Last year we went to DisneyWorld and the year previously we went to Disneyland. Our trip to DisneyWorld was a success, thanks for this forum and much planning, we went on almost every ride except for 3 during our stay and still had extra time to walk around and just enjoy. It was a wonderful experience! Disneyland previously was not. Lines were long, we waited, never used a fast pass, etc. So we're giving it another try with much planning. I have a question, is DL fast pass like WDW? I know we don't get a band (which I love), so we get a ticket? To be honest I'm not sure how fast pass work at DL, I'm also wondering if it comes with my ticket? Do you have any suggestions to help make this a great trip? I am aware nothing will be perfect, my expectations aren't that high but I do want o be able to go on rides. We have a "crowd" calendar here as well. Which really helps! :D

When are you planning on going to DL? Are you planning to stay on site or at a Good Neighbor hotel? What size is your group?

We have gone to DL a couple of times and never found it "crowded", but then again we went during the week in January and February.

Last time we went in July! This time we are going in February. For many it's odd but I have found that to be a good time. Summer is when it gets crazy so I use that time to go on a trip around here or go elsewhere.

We're staying at a nearby hotel. Nothing fancy. There's only 3 of us.

Oh okay! Let me go find that board. Is this the WDW board?

Don't worry about moving the post, a moderator should be by sometime and they will do it.

Now one thing to check before you go are the closings and rehabs out there. We have never done the Haunted Mansion because it was always closed from the holiday overlay.

If you are staying on Harbor drive, I thought the bus system was good and reasonable. You are dropped off right at the Plaza between the 2 parks.

There is a lot of information on this forum - luckily with that information in your back pocket no one should have a bad trip to Disneyland.

First check out Mary Jo's thread - there you will find links to many other threads including one specific to Fast Pass information: http://www.disboards.com/threads/dl...iews-hydroguys-tips-newbie-info-here.1072276/

February is not as busy a time as mid summer but less busy times also means reduced hours. This year with the 60th Celebration it sounds like there is plenty to do even during less busy times. Mind you, the idea of an 'off season' appears to be extinct in DLR - we visited in early March 2012 and honestly we have never seen it that slow since, except for a few days when it rained.

Happy planning and I hope you have a great trip.

.....well being that you have no emotional attachment to the train.... you will do great

......being that you have no emotional attachment to the ROA...... you will do great

and oh, they are closing the rivers of the world also, but hey don't worry, Disney is bringing in El Nino for all those folks who like water!!

Fast pass is completely different. No advance bookings. Your ticket.... usually a plastic credit card type ticket is inserted in the fp machine and it spits out a ticket. It will tell you above the machine when your return time is. If you have dinner plans and the time doesn't work for you, you can just exit. If you do take the fp...you will have a 1 hour window to use your fp or you will need to wait till the window expires before you can get another fp

research California weather and pack accordingly and rain gear must be heavy duty and not a last minute decision rain gear.

At this point, DLR is still using the "Legacy" FP system. There is no Magic Bands or FP+ at DLR, so you cannot "reserve" your FPs in advance, but for the most part, the FP system at DLR is similar to the FP system that WDW was using before they went to FP+. You'll insert your ticket into the FP machine to get the FP; they do post the current return time so you'll know if it works for you or not before getting the FP. You can also check the official Disneyland App, which will give you the current return time. Unlike WDW, there is no official grace period (either early or late), so plan on returning during the time window printed on the ticket.

Once you've obtained a FP, you can collect your next FP two hours later or when the FP window opens, whichever comes first. Let's say it's 9:00 am and you obtained a FP with a return time of 10:15 am to 11:15 am. You'll be able to get your next FP at 10:15 am (when the time window for the most recent FP opens). On the other hand, let's say it's 9:00 am and you obtain a FP with a return time of 2:15 pm to 3:15 pm. You'll be able to get your next FP at 11:00 am (two hours after you pulled your most recent FP).

