:earboy2: My DH swears he heard or read that every time a DCL ship blows the 'When You Wish Upon a Star' horn, it is violating some maritime law for being 'not regulation' and Disney corp. gets fined some amazing amount of money...but they do it anyway, because they're Disney - they can afford it.

Anybody know if there is any truth/documentation to this amusing tale?
Thanks!!

I dunno if its violating a law or not but its not used to signal to other boats so I don't know why it would cause them to be fined? I thought the horns were to signal to other boats or am I nuts?

Hey,

So here is the dish! They have the 'When You Wish Upon a Star' horn system for guest impact. In addition, they have the standard ships whistle (we call it horn) for safety/navigational needs. They are not fined when they use the (as they call it on board) 'Mickey Whistle' for effect.

Next time you are on board, go all the way forward by the basketball courts and look on the front of the white superstructure to see the navigational ships whistle. The 'Mickey Whistle' is located on the front of the forward funnel.

Why do you think Disney Cruises cost more than other cruise lines? ;)

I have actually heard them sound the navigational whistle to signal to a passing ship, sounds just like the whistles on every other ship. There is no requirement to sound the whistle when leaving port, as it is not done when departing at night, it is mostly used as part of the experience.

Who here doesn't appreciate a good horn war when you are leaving port on The Magic or The Wonder? I loved the commedian's comments about when the horn is blown and the people on the other ships just stop and stare or clap....said in a sing songy voice like nana nana boo boo Our horn's better than your horn! LOL!

No kidding. The Magic was one of 6 ships at St. Marteen on our cruise. The grand old lady, the Queen Elizabeth II was anchored, and as each of the ships left, they exchanged horn blasts with the QE2. The Magic was the 5th and last ship to pass by the QE2. We did the normal exchange of regular horns, and when the QE2 finished her horn response, they hit the special horns. A lot of heads turned on the QE2.

I doubt Disney is breaking any law. While it may not seem like it if you are at the front of the ship on deck 9 when they sound it, the When You Wish Upon a Star Horn isn't nearly as loud as the regular horn. We couldn't even hear that horn in our cabin on deck 7 aft, but we sure could hear the regular horn.
