Hi, just wondering which one to go with? I have children all under 6 years old and we take midday naps so we'd like to walk back to the hotel for a good nap. I wasn't sure which was close to the main entrance and a good swimming pool...
Thanks in advance for the help!

Hojos has the better pool complex and Tropicanna is about 5 mins walk whilst Hojo is 15min. HoJo has some great rates and may be a little cheaper...

Hi, thanks for the info. What was your experience at Tropicana Inn? Do you know if it's similar to Desert Inn?
Thanks.

We have stayed at the Tropicana the last 2 times and loved it...Great location, nice rooms and friendly staff. No complaints here. The pool area was very nice and the hot tub was great after a long day in the parks.

We stayed at the Tropicana in February of 2006. It was a wonderful stay and is our favorite offsite place to stay near Disneyland (have also stayed at the Hojo, BWPPI and Camelot). The room was spacious, we had two beds and there was room to leave our rollaway out at all times. It had a small frig and microwave. It was spotlessly clean, and you could tell it had been redone very recently. The bathroom was like new. The pool area was small, but very well maintained. They had plenty of chairs, a few tables and towels available as well. The hottub was huge. There were some nice landscaping touches (trees, bushes, flower pots) around the place which helped detract from the motel, parking lot feel. The staff was great and very helpful. And the location, being literally two minutes to the parks cannot be beat. I generally prefer to stay onsite, but when I stay offsite the Tropicana is my favorite. They also have a free, minimal but adequate continental breakfast which helps save money on food.

The Hojo is very nice as well. However the walk is longer, but still very doable. However, I must say, since I have stayed closer, I haven't been back to the Hojo! I realize that given how much you walk at Disneyland, that extra 5-7 minutes up to the Hojo don't seem like much, and really it isn't. But then again, being closer is nice too! The grounds at the Hojo are lovely, very well kept and lush. The pool itself is basic, however, they do have a kiddie pool (very nice with little kids) and a spray jet area. So this pool is great for toddlers. There is another pool, its also nice but doesn't have the spray jets. The main pool also has a nice hottub. The rooms at the Hojo are very spacious, some of them have skylights so if you need a dark room for naps or sleeping in, that might be a problem. We enjoyed the natural light. The staff is wonderful. There is a Mimi's right next door, great food, huge portions at good prices. They serve all three meals and you can do take out to your room. Some of the rooms at the Hojo are literally right next to the freeway, so be sure and ask for a non freeway side room. Paying for a theme park view (not a large upgrade fee) will save you worrying over that one. There is no free breakfast.

The Tropicana wins for location and having the free breakfast is nice. And their pool is nice, my older kids (10 and 12) loved that pool since it had a deep end. However, for smaller kids, the Hojo pool would be better. The location wouldn't, so if I stayed there with small kids, I would make sure I brought my own stroller. For me, I love the location factor more and our room at the Tropicana was in better shape and cleaner than the Hojo one. So while we had a great stay at the Hojo, having now stayed at the Tropicana, we probably will just stick with that. I also like having a free breakfast, it isn't fancy (far from it) but its nice to have.

You cannot go wrong with either, I think it just hinges on which means more, the pool or the location!

We stayed at the Tropicana last month. We loved it, the walk back to the hotel was very quick. Which made it nice because we like to go back for naps and a swim as well, and don't want to feel like we shouldn't because of a longer walk. The room was nice and clean, the staff was helpful and friendly.

The pool and hot tub were very nice, although I've heard Hojo's is better in that department.

We plan on going back to the Tropicana again next June. The location is a huge draw for us.

Another vote here for the Tropicana!!!! I would 100% stay at this hotel again. FANTASTIC LOCATION, only a 5 min walk. The rates are not terrible, and the rooms are nice and clean. I didnt even find the continental breakfast bad. Out of all the hotels that I have stayed at, I have to say that this was definately the most decent.

Sure Hojo gets some good reviews and has some good deals and rates, but with little children who maybe tired, staying a bit closer with a 5 minute walk insted of a 15 is ultimately better.

We stayed at HoJo and loved it. It's about 15 minutes from the front gate so that might be just a little far for a midday nap, as it would be half an hour plus however far you have to walk in the park to do a round trip.

But it's a lovely well-run hotel, the pool area is very good - decent sized, heated family pool with spa and kids wet play area right next to the main tower. No breakfast but a good shop on site and great restaurant across the street Mimi's. We'd definitely stay there again, but that extra distance for the midday nap may be just a little too far.

We enjoyed our stay there in 2004 and tried to book it again in 2006. We couldn't get a good deal in 2006 so went next door to the Carousel Inn which we found even better. Tropicanna won on the pool department but CI had bigger room, nicer breakfast, bigger fridge and microwave, and nicer staff.

We stayed at the Tropicana in May, hoping to get on the Tropicana bandwagon. The room was too small for three people (maybe a suite is an option?) especially if you plan on being in it for naps, etc. like we were. The breakfast was stale danishes. Fruit was fine. I am not a hotel snob but I would compare it to a step up from Super 8. It was clean and close and the pool was decent size but the breakfast and room size were downers for us.