Caveat #1: There are a handful of "disconnect" FPs. You can obtain these FPs and they do not limit/impact your ability to get another FP immediately. The only "disconnected" attraction FP is for Buzz Lightyear. WoC, Frozen at the Royal Theater (a show), and the A&E M&G (they may no longer be using this) are also "disconnected" FPs. In other words, you could go get a WoC FP and then immediately go get a RSR FP.

Caveat #2: The two parks are "disconnected" from each other. Meaning you can collect a FP in DL and then immediately hop over to DCA and collect a FP there. For example, if you are in DL and pull a FP for Space Mtn, you can immediately go over to DCA (assuming you have park hopper tickets) and get a FP for RSR.

Caveat #3: Once a park ticket has been used to enter a park, you can obtain FPs in either park. So let's say your party all enters DL in the morning. You can then have one person (aka "the runner") hop over to DCA to get FPs in that park. (It's worth noting, I've only ever done this with park hopper tickets, so I don't know if works if someone had a one-park-per-day ticket).

There aren't a huge number of attractions at DLR that use the FP system. Mostly they are the thrill rides and a few of the more popular non-thrill rides. Disneyland.com has a list of the attractions that currently use the FP system:
https://disneyland.disney.go.com/attractions/#/fastpass/

In terms of crowds, it's hard to say what things will be like in February. Traditionally, late-Jan through Feb is among the quieter times in the park, but as noted, crowds seem to be increasing each year and there really isn't any non-busy times anymore. Still, DLR considers February to be non-peak season, so the parks will be operating with shorter hours and reduced entertainment. This year, it appears that they'll be presenting fireworks nightly (which is usual because fireworks are normally only presented Fri to Sun during the non-peak periods). There are some events happening that might impact crowds; I've been tracking what I hear about in the 2016 Calendar of Events and School Breaks thread.

It's worth noting that the Rivers of America (Tom Sawyers Island, Mark Twin, Columbia, Canoes, and Fantasmic!) and the Train will be shutting down in a few days (Jan 10 is the last day) for a lengthy period of time (a year or more) as part of the prep work for Star Wars Land. The Big Thunder Ranch and Jamboree Area is also permanent closing (Big Thunder Railroad - the attraction - is not impacted). Over in DCA, the Aladdin stage show will be dark until the summer as they prep a new Frozen show. Other attractions (e.g., Autopia, Jungle Cruise, and Splash Mountain) may also be down while you are there. DLR doesn't always announce when refurbishments will start or end with much notice.

One other big difference from WDW is dining. DLR opens their dining reservations 60-days in advance (approximately), but dining reservations can usually be obtained with just a few days notice. I still recommend making dining reservations if you know you want eat at a specific restaurant or at a specific time, but it's not critical that you be on-line right when the system rolls (which happens somewhere between midnight and 8:00 am pacific time).

Fastpass at Disneyland is still the original kind, you bring your admission ticket to the attraction to get a return time. You get a little ticket printout of your return time. It has to be done day of and only some of the rides have it. Also, plan on higher crowds than you'd think. I went on a Tuesday the first week of February last year and I was shocked at the crowds. We still had fun but it was tougher getting around than I'd planned for.

Edited to add: Just saw that figment_jii gave you a complete rundown :)

I think you will find DL much easier to navigate than WDW. My family and I used a typical WDW strategy (Morning EMH, afternoon break, back at night) and found that we got quite a bit done at a relaxing pace. Although DL is smaller, rides are really packed in and the crowds seem to flow much better. The only ride we really had to plan for was RSR. We straight to RSR at EMH and were able to get on quickly. We then went straight to Toy Story Mania. We usually waited to get a fast pass for RSR so that we could ride it again at night. If Fantasmic is closed, I get the feeling that WOC will be in high demand, so get your fast passes for that early!

Fastpass at Disneyland is still the original kind
Exactly. Though if the op first went to WDW last year she doesn't know that.

Op get a guidebook or two. Go to the library and get the newest edition of the Unofficial Guide and the Birnbaums official guide. Read them.

We had been in July and it was great. We had been during the 50th anniversary though not in July and with almost no planning and it was great. We went this last July and it was horrible. As in, if I hadn't already gotten us bibs for the upcoming Star Wars runs I wouldn't have gone back. This July was rotten IMO.

