I was recently put down over at TalkDisney that left a sour taste in my mouth. I thought at first a smaller, more close-knit discussion board would be nicer. But after trying to express my opinions over the purchase of the new Sleeping Beauty DVD, I'm just left annoyed.

The administrator kept deleting my posts and then edited a perfectly good one that "played by the rules". Apparently I'm not allowed to generalize people, calling them "fools" for buying a DVD they already own. It's not even as though I was serious either; simply playful banter. Tell me I won't have that problem here. Are people more laid back? Thanks!

:rotfl2: Well we have our "sore" topics here also. pool hopping, taking kids out of school, gay week, "deluxe vs. value resorts", "in debt and going to disney" are usually hot button items here. I think overall we're a pretty happy bunch but I'm sure every one here has probably been "flamed" a time or two. Overall I enjoy the dis immensely
Over on the community forum they will discuss politics and religion. I avoid those like the plague.

Hmm. This sounds a lot better.

Over at TalkDisney, there always seemed to be a lot of tip-toeing around. It was VERY family friendly. I mean, obviously I like family friendly stuff. It's why I love Disney and why I'm here. But people need their releases. And not being able to call someone a fool, not maliciously either, just in jest, was eeeeh, not up my alley.

It's like....okay. I went to WDW last month and at dinner one night, my friends and I had this awesome waiter. Aaron or Andrew I think his name was. Anyway, he joked around so much, was so funny and was an all around great guy. And he made some adult themed jokes too. (We were 6 kids in our early 20s.) So, you could tell he felt good to let loose a bit wit older folk. Seeing as the majority of the people that came in their were families with children.

So, moral of the story, I need a place where I can discuss Disney everything with people who share my interests but at the same time, be able to have an adult conversation with people and use adult words like "fool" and not be worried about offending anyone.

I appreciate your concerns but know that every online community has rules and guidelines. If you begin posting rants and making unkind comments directed at members, your posts will be removed at most websites.

A community requires mutual respect and treating others the way you want to be treated. But to call someone a fool, IMO, is not appropriate.

But then I'm not on staff here...so I bow to their input and decisions. ;)

So what was the problem with the SB DVD? Just that someone already had a previously released version?

No no. My opinion is:

I've been looking over all of the special features on the new DVD. And then I've also been reviewing all of the special features on the old special edition release and just feel like the bonus material is mostly the same stuff just rehashed and that in buying the movie (if one already owns the first release), you really wouldn't be getting much bang for your buck.

:welcome: to the DISboards.

We are glad that you have decided to join us. I will caution you that we do keep things family friendly here, and we don't allow name calling, so your fools remark would not be welcomed here either. I would suggest that you read our Board Guidelines found here: http://www.wdwinfo.com/guidelines.htm Particularly this one,

NO FIGHTING/SARCASM: While we'd like to think that a Disney fan site is always lighthearted, there are times when there are disagreements. Let's face it, there are certain topics that can transform any of us into a raging "Donald Duck." When you sense this is happening, we ask that you step away from the discussion before it escalates into a fight. Just like Mom always said about fighting, we don't care who started the argument and we don't want it on the DIS. (Okay, she didn't say the part about the DIS, but you know what we mean.) No attacking others and no sarcasm please. Either will result in an infraction.

Also take a look at the infraction system found at that link. Hopefully that will give you a better idea of how things work here. We always enjoy different opinions and informed discussions, but we do try to keep things friendly and respectful. :)

I think people are taking me the wrong way.

I'm not looking for a place to vent. But simply a place where jokes can be understood. You all seem to think I need somewhere to express anger and a place where I don't have to watch what I say. Not at all. Just a place where people have a little more sense.

I don't pick fights. I don't want to. I'm not that person. Just, if I call someone a "fool", it's simply in jest and not meant to be taken seriously.

I respect everybody's opinion.

I recommend finding ways to communicate that won't appear to be insults.

Referring to other posters as "fools" won't be accepted here, either. :)

Well then I guess if nobody is open minded enough to understand a joke and playful banter from an insult then I will have to either find someplace else I can go or, I will have to enjoy Disney alone in solitaire again.

Anyone know how to cancel an account?

WELCOME to the DIS :cheer2:

I do understand what you are saying, however, and not to be rude, but while you may mean it in jest may not be understood as jest. I often have to rmind myself that we are reading conversations and not listening to them - while you may say it a certain way while writing (I talk as I write) may not be "said" the same way when someone is reading your response. And FWIW, I would take offense if someone called me a fool or any other name for whatever reason - even if it is owning 2 VHS copies of SB, 1 "older" DVD, and just purchased the special edition DVD - b/c that's me :woohoo:. It's our money so if we want to go out and buy 10 copies of a movie we already have, it's our perogative.

Well, that's a little extreme. Don't you think? ;)

I love playful banter as much as the next person. Heck, my mom and I will call each other some pretty bad names just make each other laugh (and it works every time)

The problem with doing it online is that, in text the comments come across a lot harsher because you don't hear the inflections in a person's voice or see the twinkle in their eye.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with cracking a joke but you need to understand that somebody could misread your intentions.

So don't give up on the DIS yet.
Unless, of course, you were just joking :rolleyes1

Why don't you hang out awhile and read and post and just enjoy. You will find there is a lot banter that goes on, and the smilies can help to emphasize your message as funny or joking. We are just saying that words that can be interpreted as an insult can often not be distinguished as a joke or mean spirited.

In real life I have been known to joke with my friends and call them a "dingbat" but I know I can't do that here. It wouldn't be taken in the same spirit without my voice and my smile and the fact that here I am talking to people that I have never met and don't know me.

Read the Theme Parks Board, maybe wander to the Community Board and get a feel for how this community interacts.

If you do decide to move on then there is nothing you need to do. Accounts can't be canceled. You just simply stop posting.

very well said :)

I haven't been here long (well, alot of lurking for a bit of a year between trips) but find the community to be lots of fun. Great folks. Funny characters. Some are actual "dingbats". ;) I think you'll enjoy it here too.

Wait a minute! Have we met????:confused3 ;)

:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

(see some banter does work well, and you can get away with names;) )

I called some people Goofy because they didn't like Dole Whips. Am I going to get a reprimand? ;)

That depends. Do you know for a fact that they look like this?;)

I heard it was Dingbats who didn't like Dole Whips. :joker: I guess I heard wrong.