We didn't like it enough to want to stay there again so next time we are off site we will try BWPPI and I have seen some good reviews for Carousel.

I think you probably just got stuck with some smaller than average room (which is a shame). Our standard, non suite room was plenty big enough for the four of us and we kept the rollaway set up the whole time and still had room to move around. My experience with hotels that I have stayed at mulitple times is that they all seem to have rooms in differing sizes.

I do agree with your "step up from a Super 8. However, I have to say, pretty much all the motels on Harbor are that way. They are all motels, older with little in the way of amenities. If it were not for the fact they are all across the street from Disneyland, they probably would have been leveled years ago. Instead, they are generally clean, refurbbed from time to time, but in the end not enough to really make them anything other than what they are, older motels! The exception is the Hojo, motel rooms, but the grounds which are quite lovely, sets that one apart. Good luck with your next offsite choice! If you book the BWPPI, I might suggest a mini suite, it was pretty spacious, far more so than the standard room I peeked into on my way to the pool (door was open, I was curious if the suite was worth the extra money, to me it was given the size of that other room). And the pool area at the BWPPI is a total joke, it has a capacity of something like 23 people.

That is good to know about the room size at the Tropicana. It was hard because our trip before that was at the DLH with park view and the room was huge.

We were going to stay at BWPPI next month but we got in on the AP rates and splurged for GC Concierge. Now I think we will be so spoiled we will never want to stay off site...........

WOW what floor did you stay on? We stayed on the 3rd floor of the Tropicana and our breakfasts were very decent. The muffins were a little stale but the danishes were so fresh that it was like they were just made. Maybe we lucked out but we found them extremely good. After we tried them we actually discussed reviews we heard and we were all in agreement cause we heard the breakfast danishes were a bit stale but were oddly surprised they werent.

We stayed on first floor with the vehicles two feet from your door. The breakfasts were so bad we gave up on them after the first day and did our own thing in the room. My parents were staying in the room next to us and they had the same complaints that we did so I figure I can't be too far off. Again, it was close and clean but I don't think it was cheap for $110 per night.
Our room was so small that the table and chairs were jammed between one of the beds and the window and you had to crawl over the bed to get to the chairs. There was no closet for the suitcases so we had to step over and move them to get to the bathroom.

Oh Lord, say no more! Staying at the DLH the first five or six times we went to DL spoiled us too. For example, our first offsite stay was the Hojo. I was extrememly disappointed, because I was spoiled and also the high reviews on Tripadivosr set me up for something a bit high on the expectations side! Once I looked back I realized there are just limits to what an older motel can offer.
The Tropicana was fine (I got in for around $65 a night offseason) and since I had stayed offsite a few times was better prepared. I just loved being so close and the staff were so nice and helpful it made me just really like the place. I have to say the staff at BWPPI were also wonderful, on the breakfast front, theirs was better than the Tropicana's but you couldn't take anything back to your room which peeved me and turned me off. In any case, I do think once you go onsite, it can be tough to go back! Enjoy the GCH concierge, I am jealous!

Yeah our room was plenty big (2nd floor), and the danishes were fresh (I mean it is a free breakfast, so you can't exactly expect eggs, bacon, and pancakes! LOL).

I love staying onsite, and I know if I try to compare our stays onsite with ANY of the motels offsite, were going to be greatly disappointed. We've done it before. Stayed at the DLH for one night and then transfered to a motel offsite. Ugh, not smart! LOL

But we really did like the Tropicana, it works for our offsite trips. I wouldn't mind trying the Carousel or even BWPPI (the only thing that stops us is the pool size and/or lack of hot tub). But even with those I have to have lower expectations, then when we stay onsite.

Thanks for the info! Does anyone know what the Breakfast is like at Carousel Inn? Anybit better than at Tropicana? Now I'm stuck deciding between Carousel Inn and Tropicana!

By the way, what is BWPPI?

Thanks again! :goodvibes

BWPPI: Best Western Park Place Inn

Its right next to the Tropicana, the first one at the crosswalk. There are some other Best Western's as well so you have to specify exactly which one you are talking about! Good luck with your choice, I can't comment specifically on the Carousel breakfast, I can't ever stay there because there's no hottub and dh likes his evening soak after a day in the parks! We really did love the Tropicana and probably won't venture anywhere else for offsite trips. Good luck and have a wonderful trip!

I liked the Carousel for breakfast, but the Tropicanna as a hotel. I would stay at either again. (like that helped any... sorry)

But if it came down to "food" I guess Carousel would win out. They did have a larger amount of food and I never "felt" bad about taking it back to my room.
SO I say Carousel.

Yup I've heard the Carousel is better when it comes to the breakfast. Shame they won't let you stay at the Tropicana and have breakfast over there. LOL They have it in a room with an awesome view of the parks too!

Like Amy when my husband found out there was NO hot tub, he was like "No way"! LOL He loves his soaks after a long day in the park!