So even though I'm very much not a newbie, I bought the current Unofficial Guide.

You are still new. Get the guides. :)

Caveat#4 You cannot hold 2 Fps for the same attraction, even if you are eligible to pull another FP. ex. Your two hours are up and you are still waiting for your Indiana Jones hour time. You cannot pull another FP for IJ, but you could get one for another FP attraction.

Hi there! Would you mind sharing why the second July trip was bad? We're thinking of going in July- always went off season before but can't now that the kids are in school. Thanks!

I know you're not asking me, but we went in July to DL 2 years ago. The crowd was horrendous! Not only that, but we barely got to go on any rides. We decided to give it another try this year.

Everyone is talking about the rain. ugh
We will be in CA for 1 week, the parks 3-4 days. Let's pray that it doesn't rain the week I'm going! :D

How to make a trip to DL a happy & successful one:
First and foremost, manage your expectations. DL is similar to WDW, but different in many ways. A few (ok, more than a few) things to keep in mind:

  1. Weather - if you're going THIS February, then yes - you should expect rain. It's an El Nino winter (pronounced "el neen-yo"), which means lots of rain. Check the weather forecast before you leave. A simple rain poncho & sandals might work well at WDW for rain, but you will be miserable with just that at DL if it's scheduled to rain a LOT during your stay. Bring waterproof rain boots & pants to keep your legs dry. Bring an extra pair of socks in case your feet get wet. Bring an umbrella AND a poncho.
  2. swimming - in my opinion, Feb weather in Anaheim is too cold to swim. But if you're a member of the polar bear club, go for it!
  3. Dining - there is no dining plan at DL. You don't need it. Dining vouchers don't save you any money anyway. A majority of DL visitors are locals who decide on a whim to go to DL after work that day. So the CS restaurants tend to have some pretty varied & decent options to choose from. In other words, it's not all hot dogs & hamburgers. You can have a really good meal at a CS place at DL. Go to www.allears.net for more info & prices.
  4. special dining packages - While normal DL dining reservations always open up 60 days beforehand, sometimes the special dining packages don't open up for reservations until the DL calendar has been updated on the Disneyland website. And that usually doesn't happen until 6 weeks beforehand. If you run into this, don't panic and don't worry. You can always call Disneyland Dining to check.
  5. How many people are in your party & what are their ages? Are some people night owls and others are early birds?
  6. Follow one of Hydroguy's rules and have each person in your group pick THE #1 attraction at DL that they want to go on during your trip. And make sure that on your first day there, each person gets to go on their #1 attraction. This allows you extra time the rest of your trip to go on it in case the ride breaks down. or in case your #1 thing was to see the Paint The Night parade and it was rained out...then you still have a couple more evenings to give it a try if the weather cooperates.
  7. At DL, it pays off to get there early. If you stay within walking distance and arrive at the park entrance 15-30 min before official park opening, then at least the first two hours that the park is open, ride wait times are minimal. On one visit, we went on 7 or 8 Fantasyland rides in an hour. Just walking on one after another. It was great! 3 hours later? Long lines and wait times.
  8. Disneyland now has a smart phone app. Download it before your trip. It has ride wait times. It also has entertainment info...locations, times, etc. Plus it has character meet & greet locations & times.
  9. A big difference from WDW - most character meet & greets have no FP. At the same time, there is a lot more "spontaneous" meet & greets at DL. This is where it pays off to be an early bird. Oftentimes, during the first couple of hours that DL is open, Captain Hook, Peter Pan, Alice, and the Mad Hatter are just wandering around Fantasyland. Sometimes you can even run into the Evil Queen from Snow White, too, later in the day...this is where the Disneyland app comes in handy. This is very helpful if you had a child who is dying to meet a particular character.
  10. The castle is a lot smaller. But there's a castle walk-through attraction that's pretty neat.
  11. Peter Pan has no FP.
  12. Animation Academy at DCA is really great and is often overlooked.
