9/1 Chef Mickey’s (Breakfast)

What can I say? This was just a fun breakfast to have with the kids, and allow them to have a good time. We had the earliest seating at 7:00 A.M. so the kids were a little cranky at having to get up so early and get ready.

There were plenty of options on both the hot and cold side of this buffet. It was nothing spectacular, but everything was plentiful and fresh. I was actually surprised that my kids wanted to go back, not just for the characters, but for the food. Even with the distractions of the characters and napkin twirling the kids ate really well.

I would do this again, but would probably make a 8:00 or 8:30 reservation. The whole family liked the Contemporary also, and I think for our next visit we will stay there.

9/1 Shutters

DH – Back Fin Crab Cakes
Market Fresh Fish
Corona (x2)
Oreo Snowball Cheesecake

DW – Spicy Island Wings
Char Grilled Ahi Tuna
Caribbean Smuggler (x2)

DS – Spicy Island Wings
Kids Combo of Mini Burger & Mini Hot Dog
Chocolate Cake
Coke

DD – Lobster Bisque
Kids Burger
Brownie
Coke

My wife chose Shutters primarily because the had wings on the appetizer menu as well as Ahi Tuna for an entrée. We started off with drinks while checking the menu although DW knew exactly what she would be having for her meal. DW had the Caribbean Smuggler, but I was kind of disappointed that they did not offer any beers on tap, and ended up going with a bottle of Corona.

For starters I had the back Fin Crab Cakes. These were good, but not great. I might have liked them better if I had not already had better crab cakes at Olivia’s a few nights earlier. DW of course got the wings, and DS ordered the wings as well, but really got them so my wife would have some to take back to the room for a future snack. DD wanted the Lobster Bisque since she had really enjoyed some of my Kona Chowder on Sunday evening. Again, it was okay, but the chowder was a tough act to follow.

Entrees were much the same story really. Good decent food, but really had a hard time matching some of the exceptional meals we had already experienced. DW asked for the Ahi Tuna to be served raw instead of seared as stated on the menu. I’m guessing that this was not the first time that this request had been heard because the waiter said it was no problem at all. My wife has made this request at other restaurants and the server usually looks at her like she has three heads or something. The tuna was of a nice size, but was not of the highest sushi grade. DW was still happy with the meal though. My Market Fresh Fish was a nice sized piece of salmon served on a bed of black bean seafood chili and yellow rice, and garnished with a slice of crispy plantain. It was nice and moist and I would probably order it again. The kids meals were standard stuff and we heard no complaints from them.

For dessert the kids ordered a slice of chocolate cake and a kids brownie. These were both fine, but the winner here was the Oreo Snowball Cheesecake. The presentation was really nice and it tasted great, but was fairly rich. If rich desserts aren’t your thing, I would avoid this. As the name says, it looks just like a snowball. The cheesecake has Oreo cookie mixed in with it and is then rolled in coconut flakes. Sitting behind it is a crisp cookie type deal that is kind of shaped like a curved castle wall. Its actually hard to descibe. Think of maybe a baseball parks outfield wall with a picket fence style top. The bottom couple of inches of this wall (it was probably 6 inches high total) is coated with chocolate. At the top middle of the wall was a 50th Anniversary Celebration chocolate medallion.

Overall it was a decent meal, but nothing spectacular. I would probably go back at some point, but it is not on a must do list for us, and the next time we visit WDW there are other places we want to try that we didn’t have the time for this visit.

9/2 Sci-Fi Dine-In (Lunch)

DH – Crispy Onion Rings
BBQ Chicken Breast Sandwich
Iced Tea
Space Invaders Margarita

DW – 7 Bean Beef Chili
Shrimp Penne Pasta
Space Invaders Margarita (x2)

DS – All American Burger w/American Cheese and Bacon
Chocolate Shake

DD – Kids Chicken Nuggets
Chocolate Shake

Here is another place we chose for the kids primarily. I thought they would enjoy the atmosphere here, and they really did. After reading some fairly poor reviews of the dinner choices here on the DIS I made our ADR for lunch. We were seated within just a couple minutes of checking in at a car near the back right hand side.

Our server asked us right away if we were on the dining plan and explained how to maximize before taking our drink orders. I didn’t really feel like anything alcoholic yet so I went with iced tea while DW ordered a margarita with the electric ice cube. The kids had shakes which were extremely thick and extremely delicious.

For starters I knew I wanted the onion rings after seeing the pictures on the food porn thread. I’m an onion ring freak and was really looking forward to these and they did not disappoint. The kids shared the rings with me as the order was quite plentiful. DW had the chili which was pretty good, but again she had to kick it up with some Tabasco. She doesn’t like to have big meals, especially in the middle of a hot Florida day, so I ended up eating the last half of the bowl of chili.

For entrees I had the BBQ Chicken Breast sandwich. It was nice and juicy and the breast was a very healthy size. I forgot to ask the server to hold the fries though. I knew I wouldn’t eat any of them after all the onion rings and chili I had, but I just completely spaced it out. It must have been all of those old Sci-Fi trailers that were hypnotizing me. DW had the Shrimp Penne Pasta. Another HUGE portion, and I think she counted at least 20 shrimp. I tried some of this and was impressed. DS had the All-American burger with American cheese and bacon. He said it was the best burger he had at WDW so far, but he ran out of gas about halfway through. I ended up eating some of the burger sans bun, and it was a tasty burger. DD had chicken nuggets which were standard fare with no complaints.

Our server checked back with us a few times to make sure everything was fine and to clear plates, etc. The service was quite attentive here even though it was very busy. When we were offered dessert I opted to have a margarita instead. Everyone else was so full that this was the only meal where no one had any type of dessert at all. Actually I ordered the margarita more because I knew that the one electric ice cube and two kids equation never seems to work out. When I ordered my margarita my wife asked the server if we could get a green ice cube since we already had a blue one. She said no problem, and suggested that maybe my wife could have one more drink as well and she would make sure it had a red cube in it so the color collection would be complete. They even prepared it to go for her. Such a deal.

I would definitely go back here for lunch, especially since MGM doesn’t offer much in the way of counter service places. About the only thing I could really complain about was that the chili was a little on the lukewarm side, but it wasn’t cold.

Was the magarita you have in Sci-fi virgin drinks? I didn't know you can order a drink as lunch! Is that a common practice?

No, it was not a virgin. I paid separately for the alcohol. And yes, drinking at lunch is a common practice, with me at least. :teeth:
