Hi everyone!

My husband and I are going to the World in September. :banana:This is going to be my last "can eat anything I want" Trip.

I am planning on getting gastric bypass in 2010, and was wondering if I can eat off of the children's menu( which is not incredibly healthy) the next time I go.:confused3 Or if there is a senior menu, or a post surgery menu that may be more nutritious. I know it sounds like a weird question. I guess my concern is that Children's menus all seem to be chicken fingers and PB & J. I really am not into those if I could have something healthier. I need to be VERY careful with the nutrients after surgery, and will probably have difficulty eating some things. Not to mention that portion sizes are Disney are HUGE! :scared1:

Sorry if this is in the wrong forum.

I'm fairly certain I've heard of people ordering off the children's menu before after surgery. Like you said, it isn't very healthy. Too bad they won't just let you order half an entree. Tell your husband he has to go on a diet for the trip and share an entree with him. ;) Of course the entree will be your choice every time. ;)

As popular as the surgery is I'm certain others will be along to offer you some suggestions.

Congrats on the surgery.

I had bypas a year ago. What my husband and I do is order 1 appatizere , soup or salad and an entre and share it. I usally will take a few bites of what ever the appatizer or whatever is and then about 25% of the entre and I am more then full. We do this with everthing now. We go to Subway and order a foot long have them cut it into 1/4s, I eat 1/4 and he eats the rest. The hardest part is agreeing on something. Good luck with the surgery.

I don't know if they still do it at signature restaurants, but I ordered 1/2 portions at Artist Point twice. If I can't order 1/2 portion, we just share one full meal...

My MIL is a on a very strict diet and has a hard time eating off the menu. We took her to Disney in April for some quality time with her grandson and we at almost every meal at a TS restaurant. They were GREAT!! The chef came out, discussed her diet constraints, and made here a special meal tailored to her eating abilities.

To be honest I was almost jealous because, as a healthy eater, it is sometimes hard to select a a healthy menu item w/out always eating salad or grilled chicken. Then again, I don't want her health issues so I'll eat my salad and smile.

When you make your reservations, mention that you have special dietary needs. Then, when you check in at the podium, make sure you inform them again. They should be able to accommodate you. They're pretty good about it.

First of all there is no problem for anyone to order a child's meal. My wife would routinely order the childs (4oz) filet at the Contemporary Streakhouse with no problems.

I would suggest going to the disABILITIES Forum and look at Post #3 of the disABILITIES FAQs. There is a large section in that post dealing with special dietary needs, as well as many related links. You can get directly to the disABILITIES FAQs by following the link in my signature.

This is a very common topic of discussion in the disABILITIES Forum.

My DH had gastric bypass in March so we did lots fo research on this. We checked with one of the Disney Mom's on the Mom's panel and numerous other sites, along with his doctor. What they all suggest is DON'T get the kids menu - Fried food, (no-no) hamberburgers, (high fat), can you say "dumping ground" - dumping is not what you want to be doing at Disney let alone anywhere else.
Read up on what is on the menus, we have found there are several wonderful comprehensive sites including ours that provide great details, as does allears, and determine which ones best meet your needs. Remember that your new stomach (pouch) is roughly 1 oz and by 3-6 months you at 3 oz. All meals we have planned have drinking lots of water before he eats, asking for a drink that is able to be taken out of the restuarant or had prior to meal - eat and then the 1 hr wait till he can drink again. We found that we will need to bring in protein bars, protein chips, nuts, string cheese, and a camelpak for water daily, so that my DH has all of his meals and water. We found table services are fairly easy, sticking to meats (DH can't do chicken - sticks in his pouch, so medium rare steaks or grilled fish it will be). We contacted the food and special dietary folks with Disney, and the sent us a document to complete with all the restaurants where we are eating and they will provide to the chef's of each restuarant. We were also told to tell them when we check in we have special dietary needs. From what I have been told, the chef will come out and chat with you, and then prepare a meal special for you. (Based on what is on the menu - but within your needs).
We were told on the phone to avoid all sauces (as they can have sugar on them), also be wary of anything with sweetner, I guess pouched folks can only have Splenda for sweetner.
When you make your dining reservations, not you have special dietary needs, and they can copy on each of your reservations.
The counter services are a little more difficult to find - but doable. Sunshine Seasons has grilled foods, most locations have a salad - if your pouch is up to salad at that point. (Some folks don't get to eat salad until 6mon/1 yr post op). As we were told remember that this will be a high fat week for you and don't plan on loosing any weight - in fact you may hit a small stall, but once your home and back on your regular eating, you should resume your weight loss.
Have lots of fun!! OH - Remember your VITAMINS!! :dance3:

Just have to add that I have food allergies and all the restaurants are great to work with me so I don't see why this would be any different. Don't be afraid to talk with them or have them note on your reservations about the surgery.
