Trying to wrap my head around this question...

This is a pretty involved question and I'm not even sure I'll make myself clear but here goes:

I hypothetically have a 50 point BWV contract that won't be closing in time to take advantage of the 11 month window for my vacation desires this year.

Because of the lateness in making a reservation, say the only thing open for my requested nights are a one-bedroom at SSR for 4 of the nights...the fifth night filled in with a cash ressie at Pop. So, that's 88 points.

So, I'd be using the 50 2007 pts and 38 borrowed 2008 points. Now, I would also happen to be waitlisted for a 1 bedroom at OKW and BWV (standard view - impossible I know). These would be 72 points for the same stay.

Say the wait list comes through for the one bedroom at OKW. What happens to the 16 points that are not used? Are they put back into my 2008 allotment as if they were never borrowed or are they still considered borrowed points and must be used by end of use year 2007?

Use year would be September and this vacation would be in mid-October.

I'm hoping someone has some insight,
Suzanne

You can't unborrow points. What you would want them to do is to use the borrowed points first and then bank the 2007 points you won't be using into 2008.

If you are talking about October 2008, your September 2007 points would have to be banked into your 2008 use year to use them. Then you would have to borrow 2009 points if more were needed. If you have points coming back because of a waitlist, you would want to call MS and make sure they allocate the points as current year (2008) points, so they can then be banked. If you are talking about October 2007, then Deb&Bill gave you the right info.

Are you trying to close in a resale and aren't sure you can close by the 11 month window? I am a bit confused, since I couldn't figure out if you were planning to book October '07 or '08. FYI, it is probably late right now to book anything for October '07.

Sorry to not be more clear. I was talking about October 2007. As it stands there is availability at SSR in a 1-bedroom for the dates I want but nowhere else. I thought, however, that maybe some movement would occur at the 30-day mark when people had to give up their reservations or risk losing their points.

So, you can ask them to return certain points...they aren't just done arbitrarily? If that's what I'm understanding then that's good.

Thanks for the input,
Suzanne

You need to be aware of one more thing that could come into play in this situation. If your waitlist comes through 30 days or less from your check-in day, the points that are freed up from cancelling your initial reservation will go into "holding". Points in holding cannot be banked and can only be used to make a reservation 60 days prior to check-in. You will be using 72 of those "holding" points for the waitlist reservation, but the 16 points that you saved by moving from SSR to OKW or BWV will not be bankable and will be subject to the restrictions I mentioned. You will need your waitlist to come through 31 days or more from your check-in date to avoid this problem.

Thanks for letting me know! I guess I won't bother waitlisting for too long and be happy if I can get SSR for 88 at this late date. I'm in ROFR purgatory right now so between that and closing, I don't even think I'm going to make it. We have a cash ressie at Pop Century in any case.

One suggestion my sister made (she has 230 pts at OKW) is that perhaps she could make the reservation for me if/when I passed ROFR with her points. That way she would know that the deal is going to go through but I wouldn't have to wait the additional time until I closed. I would have to pay her back though because she needs her points for a family get-together in January 08 at HHI that is requiring all her points. I would transfer the points back to her after closing but I'm not sure I can.

I only have 50 per use year and would need to repay 88. I understand that you can only borrow to make a specific reservation so I couldn't borrow 38 to transfer to someone else right?

Any insight?...sorry for all the questions,
Suzanne

I'm not a point transfer expert but I'm pretty sure you cannot transfer banked or borrowed points so you would probably have to pay her back in two installments over two Use Years. Members get one transfer per Use Year (either into or out of their accounts) so you and your sister would both use up your one transfer two Use Years in a row to do this, meaning that neither of you will be able to transfer any other points in or out during those two Use Years.

If your sister is using all her points for her Jan. '08 ressie, she has already made that reservation long ago. There is no way she could make your ressie without borrowing points, so you would need to pay her back points over the course of 2 years. You COULD make a ressie for her with your points at your 11 month window with both current and borrowed points though.

Yes she did mention that she'd have to borrow to make my reservation but she said it was okay if I was going to transfer them back. I didn't think I could transfer them all in one lump though.

Making the reservation for her would be a good idea. That way I could do it all in one. I would have to bank my '07 points when they come through after closing and then make a reservation in 2008 with all 88.

We'll work something out...thanks for the excellent advice and the good ideas,
Suzanne
