, crackers, etc.?

We haven't flown since all these new regs are in place so any help is appreciated.

For one thing, you "each" get a 1 quart ziploc bag.

This is to bring those liquids you need for your 1st 24 hours in your carryon.

We usually each bring a sample toothpaste, a sample shampoo, a sample shaving cream, and a sample size sunscreen, and my foundation, mascara, and lipstick.

Since I don't like Disney's shampoo. A regular size bottle goes in my checked bag.

Larger liquids and the other items you mention can be brought in checked luggage.

You can pack whatever toiletries you like in your checked luggage, in any amounts. The stuff in your carry-on should be just what you need just in case your checked luggage is delayed.

As far as allowable toiletries in your carry-on, keep in mind that you are permitted to have one quart-sized zip-top bag PER PASSENGER. So if it's you and your husband, you can take 2 such bags with you. But it literally must be no more than one per person. In other words, don't pack both quart-sized bags into your one carry-on bag. That won't fly.

We actually do put both quart bags in the same bag, but pull them out as we get in line, and lay them on the belt in the same bin. But we get to the scanner at the same time, so it's obvious there are two people.

Anything you want can go in the checked bags...just use normal caution when packing so as to avoid any leakage.
For that quart baggie...each person with a seat on the plane gets one. So, you and your dh would each be able to have a qt baggie of your own. They need to come out of the carryon anyway, so if you have only one carryone for the two of you, you're still okay.
In my carryon I put..travel docs, money, electronics (in their own huge zip-loc baggie), a change of clothes, a swim suit in the summer, book, snack. My qt ziploc baggie has...2 oz hand sanitizer, mouthwash, hand lotion, sunblock, deod. My make up goes in my checked bag with my other toiletries.

We've flown many times since the new regulations and we don't check any bags. The only makeup I put in the ziploc is liquid foundation - mascara and lipstick stays in my carry-on.
I always bring ham+cheese sandwiches and bagels. Once, I forgot I had pudding in there and it was confiscated (oops). Coffee, splenda, crackers can definitely go in your carry-on.
