Tropicana vs Park Vue

My DH and I ( and possible my parents) will be making a trip to DL December 9-13. :cool1: I have stayed at both the Tropicana and Park Vue, but it has been over 5 years since I have stayed at either. I am debating between the two. I remember loving the location of both, but cannot remember too much more! The Park Vue will save us about $90, but they charge the first night when we book.

So, I am looking for opinions:

1. Comfort- I don't sleep well when I have springs poking in my sides. Which one has more comfortable beds?
2. Cleanliness
3. Quietness- I know that neither will be soundproof, but which one is more quiet?
4. Space- Which one would be better for 4 adults?
5. Breakfast- We are not too concerned about the continental breakfast as we will probably bring our own cereal, oatmeal, and pastries. However, does the Park Vue provide milk for free at the breakfast? I know the Tropicana charges.

Another concern: When staying at the Park Vue in 2004, we came across a cockroach in our room. :scared1: I think this is the thing that is really keeping me away from the Park Vue. I read a review on Trip Advisor from this month that talked about a cockroach and a spider. Has this been a problem for any of you?

Thank you all for your opinions on these two. If you have any other opinions to add besides what I asked for, feel free! :thumbsup2 And don't worry about pool opinions. I don't think we will be swimming in December. ;)

Hmmm. We have stayed at the Park Vue 4 times, and have yet to see a roach. Not that I doubt others' sightings.....we have just been lucky, I guess. Ewwwww.

I can't comment on the Tropicanna, as we haven't stayed there. But as for the Park Vue:

1. Comfort - we have found the beds to be comfortable. We always bring our own pillows though.
2. Cleanliness - about the same as any other hotel we have stayed in. Not disgusting, but I don't use the ice bucket or never put my toothbrush down on the counter. Standard hotel rules.....for me anyway. :-)
3. Quietness - We always ask for a room in the back of the hotel away from Harbor, on the second floor. So far they have been able to accomadate that request. That way we don't have people stomping above us or road noise. And we sleep with the AC fan on. If you are trying to sleep when they are launching fireworks at DL, good luck. Sounds like they are launching them from the Park Vue roof.
4. Space - When you say 4 adults, do you mean in one room? We always have a room with 2 queen beds, and there is not much space. By the time you put the suitcases/flats of water/other bags on the floor, etc....the room is pretty full. The rooms we have stayed in would feel pretty cramped with 4 adults in them. I think their rooms vary in size, though.
5. Breakfast - Its decent and free. They have milk to pour in cereal.

Regarding swimming....the pool was heated in December when we have stayed there before. And from their website pictures it looks like they have a jacuzzi. Can't comment on that, as we haven't used it.

Its not a super nice place. the bathtubs are usually very slow to drain, so the water backs up to my ankles by the time I'm done with my shower. But the most important criteria for us are price, location and free breakfast.....and a place that doesn't gross us out. That is why we always stay at the Park Vue. I'll be curious to see if other posters have better things to say about the Tropicana. Their location is great too...

Happy planning and have a wonderful trip!!!

I can't comment on Tropicana because I've never stayed there but we stayed at the Park Vue Inn about a year ago.

It was just like the above poster mentioned. Beds were comfortable enough. I thought there was enough space in the regular rooms. Forget it in the bunk bed rooms. Those are tiny!

It was very quiet for us but we do always bring a small portable fan to block out noise when sleeping.

I loved the quick walk but for niceness the Hojo wins hands down.

I've been staying at Park Vue Inn 3-4 times a year for the last 8 years. I love the location and I think they have a great continental breakfast. They provide cold cereal, oatmeal and pastries if you don't want to bring your own. They also have waffles, fresh fruit, toast, muffins, yogurt, juice, coffee, tea, hot cocoa and yes, FREE MILK!

I've never seen a bug in my room in all the years I've been staying there. The only negative thing I can say about Park Vue is that I don't like that they charge you for the first night stay when you make your reservations. I used to book 2 or 3 trips ahead of time but now I don't for that reason.

We stayed (3 of us) at the Park Vue in December. It has been recently renovated and was nice for the price.

The front desk people are WONDERFUL and very helpful. You also get a discount coupon to use at the Coldstone Creamery that's attached to the hotel.

I would give it a try. The location can't be beat!

As far as the roaches go, I didn't see any when we were there, but I do know that roaches are a huge problem in So. Cal. I wouldn't be surprised to find one in most of the hotels. Freaked out? Yes. Surprised? No.

Hi There!

I have never stayed at the Park Vue but I have stayed at the Tropicana Inn several times and we loved it each time! I've never seen any bugs:scared1: or had problems with the staff. The staff is very nice and accommodating. I've found the beds to be decent and the rooms to be clean(of course I bring my Lysol and spray down the entire room anyways:rotfl:) The best thing about this hotel to me is the LOCATION! You are literally right across the street!

HTH! Have a great trip!

Thank you for all your opinions! So far I think we may be leaning more towards the Park Vue, but I am still looking for opinions. If just DH and I go, it will save us around $110, but if my parents go as well it will save us closer to $90. Since the Park Vue only has 2 queens available, we have considered booking a room soon and then if my parents want to go, we will just add them on.

Please keep the opinions coming!

kkmcan, Hojo sounds nice, but it is just a bit far of a walk at the end of a long day. Also, they don't have breakfast in the morning. It would be about the same price as Park Vue with the entertainment card discount, so I would rather take the one that is closer!

I, along with my husband and 2 boys stayed at the Park Vue in May for two nights. We stayed in the bunkbed room which was SMALL. It was clean enough but we had some trouble with a loud dripping sound late at night that management could not figure out where it was coming from. We were about to switch rooms when it miraculously stopped. It was fine but I probably wouldn't stay there again. Just too cheap feeling to me.

In this photo, the Park Vue is #4 and the Tropicana is #2. Park Vue is literally right by the crosswalk; Tropicana is a couple hotels down.
