Trips to the coast

Whilst planning our trip today, my family mentioned maybe taking a trip down the coast for a day while we are staying in Orlando.

We dont want to to spend too long driving or end up lost or anywhere dodgy!

Can anyone recommend any nice places to visit on the coast?

The nearest Beach is probably Cocoa Beach (about 50m east of Orlando) but I find this area a bit tacky. Its the rough Atlantic coast as well, so unless you want to surf, it may not be suitable for general swimming.

The Gulf Coast the west is MUCH nicer but a little further...about 80m. Its an easy trip and you can choose from some lovely locations like Clearwater, Treasure Island, St Petes or Anna Maria Island to the south (and over the spectacular Sunshine Skyway bridge). I would definately say go WEST rather than EAST for a nice day at the beach!!

I just had a look at a map and Clearwater looks like the place to go without having to be stuck in a car all day!!!!!

Any particular recommendations? We would like to go to a beach or somewhere quiet ish with a pier - H wants to do a bit of fishing and we all want to relax and have some lovely seafood!!!!

Why not go slightly ( 15 minutes ) north of Clearwater to Honeymoon Island or Caladesi Island ? Much less hectic, some great places to eat ( Kellys in Dunedin is FAB ) you can take a trip over to Caledesi Island which is beautiful and no cars ! On both Honeymoon and Caladesi Island you'll collect amazing sea-shells and virtually have the beaches to yourselves.

I agree with allie5. Cocoa Beach is rather tacky. We went to Clearwater Beach - much nicer. However, it did take us much longer to get there than we expected. Maybe there was more traffic than usual - as it was Easter.
