I know it's a little early for most to be thinking about Christmas but... I'm trying to get a head start. I'm planning to make a bunch of Christmas cookies to give out in addition to presents for my family, co-workers, and friends.

I have a lot of recipes for Christmas cookies but I know there are some wonderful bakers and cookie lovers on the DIS and I would love to get your opinion on the BEST cookies for Christmas. I'm looking to make about 5-6 different types this year!

So, tell me the best, the unique, your favorite!

Thanks! :santa:

These are very yummy! I now get requests and pretty much must make them for the holidays.

Pumpkin Spice Cookies

Ingredients:
1 package (18-1/4 ounces) yellow cake mix
1/2 cup quick-cooking oats
2 to 2-1/2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice
1 egg
1 can (15 ounces) solid-pack pumpkin
2 tablespoons canola oil
3 cups confectioners' sugar
1 teaspoon grated orange peel
3 to 4 tablespoons orange juice

Method:
1. In a bowl, combine the cake mix, oats and pumpkin pie spice.
2. In another bowl, beat the egg, pumpkin and oil; stir into dry ingredients just until moistened.
3. Drop by 2 tablespoonfuls onto baking sheets coated with nonstick cooking spray; flatten with the back of a spoon. Bake at 350° for 18-20 minutes or until edges are golden brown. Remove to wire racks to cool.
4. In a bowl, combine confectioners' sugar, orange peel and enough orange juice to achieve desired spreading consistency. Frost cooled cookies.*Yield:*32 cookies.

:rotfl:Love it!!

I love those too. They're a classic. I'll have to find that recipe..

Thanks!! Anyone else?

I don't have the recipe on me, but I'm sure a recipe you have would be easy to modify.

My father makes Oatmeal Craisin cookies each year. Just like the oatmeal rasin cookies, but with dried cranberries instead. It gives it a little extra taste and makes them so yummy!

I am also a huge fan of White Chocolate Macadamia.

You can make these anytime during the year but we have them for every holiday season. So it makes it a "Christmas cookie" for me. LOL

Magic Bars (easy to make)

graham cracker crust
layer of chocolate chips (one bag)
layer of butterscotch chips (one bag)
layer of coconut (usually 1/2 bag)
sprinkling of chopped nuts (I usually omit these, we don't care for them)
can of sweetened condensed milk

Bake on 350* for 30-40 minutes.

DELISH!!!

You guys ROCK!

Thanks so much! I'm open to more if anyone wants to share!

I love something we call russian teacakes. It's a buttery shortbread cookie with walnuts, rolled in powdered sugar. They are so light they just about melt in your mouth. My kids like my molassess crinkles, too--taste like chewy ginger snaps.

As the de facto baker in the family, my answer is "Whichever ones I didn't have to bake".

Actually, the big classics around here are snickerdoodles (using my grandmother's recipe), iced sugar cookies, cream cheese spritz cookies, and thumbelinas. Last year, I made Kourabiedes, and they were well-enough recieved that I will do them again this year. And I make rumballs, but those are mainly for me. ;)

DW makes a ton of hard candy, and I generally make a fruitcake, using the recipe from Good Eats. And there are usually a couple other things that get made as well - at least one pumpkin pie, a gooseberry pie, maybe a mince or pecan as well.

Holiday favorites around here are:

Jam filled butter cookies
Oreo Truffles
Chocolate cookies with Peanut Butter chips (recipe on the back of the chips bag)
Lemon Bars
Raspberry Oatmeal bars

Kourabiedes are little greek butter cookies that kind of resemble shortbread, but have almonds (or other nuts) added as well. I'll dig out my receipe box tonight (if I have time - it might have to wait until tomorrow) and post it. Spritz cookies are the ones made using the cookie press -it kind of looks like a caulking gun, if you have an older model.

Lets see...

Chocolate dipped oreos
Millionaire bars
Apple oatmeal raisin
Sugar
Gingerbread
Mexican wedding cookies
Bulls-eyes

there is more but i cant think of any others at the moment.

Peanut-Butter Blossoms
Rainbow cookies (people have been asking me about these all month already - its not Christmas yet people!!)
Spritz cookies
Linzer Tarts
Christmas shaped sugar cookies - some iced, some just with colored sugar
Gingerbread cookies of course!

More that I can't think of right now! I will have to look through my stuff and get back to you.

These!!!! They are so delicious. They are an almond based cookie, you dye the green & pink layers with food coloring, and there is a thin layer of jelly between each layer. I use raspberry, but some people do apricot & raspberry, and i'm sure some people do even different.
