For all of you lucky dogs that are going on the Podcruise, are you loading up your Ipods with tropical music? I ask because I work at a winery on the weekends and we have a tropical event this weekend that needs music. I am putting together a couple of CDs because we can't handle another "Radio Margaritaville" fest which is how we usually handle things at the winery (and we're about ready to strangle the parrotthead -SORRY LOIS!). So far I have added some Harry Belafonte, Bob Marley, and some other odds and ends.

Can anyone think of perfect tropical music that is fun?

Thanks for your help!

I like any type of music with steel drums. When I hear that music it usually makes me think of the tropics and vacation. :yay:

What!!! :scared1: no Jimmy Buffett!!!!

Ok, I'm over it now. I too love anything with steel drums, puts you right on an island!!

Here's a link to a utube ultimate Caribbean mix (can say how good it is, I don't have sound on my work computer).:confused3

Have fun!

You can't go wrong with Bob Marley or Jimmy Buffett. Burning Spear is also good traditional Jamaican music. Calypso music is also a good bet but I can't think of any specific artists off the top of my head.

May I suggest some folks out of the mainstream that are quite good...

Hannahs Reef (Out of South Texas)
Jerry Diaz (Out of South Texas)
Lattitude (out of South Carolina)
Sunny Jim (An Island Hopper if there ever was one)
....and for something a bit different
Ray Fogg's early CD (Waves)... life on the great lakes!

Downloads will be cheap (or free) and the music is great!

Thanks everyone! Lois, I actually have a couple of Jimmy Buffett songs on there (Mexico and The Wino and I Know) because the owner of the winery LOVES Jimmy Buffett and I would surely be flogged if I left him out altogether. But Jimmy Buffett for the entire day would make us all drown ourselves in the lake. A couple of years ago for this same yearly event, we had a 10-song songlist of ONLY Jimmy Buffett and the 5th and 10th songs were the same ... Cheeseburger in Paradise. It was our theme and if I NEVER hear that song again, it will be too soon. :sad2:

Beadpirate, thanks for the not-so-mainstream ideas! I will check them out tonight :thumbsup2

Kenny Chesney- Be As You Are and Lucky Old Sun

Not real mainstream:
Eric Stone
Kelly McGuire
Micheal Beans
Quito Rhymer and the Edge (from Tortola)

There are a series of three albums called, Thongs in the Key of Life I, II and III. Really good tropical/beach type music.

If you need another suggestions, PM me. I live on this music.

Kenny Chesney - that's great! We are in "country" country so that will definitely work. Thanks!

Don't overlook 311! I know that they can be a little more up beat and they do have songs that aren't exactly "tropical" but the songs that do, have a very tropical island feel. I would suggest:

1: Amber
2: Champaign
3: Speak Easy
4: Life's Not a Race
5: Prisoner
6: I'll Be Here Awhile
7: Rub A Dub
8: Leaving babylon

Worth looking into I promise!

It's not culturally authentic, but the last time I was in the Bahamas, we heard "Hot, Hot, Hot" by Buster Poindexter EVERYWHERE. I think it was temporarily adopted by the government as an anthem or something..:scared1:

It seems to be the generic cruise anthem since the early 90's.

I bought some independent music from a musician at a local art fair. He played what sounded like an electric clarinet or something, and one of the songs, "Tropical Breeze", is one of my favorites. I love the entire CD, Planetary Paradigm. (Yeah, sounds hokey, but it's good.) His name is Dan McClerren, and has got a New Age kind of vibe. You can easily drift off to sleep listening to his music.

Maybe I should call it "spa music".

Anyway, I found his CD on Amazon here:

I have another one of his CDs, but I like this one better.

I expect to see Raul dancing on Deck9 to this as he serves us drinks!!!!

Stacy, I see that you are in the Finger Lakes. Have you seen Kapeye (David Capus) play? He does have music available thru iTunes.
